Almost September at the Book Party

Joni Evans
We are delighted to announce that Sara Nelson, the editor in chief of Publisher’s Weekly, the industry’s leading news source (covering every aspect of creating, producing, marketing and selling the written word in book, audio, video and electronic formats) joins us with a behind-the-scenes weekly peek of all that’s going on in the publishing industry. Take a look at her first post here.

We are delighted that Roxanne Coady, the much-loved owner of one of America’s greatest independent bookstores, R.J. Julia Booksellers in Madison, CT, has just posted her choices for great "beach reads." Click here to see the list.

And stay tuned for Judith Martin, our "classicist," who will give us her thoughts on Joe Heller’s Catch-22, the winner of August’s best classic poll (we will also post the first chapter). Judith will surprise us with her own choice for September.

And finally, we’re so excited to announce that Whoopi Goldberg will be casting her ballots for the best children’s books she’s come across.

My favorite children’s book is still The Stinky Cheese Man - my kids still laugh at those twisted fairy tales, even in their teens.

Hey Frank. The strangest thing. I googled “Edward Bear thump thumping down the stair” because I was unfamiliar and what did I find: Almost September at the Book Party | wowOwow Aug 19, 2008 … I’m afraid I’m stuck with Edward Bear thump thumping down the stair. By Frank Peterson on 08/21/2008 12:18 am … www.wowowow.com/books/ joni-evans-books-almost-september-book-party-82543 - 51k - How might that have happened? Is that kosher? I mean are all our posts somehow google-fied? I’m uncomfortable with that. I’ve got to think this posting business. Thought you’d want to know …

Oh Frank, might you have misunderstood me? If not, then ignore the rest of this. But if there’s a possibility, let me try again. I googled the phrase “Edward Bear thump thumping down the stair” so I could find the poem or book or whatever it is … But instead of a poem or a book, the first item on the Google search list is your post! Go. Do it yourself. You’ll see. What do you think of that?

Morning, Frank. Getting any rest? Have you been to the market for pears and apples? Your thoughts don’t have words every day They come a single time Like signal esoteric sips Of the communion Wine Which while you taste so native seems So easy so to be You cannot comprehend its price Nor its infrequency. –E.D.

Hines! So good to hear from you :-) You make me smile :-) I held a Jewel in my fingers— And went to sleep— The day was warm, and winds were proxy— I said “‘Twill keep”— I woke—and chid my honest fingers, The Gem was gone— And now, an Amethyst remembrance Is all I own— Guess who :-) I’ve immersed to an extent in Emily and have a new book coming titled: White Heat: the Friendshhip of Emily Dickinson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson by Brenda Wineapple. Somehow I think she’s love the name Wineapple :-)

Wineapple - how splendid! She would love it and I do. There’s a poster here who’s name makes me smile. Have you, too, seen “Honeychild”? I hope the White Heat is good. Will look for that. Oh, I did get the 2007 Jane Eyre movie on DVD - all four lovely hours!
