Sarah Palin and the Case of the Banned Books, by Sara Nelson

By Sara Nelson

Editor’s Note: Sara Nelson is the editor in chief of Publisher’s Weekly, the industry’s leading news source, covering every aspect of creating, producing, marketing and selling the written word in book, audio, video and electronic formats.

Given that we’re all “book people,” I assume that most of us got several copies of the list of books supposedly banned by Sarah Palin that circulated on the Internet last week. At last count, I received a dozen e-mails with the list attached, some of them from friends wanting to share the pain, and some suggesting I run the list in Publisher’s Weekly. I considered it, of course, until the list was declared a hoax — apparently, it names titles that have been banned at one time or another in American history and, most tellingly, a few books that hadn’t even been published when Palin was mayor.

What’s the truth of Sarah and the librarian? According to several reports, Palin had asked at least one librarian what the town’s “policy” was on book banning, which is a perfectly acceptable question for a new mayor to ask, though one that could have had a different agenda behind it than if, say, I had asked it. The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, reportedly allowed as how she didn’t believe in book banning. She was later fired, but after a public outcry the popular librarian was reinstated. That said, there is no real evidence that Palin tried to remove books from the library. Choosing titles at random from the bogus list, which included Brave New World, Catch-22 and the Harry Potter books, the only one I found not to be at the Wasilla public library was Heather Has Two Mommies, a book about lesbian parenting (duh) that no doubt is absent from many a smalltown stack. So while Palin stands for many things about which my feelings range from unease to stout disapproval, one thing I cannot accuse her of is being a book banner. Case closed.

Of all the kinds of phony lists that a Palin basher might concoct ... the one that won a hoaxter's heart was a roster of books banned.

But I couldn’t help being struck by something: Of all the kinds of phony lists that a Palin basher might concoct — number of abortion clinics shuttered, say, or the contents of her personal arsenal — the one that won a hoaxter’s heart was a roster of books banned. Many of the book people I know would be just as appalled at assaults on women’s reproductive rights or limp regulation of guns, yet there were no smear campaigns that I know of on these hot topics. And why is that?

Maybe, in a way, focusing on book banning is easy. While there is indeed a wide range of popular opinion about abortion and gun rights, there’s considerably less dispute about censorship. Like child abuse, few are for it. And surely part of the bogus e-mail campaign’s power was that it confirmed for us something we already believed: that Palin is an extremist in social matters.

But I also think that the prevalence and vehemence of the banned-books e-mail — it was picked up by the mainstream press and eventually debunked by USA Today, among others — suggests something else, something I find in a roundabout, slightly twisted way, pretty positive. To wit: Books matter. They matter in the national conversation. They matter enough for us to solicit and debate our potential leaders’ attitudes toward them.

In other words, they are lifeblood even for those for whom they’re not livelihood.

Peabody: THERE ISN’T A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOCIALIST AND LIBERAL!

Actually, there is a great deal of difference between socialist and liberal, No. 1, and No. 2, both are very very good things to be. They are inclusive, life-affirming, and hopeful, forward-thinking positions. Neo-con is based in control, fear, clinging to outdated information and modes of thinking, and is strongly linked to fascism, which has caused much of the serious damage to humanity in our history.

Oh really, peabody? Actually you describe conservatives when you write life-affirming (we are pro-life), hopeful (we believe in God who gives us hope) forward-thinking (we believe in everyone working for a strong economy) and not looking for gov. hand outs and big gov control. Conservatives are not fascists, and excuse YOU, but socialist have caused the most damage to humanity in our history. ie: Soviet Union, cuba, , china just to name a few.

See, that’s the problem. You turn the truth on its head and then blame everyone else. But who has deregulated the banking industry, and put the wolves in charge of the insurance industry? Who was it that allowed the mortgage industry to play fast and loose? The liberals? No, we weren’t in power. Was it the Socialists? No, not in the US. Not in power. Who was it that started this illegal war in Iraq that cost us trillions of dollars we had to borrow, which has destabilized the economy of the entire globe? Socialists? Oh, no, actually, not in power. Was it the liberals? No, no, we opposed it consistently. But that’s okay, because your strong economy is working just so well.

Oh, darn, you know, I don’t want anyone to feel left out, like Ken Lay and Enron, Mr. Bush’s buddies. And of course there’s WorldCom, another “strong business” that has added so much value to the United States. Right. It’s the socialists and liberals. Uh-huh. I have a bridge to nowhere I’d be glad to sell you. The Democrats, on the other hand, are the bridge to the future.

HoBo Economy Thanks Bush-McSame
The government just bailed out….ie socialized…AIG et al…those who abused and reamed the system…and are now being rewarded for it. The same people who would never go for ‘socialized” medicine for poor people, are just fine and dandy with socializing an insurance company—-ie rewarding it for crooked management, rewarding it’s honchos….that screwed the millions that will be hurt in this…as they were in Silverado, Enron, etc….that’s what Republicans do. As Rousseau said, the money powers always trick the masses into enslavement. We are paying for THEIR war, bailing out THEIR scam jobs Enron to AIG. We the taxpayers are paying for all of it….the only people who profit from it are the rich. We aren’t building our infrastructure, we aren’t creating new jobs, we aren’t improving our schools, we aren’t putting money into new energy R&D…its all going to Bush Inc friends….gas/oil/arms/financial scams. Who got rid of regulation on derivatives…useless pieces of paper that are just best, as Warren Buffett said, economic WMD. That was Phil Gramm,. And as a result unregulated derivatives caused this mess (along with all the war spending and borrowing) and went form $9T in value in 2000 when our GDP was $14T….to $700T today when our world GDP is $50T. That should scare the hell out of anyone with a brain. $700T in unregulated derivatives largely in the hands of amoral predators when our GDP is $14T…..and a Manuchurian candidate in Palin.

Your whole first paragraph, Suzanne. Those thoughts lying heavy on me all day. Such utter complete injustice.

According to OpenSecrets.com: “…McCain warned of the coming mortgage crisis as he pressed in 2005 for regulatory reform of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. “For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – known as government-sponsored entities or GSEs – and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market,” McCain said on the floor of the Senate in 2005, speaking in favor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005. “McCain pointed out Fannie Mae’s regulator had stated the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal. “The bill passed the House but was never brought up for a vote in the Senate, largely because of Democratic opposition to change in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regulatory structure that remained in place until the Treasury takeover two weeks ago. “As evidenced by the failure to pass the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, the Democrats in Congress have repeatedly fought back Republican Party efforts to reform the two mortgage banking giants. “Instead, Democrats in Congress have sought to preserve the quasi-governmental status of the mortgage giants, seeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as places to locate former top Democratic Party operatives, where they have earned millions in compensation, despite a continuing series of financial scandals. Enron-like accounting manipulation, for example, boosted earnings to a level at which massive executive bonuses could be paid. …” The Democrats are knee deep in this unraveling mess.

diana, As a christian I just have to ask if you have ever taken a college history class because you seem to be very misinformed. Socialists have caused the most damage to humanity in our history. You perhaps might do some research on the crusades, the inquistion, the salem witch hunts, the Nazi’s, what’s happening in Darfur or what happened in the Congo. I cannot believe that you could consciously believe that Jesus considers Socialism more damaging then the many misguided actions of man. By the way the countries you mentioned above are not socialist but communist. Sweden, France, Germany, Finland, Norway those are more accurate descriptions of Socialism. I may be wrong but I believe our neighbors to the north in Canada also have a more socialist form of government. Considering big government hand outs and big government control I believe your guy George Bush has had the biggest government in American history and that does not even count the bail outs that have happened this week.

Please, stop calling yourselves ‘pro-life’ … people who are pro-guns, pro-war, pro-death penalty, etc. are most certainly not pro-life

ulla: Have you lost your mind 0r are you just a moron. Where did I write that I was Pro-guns, pro-death penalty or pro-war???????????? I am pro-life and you are pro-choice, the difference is you are not pro-choice, but pro abortion. Would you counsel a young girl and give her the option to not have an abortion?? I THINK NOT!! So therefore, you are not pro-choice, but pro abortion

Diane, It’s strange isn’t it that Republicans “aka conservatives although I never know what they are supposedly conserving” passed the laws (Phil Gramm) that got us into this mess of an economy. And now that they’ve gamed the system and stolen all they can want the government to step in and fix it. Bush just socialized AIG. Taxpayers will support that along with his phony war…and all to benefit the very rich….that’s socialized. There’s quite a bit of dif between liberals and socialists unless you are part of the Rush ditto head crowd and just believe everything he spews. And whatever there. Def liberal: ample, benevolent, bounteous, charitable, flexible, free, hospitable, knowledgeable, philanthropic, progressive, tolerant. Def socialist: The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved. No liberal I know of advocates socialism….although it certaintly isn’t the big evil of corporate fascism which is what we have now.

Rye You do just what Bush and the boys do. You spew hatred and try to divide people with it. Liberals and Conservatives alike do not want the huge, bloated ineffective Government, that Bush and the Republicans that voted with him (think McCain) have buried us under. Both Liberals and Conservatives want fiscal responsibility and end to war for corporate profit. We want decent affordable health care. We want an end to dependence on oil. We want clean energy, air and water. We disapprove of torture and value our privacy. Our Government’s business is to use the law to protect us all, not manipulate it for special interests. We pay the bills. The Government’s job is to work for us. We believe this. Liberals and conservatives, we want these things. Bush, McCain and the good old boys are not conservatives. They are something completely different. Obama is right, there is only one America and she is trouble. Stand on the sidelines screaming if you want. The rest of us will make our way through it together. And we will become stronger than we ever were, Liberals and Conservatives, together.

…..stronger than we ever were, Liberals and Conservatives, together.” Amen Deni, and thank you for speaking for me, as you so often do. So many of us are keeping the faith, doing what we can, and believing that at the end of the day we are all Americans, an identity greater, and far more important than our differences.

Countrywoman! chicken whisperer! The perfect sight to greet me this morning. I am watching the Ryder Cup. No Tiger this year, so that breaks my heart. Who designs the dreary clothes our team wears every Ryder Cup? That’s the real reason we have such a rough time winning…no power in the threads, no style to strut, just terminally boring stripey stuff in varying shades of tan and muddy blue. The Europeans always look fabulous. Although I must say the Europeans wore these duds yesterday that were the worst ever. We looked much sharper and of course, won the day. Today though, again it hurts my eyes to look at these blah things we are wearing. ok rant over. I do this every Ryder Cup. Good morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
