10 Views of Provence You Must Not Miss

Our favorite Frenchwoman, Mireille Guiliano, writes us from France and reveals the crème de la crème of Provencal sights.

Photo Essay

Provence and the South of France is the Francophile’s top destination after Paris. The light and the views are magical, especially between April and October. I’ve visited, stayed and lived in several parts of Provence and have some favorite views that live with me – past, present and, hopefully, future.

First, though, let’s be clear on what is Provence. It is not the Côte d’Azur, the Riviera – you know, Nice, Cannes, St. Tropez and all the dots nearby on the Côte and a bit inland. Provence is a touch west and north, anchored by such cities and villages as Avignon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, St. Rémy-de-Provence and more. The hills – the Lubéron, Les Alpilles, the Dentelles de Montmirail … The departments (counties) of Vaucluse (84), Bouches du Rhône (13). This is the country of Van Gogh, Cézanne, sunflowers, lavender and fruit trees.

These may be some of the most dazzling views within such a small area, but many small villages, and bien sûr, the major cities, will offer equally rewarding views, whether of a fountain, a row of houses, an unusual town square or some small streets that transport you to a different era. And, of course, if you are driving in the Provence countryside in July or August and spot a field of sunflowers, stop the car and start adding to this list.

Editor’s Note: Mireille Guiliano is the internationally bestselling author of French Women Don’t Get Fat. Her latest book isThe French Women Don’t Get Fat Cookbook. Born in France, she now divides her time between New York City, Paris and Provence. She can be reached at mireilleguiliano.comand frenchwomendontgetfat.com.

Thank you for the wonderful slideshow of views from the Provence!  Brought back memories from a trip my husband and I took so many years ago - and all the lovely sights and smells of that lovely place!  Ah, to be young, in love and have the leisure of time again…

The photo of those lavender fields brought me back to France in a heartbeat. Nothing - absolutely nothing - is as refreshing and transporting as the scent of those blooms on the hot summer breeze. I bought so much dried lavender in France - in the form of loose buds, in those beautiful little "bouteilles" bound with ribbon, as cologne and soap and sachets, and the scent always makes me think of walking slowly between the rows, lightly rubbing my palms over the blooms, and then lifting my hands to inhale the lingering fragrance. Thank you, Mireille, for reminding all of us of the loveliness of Provence!

The slideshow was amazing. Such a beautiful area of the world. My only frustration is that these incredible photographs had to be accompanied by commercial ads. (Lavender fields with someone shampooing their hair in the sidebar?)

For the most part I ignore the ads. I know its how sites like this stay afloat. And I love this site and wouldn’t want to lose it. But still…. what an insult to such beauty.

In 2003 my husband and I celebrated our 50th anniversary at a long planned occasion by our sons and their wives in Cap Ferrat.  All members (including grandchildren) attended.  We did all the eating and drinking and when those days were over my husband and I decided to go to Lyon and have dinner at Paul Bocuse Restaurant. We then decided to take  the riverboat down the Rhone from Lyon because I wanted to see many of the scenes of the impressionist artists and Avignon.  At Avignon we boarded a bus going to Nice.  Ever been on a bus with a zillion people with cameras?  I take photos of nothing.  I have learned to lock those beautiful and fragrant memories somewhere in my brain, along with the beautiful swans with their cygnets on the Rhone.  Seems to me that trying to get the perfect shot stops the "shooter" from enjoying the moment.  Just try it sometime. I started doing it when my last son finished high school.  He and his pal were walking along the ocean to get to school and I watched them round a bend and thought ‘I will never see that again’.  Same with the lavender fields (although I have added scents to those).  Enjoy the moment no matter if it’s Provence or a new grandchild.  Let the "shooters" have their photos and the non-shooters have the memories.  Selfish, you bet.
