Coulter on Caroline Kennedy: 'Every Time She Opens Her Mouth It Gets Worse'

(and other gentle musings from the irritatingly leggy author of Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and Their Assault on America)
By Myrna Blyth
Amazon

Ann Coulter is at it again. Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America (Crown Forum), the newest book from the leggy, blonde, irritatingly slender liberal-basher hits bookstores this week and is already climbing Amazon’s bestseller list. And so the usual media Ann-a-rama has begun with Coulter launching the book on her pal Sean Hannity’s radio and TV shows. She’ll be on “Today” on Tuesday and will follow that with countless interviews. UPDATE: She was supposed to be on "Today" on Tuesday but was abruptly cancelled.   "Today" claims it was because of "breaking news." Coulter isn’t buying that.   The "Today" cancellation just adds to the controversy she is the master at creating.    Undoubtedly she will do countless other interviews. -Myrna

Coulter’s publicist says she never turns down an interview, even on radio talk shows that sound as if they emanate from someone’s garage. She knows her people are listening and buying thousands of copies of her books. She has already had six New York Times mega-bestsellers. Yes, there is a vast right-wing book-buying public who loves a girl who can call JFK “a venereal-disease-ridden sexual profligate and drug addict”; who never forget that “Sen. Ted Kennedy drove Mary Jo Kopechne off the Chappaquiddick Bridge”; who can recall that “President Clinton walked to and from church every Sunday carrying a ten-pound bible for the cameras – and then returned from church on Palm Sunday, 1996, to use a cigar as a sexual aid on Monica Lewinsky”; who can document, in footnote after footnote, that the Swift Boat Veterans were correct in their condemnation of the war record of “the mountebank Kerry.”

Judging by his Cabinet choices, Obama may not be as crazy as I thought he was. That may be worse for my career but better for the country.

I talked to Coulter about Guilty as she was about to embark on her media tour. The book is (no surprise) another in her attacks against liberals. Her thesis this time is that liberals always act like they are being victimized, primarily by the Republican Attack Machine. While in fact, they, with the help of a very biased media, tend to victimize all who disagree with them. She has written about media bias before. “I really didn’t intend to make the book so much about the media,” she told me, "but I just couldn’t help it because the media has so much power. They like to act as if they are powerless, but everything today is about the media. I just had to point out all their dirty little tricks. If you are Paul Revere you have to sound the alarm.”

Now, let’s get one thing straight. I’m a member of the media who is about as unbiased in my political leanings as, say, The New York Times. In general, I think Ann is often more right than wrong, no pun intended. Oh, sure, she goes over the top once in a while, but when she does she is no more unfair or unbalanced then, say, Frank Rich or Keith Olbermann. And she is a lot funnier. In fact, she is often laugh-out-loud funny. And as for being a judge of the true character of some of our political leaders, do remember it was Ann who appraised John Edwards correctly long before his supporters and, unfortunately, Elizabeth Edwards ever did.

Guilty is full of interesting set-pieces such as her report on how the Media Attack Machine turned, during primary season, on their longtime dearly beloved Bill Clinton. She writes, “Obama emerged from the clouds, and at long last, liberals were finished with the Clintons … It took a decade but journalists finally noticed that Clinton getting serviced by a White House intern whose name he couldn’t recall may not have been the equivalent of the Gettysburg Address.” She points out that journalists acted as if Clinton had changed, rather than as if they were no longer covering up for him. Todd Purdum in Vanity Fair said Clinton’s “cavernous narcissism” was related to his triple-bypass surgery. Coulter writes, “Yes, who doesn’t know someone who, after open-heart surgery, becomes an egomaniacal, pathologically lying horndog?”

I agree, this sort of thread really brings down the level of this site.

If WoW invites trash like Coulter….she can anticipate getting trashed. NBC and MSNBC has the sense to kick her a$$ off their station permanently.

merrell You can change the channel, or in other words you don’t have to read her. There are other threads. Did you see the one about “Helly” Suzman the anti-apartheid woman formerly of the So African parliament? Very interesting. She was something special. I think you would like her.

Thanks Merrell. I’ve noticed a lot of similar comments from others (even on different threads), and if no one minds, I am going to re-post something I wrote on another Coulter thread here. “Oh no, not her again…between her and Sarah Palin this site is going to go down the tubes. Divisiveness is getting us nowhere. We can all turn off the TV if we do not agree with the programming. I’m not sure what a refusal to comment on AC/SP stories would mean. Certainly if enough spurious positive claims about her appear and go unsupported, they should be answered. And just because we don’t agree with or like something doesn’t mean we should ignore it. Both AC and SP were in the news recently, so it does make sense to cover them, and I appreciate the coverage in a news sense, but whenever their names pop up, it just feels like a cheap attempt at…well, it just feels cheap. Not speaking up when you don’t agree with something is a dangerous practice. This is how society’s evils grow. Ignorance is not always bliss. But in the future I will not respond to coverage on this site of AC and SP, because I consider it gratuitious. I am already fairly sure I do not support either of them, but should I feel compelled to change my opinion, there are other sources I can find. I did learn a lot from these threads, some things enlightening, other things disheartening, especially as related to human nature. I love this website and will continue to post on other threads, including political ones. But these topics don’t need my input. I urge you to think about the issues I have raised and take similar action. If you feel you must speak up and defend your viewpoint, I applaud you and support your decision. But I think one sends a much greater message about what you think about AC/SP by not giving them the time of day. They may become famous because of supporters, but they become infamous, near superstars because of conflict, which of course only inflames their supporters. (I know posting this message at all may seem hypocritical but I have to make my initial point some way, don’t I?)

It’s getting worse and worse, I suggest you call your personal home-care aide and get the meds you need right away. I have never read such crazy rantings in my life, truly I think you should be admitted into the nearest insane asylum as soon as possible.

I’ve never seen a Coulter cow, I never hope to see one. But I can tell you, anyhow…” well, you know the rest. What a negative thread. Let’s move forward, shall we.

As if I care what Ann Coulter thinks. I see her as a very angry person who can only get attention by attempting to destroy people by her negativism. Sorry, she does nothing constructive to my way of thinking. Either Caroline Kennedy will do well or she will fall on her face. Time will tell and then the New Yorkers will have the freedom to choose if they want to elect her or send her home. Coulter, Limbaugh—they only exist on their own venom.

Thank you, Diana. I can always count on you to be level-headed. If there were no posts in here but from the 18 “newbies”, we’d never hear from Ms. Coulter again!

Diana, I purchased the CDs and ‘The Art of Power’ yesterday. Thank you again for your recommendations. I knew that Thich Nhat Hanh has had many books published and considered looking for the first, to follow chronologically. The only one the store had was ‘The Art of Power’. Some decisions are easier than others. Peace and grace

Beth, I hope you get as much out of them as I do. I also have the Tolle books, but sometimes after I listen to a portion of the CD, if it is something I need to remember for myself, I find it in the book and highlight it. As you may imagine, the book is quite marked up. Thich Nhat Hanh has been a favorite of mine for many years, and I think the first time I ever read him was Peace Is Every Step or Present Moment/Wonderful Moment. When I diligently practice my meditation, and work on staying in the Here and Now, every phase of living becomes, if not easier, more serene. Serene—now that’s not a word one hears or thinks about often, is it. Even the sound of the word transmits peacefulness. You don’t have to read Thich chronologically. Each book stands on its own.
