Judith Martin contemplates ‘Catch-22,’ the novel and the phrase
The Modern Library is one of America’s most distinguished and important publishers. Founded in 1917, its original mandate was to provide American readers with inexpensive reprints of European modernist titles, along with the work of a few contemporary American writers. It was purchased in 1925 by Random House, and soon became one of the leading publishers of International and American classics. In the early 1990s the publisher appointed a board of prominent thinkers and writers to advise it; in July of 1998 the board released its list of the Best Novels of the 20th Century, which caused a great deal of controversy and debate. wowOwow is pleased to present its own Readers’ Poll, based on the Modern Library Board’s list, as part of the The Book Party.
