Sarah Palin and the Case of the Banned Books, by Sara Nelson

By Sara Nelson

Editor’s Note: Sara Nelson is the editor in chief of Publisher’s Weekly, the industry’s leading news source, covering every aspect of creating, producing, marketing and selling the written word in book, audio, video and electronic formats.

Given that we’re all “book people,” I assume that most of us got several copies of the list of books supposedly banned by Sarah Palin that circulated on the Internet last week. At last count, I received a dozen e-mails with the list attached, some of them from friends wanting to share the pain, and some suggesting I run the list in Publisher’s Weekly. I considered it, of course, until the list was declared a hoax — apparently, it names titles that have been banned at one time or another in American history and, most tellingly, a few books that hadn’t even been published when Palin was mayor.

What’s the truth of Sarah and the librarian? According to several reports, Palin had asked at least one librarian what the town’s “policy” was on book banning, which is a perfectly acceptable question for a new mayor to ask, though one that could have had a different agenda behind it than if, say, I had asked it. The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, reportedly allowed as how she didn’t believe in book banning. She was later fired, but after a public outcry the popular librarian was reinstated. That said, there is no real evidence that Palin tried to remove books from the library. Choosing titles at random from the bogus list, which included Brave New World, Catch-22 and the Harry Potter books, the only one I found not to be at the Wasilla public library was Heather Has Two Mommies, a book about lesbian parenting (duh) that no doubt is absent from many a smalltown stack. So while Palin stands for many things about which my feelings range from unease to stout disapproval, one thing I cannot accuse her of is being a book banner. Case closed.

Of all the kinds of phony lists that a Palin basher might concoct ... the one that won a hoaxter's heart was a roster of books banned.

But I couldn’t help being struck by something: Of all the kinds of phony lists that a Palin basher might concoct — number of abortion clinics shuttered, say, or the contents of her personal arsenal — the one that won a hoaxter’s heart was a roster of books banned. Many of the book people I know would be just as appalled at assaults on women’s reproductive rights or limp regulation of guns, yet there were no smear campaigns that I know of on these hot topics. And why is that?

Maybe, in a way, focusing on book banning is easy. While there is indeed a wide range of popular opinion about abortion and gun rights, there’s considerably less dispute about censorship. Like child abuse, few are for it. And surely part of the bogus e-mail campaign’s power was that it confirmed for us something we already believed: that Palin is an extremist in social matters.

But I also think that the prevalence and vehemence of the banned-books e-mail — it was picked up by the mainstream press and eventually debunked by USA Today, among others — suggests something else, something I find in a roundabout, slightly twisted way, pretty positive. To wit: Books matter. They matter in the national conversation. They matter enough for us to solicit and debate our potential leaders’ attitudes toward them.

In other words, they are lifeblood even for those for whom they’re not livelihood.

Just surveyed your link, Jane. A lot of rules, I must say, and think perhaps it would scare some people away. Veering off topic sometimes has resulted in some lovely exchanges and some very interesting comments. We get feedback from Liz, Whoopi, Jane, Liz Peek,Liza and on occasion Joni. I, myself, would like a response from someone I have addressed (one of the founders) or a response to a comment I have sent directly to them, but all you get is an email telling you they “got it.” They must have a staff that is dealing with all this so that they, the founders, are not really directly involved in the day to day machinations. It would be helpful and also interesting to know exactly how this site is run. Anyway––I understand your points, but hope you don’t go too far away. I have enjoyed my exchanges with you. By the way, how was your trip–––see any bad bears in the Black Forest?

phyllis, those rules were simply an example. I get your point as well. Usually on boards like that there are personal threads where you can have lovely exchanges. I like that, too. I was hoping the “Change the world”-section would be such a place. The way things are handled here right now every thread seems to kind of dissolve into the same mush. You get the same result by just saying “Talk and tell us what is on your mind”. No bears this time of year, only lots of sunshine.

Kermie….those bears are huge bears, and mean to boot. I signed out and haven’t been back and people knew why I left. Same people doing the same things and saying the same things. But I smiled when I saw JaneCM…her avatar was a welcome sight….I felt back in the mainstream for just a minute….but no that’s not the case. Peace and Goodwill doll

One fact remains, this a diverse nation and it’s leader should reflect that diversity. I want a leader that listens to “all” the opinion and acts accordingly. That’s going to make some of you unhappy. McCain and Palin are dangerous because in far too many circumstances they acted in their own self interest and appear to me at least that they chose not to consider the needs of the entire community they were elected to represent. That’s not leadership for this country or the world.

What will we talk/argue about after November 2008 and January 2009? I’ll be so glad when this is over-the bickering-the hatemongering-the name calling for voicing our beliefs and choices, only to be shouted down. I know who I’m voting for and why, but you have that right, too. Don’t waste your breath on trying to make others see it your way because they wont. Where this was supposed to be a place of exchanging opinions, thoughts and ideas, it has become less than that and that’s disappointing and depressing.

I agree, JJGB: If a poster has a different opinion then theirs they pile on like a school of Phirana. Namely gc, deni, de Cornealia, peebody, peepee to name a few. They are a bunch of pompus, self-rightous know it-alls. If you don’t agree with their point of view, you get attacked, well for one I won’t be back for a long while. I think that will make all the BO lovers very happy. They call Palin a liar, but out come the barbs to defend BO, who has never lied….and never answered regarding his attachment to Ayers and no one on here wants an answer to that either. How about his racist pastor??…no answers for that either and you Phiranas don’t even care!!!!! GOOD BY.

Well Diane I will Reply….BO left that church…..this pastor should be turned in to the BIG CHURCH people and told he can never preach again but this is america and they wont do that because we have freedom of speech here!…..pastor is a Angry Black Man half the church has left him to my understanding I have a cousin in-law that attends this church and she has informed me of this…she herself has removed and replanted her self in another church! She explained to me that he really hadnt started talking like that until BO had been put on the ticket! She said she felt like he was trying to get his church to go BO…..not HC on th D Ticket….BO did not agree with what his minister was preaching! It was shameful and disgracfull that this minister was using his church to do politics.. The sad thing is my girlfriend called me last night to inform me that her minister was offering comments up during his cermone about Palin…WE are NOT to use the church when it comes to politics it clearly states this in the Bible..And it is very sad But Most Do Every 4 years….Yes he is An Angy Black man who is living in the past..we can only say we are sad the the south was like that sooooooooooooooooooo many years ago! He (the Pastor) needs to get over and move forward! Obviously he is not a Saved Christian he is a Papered Christian which means he is not filled with the HolyGhost….and Love…..no he went to school and got a piece of paper that say he is a minister! A HOLYGHOST Filled Minister Doesnt need a School Paper because God gives Him his cermones from the Scriptures ..the Bible says we must forgive one another or we can not be forgiven He as a minister should know this, He would be preaching on this IF he was a true bible believeing Christian! He will answer to God for this and believe me it will be sooner then later!. has Far as BO he and his family left the church and yes they went to this church for a long period of time but sometimes We MUST wait upon the LORD to tell us when it is time to uproot ourselves and move FORWARD! I myself would love to go to this church to hear this man preach only to see if he is now SLamming BO in his cermones my bet HE IS!

Diane, I find it very interesting that you call me out. I never called Palin a liar, I did not talk about Obama on this story. I do not think that Elaine found me to be terribly divisive or reactionary or rude even though we do not totally agree on everything and we had a reasonable exchange between two women who looked at a controversial issue different from each other but with respect to the others opinion . I try to use sound judgment when I post. I posted to you that Cuba,China were not socialist countries but communist and I did not believe that you could lay the worlds problems at the feet of socialists, I also said we need more supreme court justices like Sandra Day O’Conner and less like Clarence Thomas etc. I did not use provocative or divisive language. i know I have strong opinions like many women on this site. I questioned whether ammunition magazines were okay while others were not at the Wasilla Library. I am not a big fan of guns or hunting would rather have a pedicure. Sorry if I offended you but other then telling you to chew on a bowl of moose stew, I do not believe anything I wrote was highly inflammatory especially considering how you started this whole thing with a huge bang.

My grandmother had a name for what you are trying to do by “talking” to Lipstick Gala…..She, my granny, would have said that this is like “boxing with a four year old”……Don’t do it…..You are too smart, engaged, tolerant and gifted to get sucked into that….. Today, for the umpteenth time, it was reported that some think tank/institute/earmark program “sez” that conservative/liberal mindset is GENETIC……Google that…..I choose not to disbelieve it……Which is some sort of vague waffling on my part about whether or not something is true….and how do we know.?…..don’t care how many links you send out…….. If she would just read the dictionary about those words…not to mention what the Acts of the Apostles had to say about how to how to treat the least among us….. Brazil is burning down the planet in the interest of man “having dominion over”……that’s the, you know, organized church…..so that we can all have burgers…Seems to me that the fundamentalists want to have Jesus on their side but they can’t get past the Old Testament version of the world……Look at your brother’s wife wrong and die…..etc……but just don’t bother to give one of your houses over to fifteen people who could live there…time share…..Sorry…this is turning into “liberal” rant…… Sorry……the Eve Ensler chronicles here and on C-span Book TV might help us get through this……. Sorry….sorry…I just find that “militant ignorance” might just be the definition of evil…I read that somewhere years ago……. If I had a lobbyist on this site, it would be for having Eve Ensler as a regular contributor……Can I get a witness?
