Candice Bergen: What Murphy Brown Would Have Said About Sarah Palin

A Conversation with Candice Bergen, Cynthia McFadden and Liz Smith on the Palin Effect
CANDICE: Well, it’s very hard not to have had the show during this because it just is such a feast. Murphy was thrown out of the White House by the Clintons on a number of occasions, but I think Murphy would have reconciled with Hillary, who she might have overlapped with at Wellesley, and would have supported Hillary until Hillary dropped out, and then just thrown everything behind Obama – which is sort of what I did.

LIZ: But, Murphy was a correspondent. Would they have thrown her off of the network?

CANDICE: Oh, well, she would have had to have done it, subversively, of course.

LIZ: Yes, she would have been chomping at the bit all the time.

CYNTHIA: I think she would have had an interview with Sarah Palin. What do you think?

CANDICE: Oh, God, that would have been fantastic.

CYNTHIA: Wouldn’t you have loved that?

LIZ: Well, I know that Candy doesn’t wish to die young, so there’s no way Murphy could come back. But, God, it would be great if Murphy could come back.

CANDICE: As long as Sarah Palin remained peak entertainment and wasn’t elected, what a galvanizing moment.

LIZ: Well, I think she’ll become a really interesting, polarizing point because she presents the Republican party with a real dilemma. Are they going her way or are they going to ever go back to being the "establishment conservatives" they were once — the elite, the rich, the privileged.

CYNTHIA: Well, I can tell you, on that lawn in Phoenix on election night, people were furious that Sarah Palin didn’t speak. They wanted to hear from Sarah. She definitely had spoken to a deep segment of the Republican party and it’ll be interesting to see what happens next.

LIZ: What was the reason she didn’t speak?

CYNTHIA: Oh, it was complicated. You know, Joe Biden didn’t speak either. But there was something going on and I can tell you only what happened. We first got notification that she was going out – presumably to speak, prior to John McCain taking the podium. But we all went out to be in position. About 15 minutes after that we got an e-mail from her press secretary saying that she was not going to speak and might not even be on the podium, or on the stage. Now, the speculation has been — I don’t know that this is true or not true — the speculation was that she was in fact prepared to speak, and that she was told by the McCain people that she would not be speaking, and wasn’t too happy about that. Clearly there was trouble in paradise. It’s not McCain and Palin themselves. Their staffs had it with each other by that point. We’ve seen some of that in the press in the last few days.

LIZ: Well, ladies, we haven’t heard the end of her yet. A lot of people delight in her and she drives a lot of other people crazy. So you see, we aren’t done yet. If she stays in the Republican party in a very large manner, it sure won’t be the party of William Buckley anymore, will it? I mean, it’ll be a party not of devout intellectuals but only of evangelicals and really right-wing people. And I hate to say this, a lot of people that don’t think very straight, in my humble opinion. So it’ll either kill the Republican party or the party could persevere because of Sarah Palin. That would be very bad, in my opinion.

I’m not sure what type of bird you bought, but turkeys that take their own lives seem to be very popular. Of course turkeys that commit suicide are more expensive. The ones that jump off tall buildings are the cheapest as they’re more messy. The most expensive turkeys, are the ones that hang themselves. When serving a turkey that took its own life to your relatives for Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll at least have that peace of mind knowing it wasn’t M U R D E R E D !!!!!!!LMFAOOOO!!!!! Okay, Frank, well-done on that one! And I, too, am sick of the Palin threads. It’s done. Let’s move FORWARD, please.

Frank, First off I started off my post by talking about Murphy Brown which I enjoyed as I do Boston Legal, I find the writing on these shows to be very thought provoking. If you haven’t watched Boston legal, Denny Crain who is played by William Shatner is a big NRA gun fan thus the Palin reference, it would make a funny episode as they have some things in common. Yes you are right compared to the atrocities that happen in our world some of this is silly. As for strong women needed you are right and frankly if I knew a way to wipe out all the men in those countries other then the young boys I would say go for it because most of the men in those countries are a waste of food and take up resources that would be better served by their portion going to women, unfortunately as far as I know that is not possible, sad but true. I don’t hate other women, as for Sarah Palin I do not agree with her views and that is why I was not for her. I agree she knows a lot about oil and gas but so did George Bush and we can all see where our energy policy is today. I would call not call it successful. Most of us were not for her because her policies and ours conflict. We should not have to be for her because we share anatomy. Lastly the only thing I said about the turkey interview is that I didn’t think the female gov of my state would have done the interview with that in the background. I am from the midwest but I think in Alaska hunting and butchering is just more an everyday part of life so they don’t think as much about it. I said very little about the turkey go back and read my post.

Murphy had both class and brains; and would have stayed above the fray. I’d like to think she would have told Ms Palin, “Enjoy your trip back to Alaska!”, turned around while rolling her eyes in disbelief, and walked away. Perhaps we could have heard her muttering, “Too easy; too easy; too easy” on her way off stage.

Murphy Brown is a fictional character, apparently so is Candis Bergan. Long after Obama is reduced to an asterisk in the history books, winter heating bills will be lower because of Sarah Palin. Sarah was the only national candidate with an affirmative contribution to energy. The rest of you Palin haters, go back to your Desperate Housewife reruns and stop reinforcing stereotypes of gaggling geese.

Sarah Palin would have been proud of Murphy Brown for not aborting her baby.

You go, Mandy! Sarah Palin would have been the “change” we hear so much about. It certainly isn’t shaping up to be so with the new administration. Recycled Clintonians and products of the Chicago Demo machine is what we’re being offered. The only upside thus far has been Mr. Obama has realized that to have half a chance at re-election in four years will require him to be at the least a centerist, much to the chagrin of his left-wing liberal supporters.

I am very eager to find out if the libs go after Caroline Kennedy in the manner they went after Palin. Somehow, I don’t think so.

Keeping It Real
If you only know one kind of woman, you would not understand Sara Palin or people’s love for her. But I always thought she modeled a well-represented type of woman in our society…a woman’s whose absolute enthusiasm, charisma and real leadership qualities eclipse her education or experiences. And you know what? I like her. Maybe not as a political leader, but as a person. Sara Palin “types” have always played an important role in our society. We know them from their presence in our communities — activists in education, personal growth, health care, and yes, soccer. They are on a well-meaning path to learn and grow, assert themselves and make a positive difference — often on behalf of their children. Not deep, perhaps, but compelling nonetheless. I am sorry she became such a joke because I think she had some very admirable qualities. I just don’t think she has the chops to be my president.

Obviously, these three dolts don’t realize that it’s common in Africa, where that particular minister was from, to ask protection from ‘witches’. It’s the same as being asked for protection from Satan. Never trust people who live in New York or California when they talk about a subject they know nothing about, specifically religion. They have none.

I think Sarah Palin is an embarrassment to the Republican party. She may be an amazing mother (I would never take that away from any woman), however, she is a lousy politician that is good at reading a teleprompter. She failed Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric’s interviews. She needs to go away for awhile, study and then perhaps come back. Her own state faces a trillion dollar debt factor, I never heard her say that in any of her cute speeches. According to her she was a success. Minus one trillion doesn’t equal success to me. Troopergate is also a problem that involves her own husband. Sounds like another power couple I have read about.
