Growing Up at Grossinger's

Photo Essay

There was once a time when the Catskill Mountain region of New York State was home to luxurious resorts, fabulous cuisine and headline entertainment. And during those times, no resort was more famous or more magical than Grossinger’s.

Tania Grossinger literally grew up in her family’s famous hotel, and in her book, Growing Up at Grossinger’s, she shares with us a remarkable family album that includes pictures of some of the most famous names of the era at play.

wowOwow’s own Liz Smith has this to say about Ms. Grossinger’s engrossing book: “All the inside dope about that grand old Catskills institution, including stories about many stars who have twinkled there over the years. Charming.”

For the holidays, here’s a nostalgic peek inside …

There is also a delightful documentary about Grossinger’s that was shown on PBS some time ago. There have been so many of our comedians who got their start there. From what I recall it started out being a place that Jews could frequent since many other places like that had restrictions. It then became so popular and after many years expanded its clientele.

I took my parents to see Mal Z. and Freddie Roman when they appeared on Broadway many, many years ago. They had once went to Grossinger’s with another couple for a weekend over 40 years ago. I got to keep the green Grossinger’s folder. Many of my Jewish friends used to go up to the Catskills every summer. They really loved their time there. I will tell my friends about this book, but I will also enjoy this read too.

Missed this thread. I spent many good years, winter, spring, summer and fall at Grossingers. Not to mention The Concord too. I think I grew up in the Catskills, I still miss it.

I have to make a point to buy this book. Being from the Midwest, the East Coast, and especially New York areas, were always foreign to me. I remember the first time I heard about the Catskills was on an episode of the Dick Van Dyke Show. i say it all the time, East Coasters are so lucky.
