Whoopi: 'I Don't Think I Was Ever Mean'

© AP

LIZ: Now look, is it true that you’re antisocial?

WHOOPI: Yes.

LIZ: I hear you like to stay in bed with your hat on and eat and drink and watch TV and movies. And you hate to go out.

WHOOPI: When I’m on the bus — you know I don’t fly — so when I’m on my bus, that’s me. I’m in the bed with my movies and my books, and that’s how I travel across the country.

LIZ: Also, we understand, Whoopi, that you are a very rich woman. And you know our Mary Wells Lawrence has written a posting for us, How to Become a Millionaire. So, we wondered if you have any ideas about how to do that.

WHOOPI: You know what? I say get the scratch-offs and hope for the best. I like my lottery tickets. One of the things I’ve never been good at was making dough.

LIZ: Really? Oh, but you work so hard. I guess you’ve just earned it. You’ve made more movies than almost anybody. I counted them. There were just hundreds of them!

WHOOPI: Yeah. But I don’t own any of them. You know what I mean?

LIZ: So you don’t feel you’ve made gobs of money from acting?

WHOOPI: No. For other people I have, yes. I put many people’s children through college.

LIZ: You create controversy everywhere you go. I don’t think you mean to. I think this just happens. Is that because you’re a true contrarian and a revolutionary at heart?

WHOOPI: I don’t know if I’m a true contrarian, but I just have a lot of questions and sometimes I’ve discovered that asking questions is not what people want you to do. They want you to just …

LIZ: Go along.

WHOOPI: Yes, and I’m not good at it because I find that if you just go along, it’s easy for people to leave you out there hanging. See, because everybody talks a good game until the shit hits the fan. And when the shit hits the fan, everybody disappears.

LIZ: Right. Well I remember that you’ve been misunderstood in many instances. I mean, the remarks about George W. Bush were taken out of context and then when you first came on The View, I thought there was a lot of mishigosh. And so, chiefly, what do people misunderstand about you?

WHOOPI: I think, more than anything, that my intentions are never to aggravate anybody, but just to understand and to say what I see. Mort Sahl was one of my heroes. And Mort always said what he saw. He reported on what he saw. His humor was about us as human beings. And so, in my crazy way, I thought I could do the same thing.

LIZ: Well, you know, I think it’s true. I don’t think you’re honestly confrontational.

WHOOPI: No, I’m not.

LIZ: You’re extremely civilized. If everybody in the world was as polite and nice as you are, it would be great. But I think you just say what you think and people are so full of bullshit that they don’t know what they’re getting.

WHOOPI: Well, it’s the funniest thing, you know. Since I took this job on The View, people say, “Well, you’re so nice.” And I said to myself, “Well, I was never …” I don’t think I was ever mean. I’ve had my moments with people who aggravated me. You know, where I’ve … I might have, like anybody else, gotten pissed off about something. But surely not … not evil. And I’m a comic. And so my job is to make it funny.

Hey there Whoopi. I am yet another fan - I’d watch just about any production that you are a part of. Thank you for the laughs that lift and the thoughts that expand. You are a national treasure. Mean, antisocial? What is it about our culture that equates being honest and/or skeptical as being mean or hateful? Why is it that one (especially females) must be a manic, melodramatic, shimmying, eyelash batting, ass-kissing, bobble-headed poser to get a positive review in our society? How is it that the review of those who are reserved, peace/quiet-loving, thoughtful, skeptical, questioning seekers has been diminished into something to be looked upon as antisocial, abhorrent and negative?

Whoopi I fee so fortunate to be in the world when you are. To witness your person. I can truly see you succeeding as a Whoopi “Alred Hitchcock”…you could write it yourself! Love the View and WOW.

Thanks Whoopi for the comment about doing a one woman show possibly about Moms Mabley. When I was smaller growing up in Alabama I would sneak downstairs get my parents Mom’s Mabley albums and come up and listen. She was one funny lady. I was once asked if I had an opportunity to met two people (that had already passed on to glory) who whould it be and one of my choices was Moms. By the way, do you remember the name of a movie that I saw on TV were Moms Mabley played a character. All I remember is a scene on the bus where she was offering her fried chicken to a man and there was a black man who was running for city counsel or some office and he was “I think” the neighbor? If you have the time and know the name of the movie I would love to rent it. Keep up the great work that you do. Handle Ms. Republican on the show as well.

Whoopi, I’m going to pull a Simon Cowl and be a little mean—topical, and apropos. You are undoubtedly the Ferrari. But there is a difference between careening out-of-control and stalling out. On The View, could you do Enzo and all your fast-track fans a favor, and give revving a try? Otherwise, could you occasionally sweep the dead brain cells off the table that are colllecting in front of you? I watch them plunk so rhythmically from your underutilized, albeit, nice head.

Whoopi could you come to the U.K. and reprise that TV show where you play a small hotel owner with a Muslim manager and various other smaller charactes. I think this wolud be helpful over here in the U.K.if only to calm people down about Muslems.

I have almost every movie you ever made, and love them all! You bring to your movies a feeling of the real in your performances. I love your wisdom, candor, and the ability to bring people to ask about themselves when a movie is done, and my favorite is probably the color purple, where the beauty was in the soul that kept shining through! Lifetime of blessings to you in all you do, and don’t ever change! I think you would make a great president!

Ms. G, I adore you! I think that there should be more black/African American, Spanish and Asian women on the panel. I am so happy you are here, but I don’t see many posts from you or do I? Anyways, I like the site it is all about SSSSSS … super smart, super strong, super sexy! Tell ‘em to get some more flava up in here! As I mentioned a second ago I like the site but it is a little stiff! I could say more but I won’t.

Whoopi , I love you on The View! All your movies. The Color Purple was the best, that is one of those movies that I can watch over and over. Great cast, your the best!! You make me lmao in Ghost especially when Patrick Swayze is singing “Henry the Eighth” to you when your trying to sleep and when you were having a hard time giving the Nuns the blood money. (” I willl”) I’m laughing now just thinking about you clenching your teeth and smiling. I’m sure you have not one mean bone in your body. (you’ve shown that especially when responding to Elizabeth, I see you taking a deep breath and showing her the other side of her opinions.) She will learn.

Hi Whoopi I watched the entire Tony Awards on last evening, and it was a joy to behold. In recent years I have stopped watching these types of shows because the hosts were dull and completely not funny, the presentations were long and overstated and I viewed them as a waste of valuable time on my part. However, you always know how to create something from nothing and fill in what would have normally been dead space with funny antedotes. So thank you Whoopi for hosting the Tony’s and I hope to see you again next year.

I never knew u were antisocial, u dont appear so on the view at all. Of course u would just sit there and listen to the other ladies ask questions, whilst I want u to ask some but u dont appear antisocial like me. I guess we have lots in common Whoopi. I really want u to know that u shouldnt listen to those idiots who say mean things about u at all because teens like me love u and we think ur soooo kooolll, in fact I created a spot for u on fanpop.com and u have forty one fans so far. I am a dedicated fan of ur spot and I will always be because i want to support u as much as I can. Love u Whoopi Felicia

Ur so rite, sometimes u cant ask any and every question to anyone, because they say why the hell are u asking them that for. Take for example ur thing on the view wid Elisabeth, everyone was waiting to jump down ur throat at any minute. SHe merely broke down because Elisabeth is like that. But u stood ur ground and u didnot tell her off but u told her why things are different now for her and for u. I think ur views on the usage of the word was somewhat sensible enough. I really like u. LOve u Whoopi Felicia
