In Las Cruces, New Mexico, we are going thru a racist and sexist crisis at present…Two junior faculty members, John Morares and his wife Yelena Bird (both members of ethic minority groups) have been told they aren’t a good fit for our University shortly after John Morares complained about associate Dean of Health, Larry K. Olsen, and Social Sciences, sending Morares emails with pornographic images in them. Yelena Bird has been told she is too educated to be considered black; also she doesn’t “sound black” when she talks. The President of the University, Mike Martin, called the 500 person protest/petition “more like a sewing circle…..

I just moved from Las Cruces and worked for NMSU — if you are Hispanic, you are not part of a minority group there.

Z-I just moved from Las Cruces myself. I knew many people who work at the University. I don’t understand your comment. Could you explain please?

As much as I have been impressed with Governor Richardson’s ablites to resolve international conflicts, and move people into agreeable discussions, I have been shocked at the educational level in New Mexico, and have heard about the problems at UMN. I have not checked the Chronicle of Higher Education, but that situation has gone on too long to escape the Chronicle’s attention, and the Governor’s office. Interesting how the candidates’ home-turfs eventually reveal their actual values, abilities, and intentions. Anyone know more on this? I’m checking the Chronicle, but again, where is the AG in this shocking mess?

As an avid reader of The Chronicle of Higher Education I would strongly advise you to contact our friends at www.chronicle.com. Get your facts lined up and submit. This is one of those stories I think they may bite. Also do not forget our “wonderful” presidential candidates should have an interest in this story as well. Let’s see who jumps to the rescue first. Keep us updated.

Don’t worry about your typing. I get it. Some prople simply rather just type without worrying about lower or upper case letters. It’s about the content.

There is already a website for women to network to change the world. It can be found at www.builtonawoman.com. My suggestion for your ‘change the world’ is to design it different than mine. The web is a big place. With two unique approaches, we can accomplish twice the good. Good Luck to you.

The more the merrier Shellee. Different sites reach different demographics. Nothing wrong with spreading the do-gooding around. Your site may be dedicated to a worthy agenda. But precisely because wowOwow offers so many other opportunities to discuss things from culture to politics to women’s issues means it will reach an entirely different audience. I personally like how they have incorporated the Change The World segment into their venue. And the fact that they have has brought me to look at your wonderful site too. What I’m saying is, one business should not dictate another’s mission feeling like they have the corner on the market.

My site is new and I typed the wrong url (sorry). Actually it’s found at www.built-on-a-woman.com. I forgot the hyphens.

Two things, Shellee: 1. The Web is neither case nor punctuation sensitive with regard to typing in URLs (Website addresses, for the layperson), and so your link in the comment just above is perfectly functional. 2. Because the link above is functional, I was able to click through to your site. And, now that I see it, I agree, the site for women to change the world is ALREADY established at www.built-on-a-woman.com. What a wonderful site! www.wowOwow.com is also a fabulous destination. There’s a lot to love and support here, too. But I like the idea of furthering the distinctions between the two sites, so we can focus our efforts to their best effect rather than spreading them across the virtual world in a diluted state. Rock on.

Can we talk about child welfare and the abysmal state of children taken into foster care? Today’s foster care system is a direct conduit to prison for far too many children. This country needs to talk about child welfare in this country.
