Whoopi: 'I Don't Think I Was Ever Mean'

© AP

LIZ: Now look, is it true that you’re antisocial?

WHOOPI: Yes.

LIZ: I hear you like to stay in bed with your hat on and eat and drink and watch TV and movies. And you hate to go out.

WHOOPI: When I’m on the bus — you know I don’t fly — so when I’m on my bus, that’s me. I’m in the bed with my movies and my books, and that’s how I travel across the country.

LIZ: Also, we understand, Whoopi, that you are a very rich woman. And you know our Mary Wells Lawrence has written a posting for us, How to Become a Millionaire. So, we wondered if you have any ideas about how to do that.

WHOOPI: You know what? I say get the scratch-offs and hope for the best. I like my lottery tickets. One of the things I’ve never been good at was making dough.

LIZ: Really? Oh, but you work so hard. I guess you’ve just earned it. You’ve made more movies than almost anybody. I counted them. There were just hundreds of them!

WHOOPI: Yeah. But I don’t own any of them. You know what I mean?

LIZ: So you don’t feel you’ve made gobs of money from acting?

WHOOPI: No. For other people I have, yes. I put many people’s children through college.

LIZ: You create controversy everywhere you go. I don’t think you mean to. I think this just happens. Is that because you’re a true contrarian and a revolutionary at heart?

WHOOPI: I don’t know if I’m a true contrarian, but I just have a lot of questions and sometimes I’ve discovered that asking questions is not what people want you to do. They want you to just …

LIZ: Go along.

WHOOPI: Yes, and I’m not good at it because I find that if you just go along, it’s easy for people to leave you out there hanging. See, because everybody talks a good game until the shit hits the fan. And when the shit hits the fan, everybody disappears.

LIZ: Right. Well I remember that you’ve been misunderstood in many instances. I mean, the remarks about George W. Bush were taken out of context and then when you first came on The View, I thought there was a lot of mishigosh. And so, chiefly, what do people misunderstand about you?

WHOOPI: I think, more than anything, that my intentions are never to aggravate anybody, but just to understand and to say what I see. Mort Sahl was one of my heroes. And Mort always said what he saw. He reported on what he saw. His humor was about us as human beings. And so, in my crazy way, I thought I could do the same thing.

LIZ: Well, you know, I think it’s true. I don’t think you’re honestly confrontational.

WHOOPI: No, I’m not.

LIZ: You’re extremely civilized. If everybody in the world was as polite and nice as you are, it would be great. But I think you just say what you think and people are so full of bullshit that they don’t know what they’re getting.

WHOOPI: Well, it’s the funniest thing, you know. Since I took this job on The View, people say, “Well, you’re so nice.” And I said to myself, “Well, I was never …” I don’t think I was ever mean. I’ve had my moments with people who aggravated me. You know, where I’ve … I might have, like anybody else, gotten pissed off about something. But surely not … not evil. And I’m a comic. And so my job is to make it funny.

By the way, I did so love you on that Lawn Order where you played the foster mother. Such a range, such a range! Sing on!

I read this and I lament that I didn’t say hi to you Whoopi when I had the chance in Paris. I truly admire you and I was hired to photograph the opening of the Planet Hollywood on the Champs Elysee and I so wanted to talk with you but I couldn’t, our eyes met but I just froze. Privacy, “let the artist have her space”, etc., etc. Clear and simple - I think you are special and we are lucky to have you. Thank you.

Hi Whoopi. You probably won’t remember this, but back in the 80’s, I wrote you a fan letter from Montreal, where I was attempting to become a stand up comedian. I was teaching at the time and moonlighting at comedy clubs. That moonlighting morphed into motivational speaking across Canada. After a long day teaching grade nine, I came home and found a large brown envelope in my mail box. Inside was a photo of you, with a handwritten note across the bottom of it, telling me to start my own comedy club. Whoopi, you made my day. I was floored that you took time from your busy life to reply to my letter! I laminated your photo and it hangs in my office as a reminder there is no finish line. I’m 64 now, retired and still living in Montreal. You are still and always, my favorite comic. Thank you, Whoopi.

I love Whoopi’s intelligence and directness. She reminds me of most of the women in my family. She has elevated the view and is firm and fair in her comments. She and Barbara Walters are smart. I even find Joy better/more palatable since Whoopi’s been on. The other two hosts are air brains and limited in their thinking. I, too, think Whoopi, has shown an incredible range in her acting and I hope you continue to act. I’m enjoying this site. Candelaria

Liz, give it up! Please. Whoopi, you’ve made the view more than tolerable now. The incipid remarks still eek out, (as the one about Obama being “sexy”), but 2 of you there are honest, and appear at least to be self-actualizing people. Its like going to a medical center in Texas from one in Texas! Even the doctors speak openly in NJ!!!! Life is grand. Keep it up, please, if you want to. ;-)

Hooray, Whoopi, for your continuing candor! I attended one of your performances at a coffee house in San Diego three decades ago and was impressed then by your talent and straighforwardness. Have been a fan ever since. You are a breath of fresh air on The View; it’s worth watching now. Honestly, one of the reasons I checked out this website was because of your participation. (No disrespect intended to the other ladies). In these curious, perilous times we need all the civil discussion, humor, and smart women’s input we can get, so thanks to you and Liz for sharing your conversation.

ditto, Mo, it was charlie rose who got me here but I stayed for ms whoopi and ms lily. by the way, i was also hoping for more of ms noonan’s participation. not that she’s indispensable, but I thought it was a good decision to include her perspective and political cachet on the masthead.

Whoopi you are by far the coolest person I’ve never met. I watch the view everyday without fail, I have always watched it but more so since you came on board. I just love the way you are able to hear all sides to everyones comments and still be able to get your point across…and keep people from going too far off course. You are an inspiration and teacher indirectly to those of us who could stand to learn a thing or two about listening. For myself I am managing more to listen to what people are saying instead of what I “thought” I heard….thank you for that life’s lesson. On yesterdays show with Barack Obama I nearly fell out of my chair with laughter when Barbara said that he was “sexy” not because she said it, but because of the look on your face…..priceless! And Joy’s comment about Lincoln was hysterical….all of you ladies keep me very much entertained and informed…and without you it just would’nt be the same. Thanks for being you!

How Stupid is it for me to say: I love “Jumping Jack Flash”! I watch that movie every time I get the chance! I can quote lines from it. Stupid, good fun! and Everyone Must agree, as you’ve been involved in over 100 movies! Comedies are my guilty pleasure!

Stupid”? Lissen, why self-talk like that? I can think of a dozen adjectives for being obsessed with a fun thing that makes you happy. No, let me think, maybe two dozen. When a new friend was out of town at the beginning of our relationship in the 70s, I was so out of sync that I actually went to see the movie Madame Rosa every night for a month. It stabilized me to have that sanity with me every day. I loved it. Love it still. Great movie. Please don’t put yourself down, Shelly! The world will do that for you, no need to help ‘em.

Whoopi I want to start by saying you have been my IDOL for many years I truly adore you. I have seen ALL your movies, watch the View everyday and try to listen the best I can to Wakin up With Whoopi. I don’t get the station very well upstate. You are one of the most down to earth celebrities I have ever listened to. You say it like it is. I am that way also and alot of people misunderstand that as confrontational or controversial…..IT IS NOT….it is speaking your mind honestly….I emailed the View for months before you came on imploring Barbara to select you as a co-host ….I knew back then that you would be the only one who could ever replace Meredith (I loved her). No matter what you say or do you will “always” continue to be my idol because of your talent and honesty…..KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK WHOOP WE LOVE YA

oh, one more thing. I watched Whoopi Goldberg’s late night interview show. Yes, I was the one. She was great at interviews, she let her subjects answer with more than a few words. She let the subject speak. Interviewing is harder than it looks and Ms. Goldberg was terrific . I’m glad she is on The View, but she is more talented/intelligent than is allowed on that program. Maybe an occasional special/interivew show??? Or, maybe she could interview people she finds interesting on wowowow.????? WowOWow. wowOwow. WhAtEveR.

Excellent suggestion for Whoopi! It is amazing isn’t it how many interviewers do not let the person talk? Chris Matthews for one!
