Does a Little Obama 'Elitism' Go a Long Way in Politics?

Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama
AP

JOAN: What is this thing of Obama being perceived as an elitist? Is it important? Is it going to harm him? What do you think?

LIZ: I think it does harm him. And the National Review story on Michelle Obama complaining to ladies in Ohio about how could the two of them live on $500,000 a year, and how they couldn’t pay for their children’s tennis and dancing lessons, or piano lessons, or something. But, honestly, you have to admire the Obamas. They’re an upscale, young American couple. They’re a model for every downtrodden person in America. So, I think a little elitism goes a long way. I think it both helps and hurts. It’s like people having money or being rich. Well everybody wants that. The public wants the same thing. So I think it’s sort of a two-edged sword. But do I think the Obamas are intellectual elitists, probably. They’re smarter than the rest of us.

LESLEY: You come at this issue the way we come at the whole campaign now – now that we’re this deep in. And that is with certain preconceived opinions. If you like Obama, I don’t think it bothers you at all. If you don’t like Obama, it’s a huge thing. And this is why, to me – and I’ve always said this to some criticism – when it comes to the president, the most important thing the people vote on is likability. That you get down to hearing these discussions about the issues and they get so confusing. Sometimes the difference between the candidates – and this is true between Obama and Hillary Clinton – the differences on issues is so small that it’s very difficult to listen, where you can’t go back and re-read and figure out exactly who said what. And then, if they disagree, the argument goes back and forth and back and forth and you agree when this one says it and then you agree when the other one says it. You get lost. So you end up making your decision on whether you trust them, whether you’re comfortable with them, whether they convey a sense of confidence, comfortableness in their skin. And I think that Hillary Clinton runs the risk, in this particular question of whether he’s elitist, of being too heavy-handed. And I noticed the other day there was a new poll. It said that her negatives on this likability factor have gone way up as she keeps pounding away at this. It could end up where, yes, he’s painted as an elitist. But she gets hurt more than he does by it.

JOAN: Whoopi?

WHOOPI: I just think it’s the most ridiculous thing in the world. You know, it’s a phenomenon which, had both candidates been white, wouldn’t be as big an issue as it’s become, because they painted John Kennedy the same way, that he was an elitist. So now they’re saying Obama’s an elitist because he pretty much said that when this is happening and this is happening and this is happening, people cling to those things that they know best, that they’re most comfortable with. He didn’t say, "Only people in Pennsylvania." He said, "Folks who have gone through this kind of experience." He didn’t say, "Only white people." He didn’t say, "Only poor people." And it’s the same with rich white folks. They cling to what they know. All of us do it.

LESLEY: Whoopi, I think the fear the Democrats have with this issue is not because he’s a person of color. It’s because the Republicans latch onto this exact kind of argument time and again and make it work for them. As with Adlai Stevenson, with Dukakis, with Kerry, with Gore …

WHOOPI: Well, what’s the matter is the Democrats are an elitist group. That’s the truth.

Please OC — can’t we give the woman a chance. How much longer do we have to wait for a woman president? What the candidates have to say and do to get elected has little to do with what they will actually do as president. It’s sad, but true. Don’t blame Hillary Clinton for that. You have to work with the system that exists in order to make changes I believe. After making history by virtue of simply being elected, I don’t think she will be nearly as likely to make the kinds of expedient compromises her husband felt compelled to make in order to insure reelection. My dream is that Dems. will control the White House for he next 16 years. It will take at least that long to repair the damage of the Bush/Cheney/Halliburton cabal. The most likely scenario for this would be a Clinton/Obama ticket and then Obama could become the first African American president in 2016 (or sooner) when the U.S. and the planet will need a 21st century Abraham Lincoln. I believe he has the potential to be such a president in due time. Thanks for your wonderful contributions to this site. As always, it is a privilege to be able to post here.

I think Obama is comin’ thru as a wuss and Clinton is comin’ thru as a puss” I assume you are using these slang terms, to mean weak and that that is interchangeable with womanly. That is underscored by the remark about Michelle Obama having balls. She doesn’t. And she doesn’t need them.

I am not sure that elitism is the right term. Being part of the great silent middle class, I think many of us worry that neither party really understands what the working class, blue collar folks deal with on a every day basis. So many of the elected seem very distant from the every day issues the littel guy has to deal with. Can they relate to the retail worker that stands at a cash register for 8 hours a day? How ‘bout them sore feet? Do they have a real clue what a budget is and how to make it work, because you only have X amount of dollars? You have to shop at Wal-Mart because it makes the food money go further, and thank God for some coupons. Ya’, and we eat chili because it is cheap and filling, when you add in those generic crackers. Maybe they should try living on social security for a few months with the current price of goods. We just want to see some real interest in what is real, most of us really don’t give a damn about sniper fire in some far away place before a speech, we are worried about or kids or grand kids education and future. Lets skip the elitism and just try to relate to the work a day joe and his family. We don’t make $500,000 a year, lots of us would be over the top to make $50,000 a year. This is the greates country in the world, lets try to keep that way. Phil

Philip- RE “This is the greatest country in the world, lets try and keep it that way.” Well it USED to be, BEFORE Bush who was just voted the worst president in history by 66% of historians polled. Oh, and there’s that little Pentagon’s report calling Bush’s illegal invasion of Iraq a ‘major debacle.’ http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Top_News/2008/04/18/pentagon_report_iraq_wa… And gee the fact of use of depleted uranium, a WMD, on civilian populations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tLoHedg3xo The measurement of ‘greatness’ of a country can be measured: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcz_NHAFGS0 What’s that you say, Condi, tortures really really bad and we don’t do it? http://condimustgo.com/?utm_source=rgemail http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz7UNxnOI3M Hmmm, Bush’s phony war that cost the US taxpayers $3 trillion, made China our REPO man, and enriched Halliburton, BlackWater, Exxon, etc was PLANNED before 911? Whoa, that don’t sound right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inyCkCvqRO0 And why the US is in a recession. Thank you George Bush! http://www.truemajorityaction.org/oreos/ Oh, and the fellow who predicted the Oct 1987 stock market crash says the fundamentals are now worst: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjS60TaD_J8 So, yeah folks, put your faith in demonized terms created by flat-landers to fool people into voting GOP, again. Niffy thinking! And have a nice day.

If “elitist” means smart, clear, wise, logical, careful, truthful, and transparent, then I’m all for a president with those characteristics. Another thought: Mrs. Clinton play acts, so I don’t think most thoughtful folks take her remarks seriously.

I don’t think “elitist” means those things. If I had a job pulling down over $300,000 a year, I could express one of two things: either “America has been very good to me” or “when am I going to get mine”. The “when am I going to get mine” is elitist because it assumes that everyone who matters is making $300,000 or more. The way you appeal to Hispanics and Pennsylvania hunters and “those weird people in Maine” is to treat all of your fellow Americans with respect. Their American experience is 100% as valid as anyone else’s. And don’t try to psychoanalyze them; that’s always rude.

Hey. I’m bitter and I admit it. That O’bama, elitist or not, recongnizes my bitterness and calls it what it is, it sorta comforting. I don’t own a gun and I don’t go to church, but obviously, I’m not the only one on wowOwow who’s bitter about the state of our nation.

Laura, thanks for your comments. I also noted Joan Juliet Buck’s elitist remark about “those weird people in Maine,” ha, ha.

My mother taught me that “words can never harm you”. Sorry Mom, you are wrong and this is a clear example of that. I agree with A B, Dora and Cheryl. And I am sick of hearing the discussion, this one excepted. The thing I found unsettling in the Obama remark was “clinging to their guns”. Given the tragedy spread by persons with guns in this country (Virginia Tech and murder on the street) I immediately reacted by wondering, “does he mean he expects them to cling to those guns because they may use them?” “Of course not” I thought. How quickly we leap to the pejorative interpretation as opposed to the compassionate. To get to the original question, a little elitism (using the synonym of snobbery for a definition) goes a very long way! In this case I give Obama the benefit of the doubt. I drop the “guns” phrase from his statement and agree with him.

I don’t think its elitism that pisses people off, its condescendsion - its the idea of talking down to/about your fellow party members - “they’re angry/bitter”. I think the democrats (and I am one) have trouble with certain members of our party. Condescension can be smelled a mile away and some of our current party leaders reak of it…

Here’s a topic that this ecclectic bunch of broads won’t talk about: Israeli’s and their sympathizers tentacles that control most of our institutions to the point where we are despised the world over and quite bankrupt as well. No Way! Taboooooo !!

I think we already did. If not, maybe tomorrow.

Really? I always thought it was angry white men that controlled this country and messed it up so badly. And then they shifted blame to the jewish people, as they have historically. Let’s discuss that, instead, Mark…oh, wait! That’s Tabooooo !!
