Sarah Palin and the Case of the Banned Books, by Sara Nelson

By Sara Nelson

Editor’s Note: Sara Nelson is the editor in chief of Publisher’s Weekly, the industry’s leading news source, covering every aspect of creating, producing, marketing and selling the written word in book, audio, video and electronic formats.

Given that we’re all “book people,” I assume that most of us got several copies of the list of books supposedly banned by Sarah Palin that circulated on the Internet last week. At last count, I received a dozen e-mails with the list attached, some of them from friends wanting to share the pain, and some suggesting I run the list in Publisher’s Weekly. I considered it, of course, until the list was declared a hoax — apparently, it names titles that have been banned at one time or another in American history and, most tellingly, a few books that hadn’t even been published when Palin was mayor.

What’s the truth of Sarah and the librarian? According to several reports, Palin had asked at least one librarian what the town’s “policy” was on book banning, which is a perfectly acceptable question for a new mayor to ask, though one that could have had a different agenda behind it than if, say, I had asked it. The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, reportedly allowed as how she didn’t believe in book banning. She was later fired, but after a public outcry the popular librarian was reinstated. That said, there is no real evidence that Palin tried to remove books from the library. Choosing titles at random from the bogus list, which included Brave New World, Catch-22 and the Harry Potter books, the only one I found not to be at the Wasilla public library was Heather Has Two Mommies, a book about lesbian parenting (duh) that no doubt is absent from many a smalltown stack. So while Palin stands for many things about which my feelings range from unease to stout disapproval, one thing I cannot accuse her of is being a book banner. Case closed.

Of all the kinds of phony lists that a Palin basher might concoct ... the one that won a hoaxter's heart was a roster of books banned.

But I couldn’t help being struck by something: Of all the kinds of phony lists that a Palin basher might concoct — number of abortion clinics shuttered, say, or the contents of her personal arsenal — the one that won a hoaxter’s heart was a roster of books banned. Many of the book people I know would be just as appalled at assaults on women’s reproductive rights or limp regulation of guns, yet there were no smear campaigns that I know of on these hot topics. And why is that?

Maybe, in a way, focusing on book banning is easy. While there is indeed a wide range of popular opinion about abortion and gun rights, there’s considerably less dispute about censorship. Like child abuse, few are for it. And surely part of the bogus e-mail campaign’s power was that it confirmed for us something we already believed: that Palin is an extremist in social matters.

But I also think that the prevalence and vehemence of the banned-books e-mail — it was picked up by the mainstream press and eventually debunked by USA Today, among others — suggests something else, something I find in a roundabout, slightly twisted way, pretty positive. To wit: Books matter. They matter in the national conversation. They matter enough for us to solicit and debate our potential leaders’ attitudes toward them.

In other words, they are lifeblood even for those for whom they’re not livelihood.

Pardon subject change but still on Palin….check this out. It tells a very different story on her popularity among Alaskan women and is very touching. http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/14/103042/902/965/597033

Just watched the video–––the last woman speaking brought tears to my eyes. To think all these women (and men) rallied around to take a stand in Palin’s own state is impressive as well as heartwarming. Thank you so much for this.

Baby killing? I guess neither you nor a daughter or any female relative have ever been raped and gotten pregnant? I also guess that you weren’t raped by your father or grandfather or uncle and gotten pregnant? Until you walk a mile in some else’s shoes, perhaps you should not be quite so judgemental. And that expression “killing babies” is offensive. Unless it can survive on it’s own, it is not a baby in my eyes—it is a fetus with the future potential of being a baby. Oh, and while I am off topic here, like Diane, how many abortion clinics have you visited and offered to adopt and raise the fetus they are aborting? Just asking …

Yes Rita, It’s baby killing. You can dance around the room all you want, but it doesn’t change the fact that that is exactly what it is. Rape is a horrible crime but common sense tells one that the two issues are independant of one another. A pregnancy is something that can happen as a result of a woman being raped, it is also the same thing that can happen as a result of a loving act between a man and a woman. Therefore a pregnancy is a pregnancy no matter what the act, (Rape is not a crime of sex but one of power control and anger) an unborn child doesn’t know those differences, they are innocent of the fact as to how they arrived, they just know they arrived. And anyone who so adamantly and ignorantly believes that unless it can survive on it’s own, is delusional at best. Try leaving it alone to grow and be nurished by it’s mother and VOILA, you get a baby, DUH! It’s amazing that common sense is flat out gone when a statement such as yours is made. No one, including God, promised us a life without trials and tribulations and unfortunatly, rape ect… can be something that happens to any one of us at any time yet the killing of an innocent child just because of rape is still no excuse to kill a child off. You say that the expression of “Killing babies” is offensive, maybe, it’s offensive because if you take pause long enough to see exactly what is being done to the unborn “FETUS” as you so callously describe it, you might reconsider. Especially when it is a proven fact that the unborn feel the pain of having their limbs ripped off of them as the doctor uses the currerator or when aborted with a saline solution and it’s screams are recorded as their delicate and fragile skin is being burned and peeled by the salt or maybe you prefer my description of the ole partial birth abortion, where the baby is completely ready to be born and coursing it’s way thru the birth canal and the head crowns and the lovely doctor ever so quickly passes the length of a pair of scissors swiftly through the babys nape area and drives it in to the brain….You know the ending. Yes, it has a “Future potiential” Try leaving it alone and in the womb, it will show you it’s potiential. you might reconsider your thought process. And on topic for the record, I have taken young woman into my home time and time again and have helped care for them and those little miracles who were left alone and allowed to grow uninterrupted and believe me be, they did just fine. BTW, One of the girls was a victim of rape and gave the baby up for adoption to a loving couple who were also aware of her circumstances. So yes, I can speak as one who counsels, provides, loves and nourishes both young women and their unborn and has put my money where my mouth is. What have you done, besides promote your belief that the unborn (regardless) of how they came to be, as nothing more than a bad piece of meat that needs discarding, should it become inconvient to you.

Elaine: Well said and “God bless you” for your loving kindness towards these young women in their time of need. What so many people don’t understand is that the majority of abortions are done on married women, who have decided that 2 children is enough and they don’t want another child, too inconvenient.

Thank you Diane for your kind words. You are right about the stats, it’s not enough to wear the designer duds, it’s now chic to design the inner workings of your womb. Has been the “Norm” in other countries for some time now, and guess who gets the boot….Female babies….Ha! now lets hear them shout for womens rights and when they do it’s called, talking out of both sides of the mouth. God bless you as well. :)

Good for you for your good deeds. But why should you be able to force your beliefs on others? It is not your place to decide whether or not a woman has an abortion. It is not your business.

Yeah there you go again you and your type, pop off and evade the question posed to you, WHAT have YOU done to HELP these young women ? Ahemmm, didn’t catch your answer and it was? Lets get you cleared up. GOD said murdering innocents is wrong. I didn’t write the law, I believe it. And guess what? You aren’t God and you don’t make the laws and neither do I or anyone else and if you don’t like what God has to say, I say take it up with him now or wait till he takes it up with you. Your choice! It is my buisness when it comes to helping my fellow mankind in not making a bad circumstance worse but better and every single solitary one of those girls knew when all was said and done they had done the right thing. Now they do not have to live with the horrible guilt of having used murder as a means to an end. And for your info, that decision was made possible for them because I stepped out of myself, to be of service to another human being. If left to the likes of you, we’d all be dead. You sound as one who lives for yourself and has no appeareance of what is real in life or what matters. Now let me make this crystal clear for you, DON”T post back to me unless you can answer my question, as I know your type (Evade the real issue at hand) and end talking loud, and sayin nothing of interest.

Elaine, It’s great that you’ve helped some young women in trouble. “Thou Shall Not Kill” extends to supporting the murderous elective wars of a sociopathic dimwit and the destruction of millions of peoples lives as a result. If I were Republicans I wouldn’t be so sanctimonious….nor would I want to meet God having participated, supported or voted for that. Also, you’re a smart woman. Maybe some day read “The Chalice and The Blade” with an open mind.
