Cokie Roberts: 'Hillary Is Negotiating Her Withdrawal'

© AP

A Q&A with ABC News correspondent Cokie Roberts.

LESLEY: Let’s talk about Hillary. I’m wondering, how do you explain her unwillingness, at this point, to throw in the towel? Does she really think she has a shot at winning this? Is she addicted to campaigning, which is my favorite possibility here. She’s kind of unable to give it up. Does she think there’s another shoe to drop with Obama? What do you think?

COKIE: I think that she is taking a somewhat graceful and prolonged exit. You know, when you’ve been running this hard and have won this much, you don’t just go. And the truth is, when you’re this significant a candidate you negotiate a withdrawal. It’s almost like a plea bargain. You start talking about paying off debt and about convention roles. There are all kinds of things that have to be negotiated. But I also do think that she feels strongly that she is the better candidate — and you can make a good case of that given the way the votes played out in these primaries and caucuses — and that by staying in until it’s over, perhaps something will happen.

LESLEY: Assuming, though, that he does win this nomination, do you think she will be anything less than enthusiastically behind him and corralling her supporters into his camp? Or, is there any chance there’ll be a moment like the one at the ‘80 convention.

COKIE: No, I don’t think there’s going to be that kind of moment. I think that Hillary Clinton is too interested in her own political future to be seen as someone who is tearing the party apart at that moment.

LESLEY: Will she go all out, do you think?

COKIE: I think she’d campaign for him. But, you can’t move your supporters. You know that, Lesley. The endorsements hardly matter at all, particularly at the presidential level. Or she can say, "I want everybody to vote for him. I think he’s terrific. I think he should be president." And those working-class Democrats who voted for her can say, "Have yourself a ball, Hillary. I’m voting for John McCain."

LESLEY: And do you think that’s going to happen?

COKIE: I do think that’s going to happen in a lot of cases.

LESLEY: Really?

COKIE: The fact that John McCain is doing as well as he is in a year that should by all odds be an overwhelmingly Democratic year tells you that there’s a lot of unhappiness with these Democratic candidates. You know, many people say this was the year when the Democrats needed to nominate a boring white guy, somebody who you didn’t even hear talk because all he needed to have was "D" after his name.

LESLEY: Show up, right?

COKIE: Show up. Exactly. And instead they’ve had this very exciting, historic nomination process. But it might not work so well for them in the end.

Doesn’t wowowow have anyone monitoring the website for offensive and inappropriate content? I refer to the comment by “Alesson O” on 5/11/2008, at 3:56, stating that He [i.e., Obama] could be accused of raping a child and having a love child, and it would all get swept under the carpet.” While I am aware that not everyone favors Senator Obama as the Democratic candidate, this statement clearly crosses the line. I am disappointed that the high-profile women behind this enterprise do not devote sufficient resources to monitoring the website to remove such garbage after an appropriate period of time. This garbage has been on the site for 3+ days. It should be removed immediately.

Goodness, did you even read what was said? “COULD BE” is a speculative statement, not a statement of fact.

Along with the giving Sen. Clinton “the whalloping she deserves?” These are really offensive, WOW.

I’d say to Hillary: “Get over it!” It’s time for her to take her dignified leave, if she’s capable of it. Cokie Roberts describes Hillary’s resistance to acceptance as part of traditional Washington protocol—and we’ve had enough of that and the present status quo. The rituals of the past are corrupt and have to go. The Clintons felt entitled to the nomination for Hillary, and it didn’t work out. They are old hat, and it’s time for them to find other employment, if possible. I AM READY FOR CHANGE, ESPECIALLY IN WASHINGTON, and at 78 voted in my first primary for Obama, whose autobiography and present performance convince me he is the man of the future, and I don’t mean that he is perfect. I want to leave a strong legacy for my children and grandchildren, and I’m relieved that I lived to see the public awareness of the perils of the Bush administration and the end of the shenanigans of the Clinton dynasty. Chelsea should get another life, Hillary finish her service as a state senator, and of course, Bill can keep on ranting and getting paid for it! It’s over, Folks. As a senior, I recognize McCain’s memory lapses and changing his mind so many times, not because he is principled, but because he forgot! Put him out to pasture, and let’s get on with the business of government—-but please, no more old hokey pokey! Cheney and his ilk (Rove, etc) should be relieved of all government service, and future employers should be warned—CONTAMINATED GOODS! My family has suggested that I run for some office as the Grandmother campaigner for this 46 year old candidate. In my heart I do, for I’ve lived a long time, and I’m tired of the tiresome and dangerous maneuvers in Washington. Get Bush out of Israel, for his stupidity is mixed with viciousness, and perhaps Laura, his dear librarian, can get him to read a comic strip, for he needs a horse to ride on more than a desk to write his vetoes!

Residents of Oregon have yet to vote in the primary elections. Why on earth should I listen to those of you who tell me “it’s over” before I vote? And the namecalling and downright nastiness is juvenile and beneath you. I’m very interested in your opinions, but sufficiently bored with the bickering to think that it endangers the longevity of the site to all but those who engage in an endless ideological rant. How about a nice glass of good champagne and a negotiated truce?

I’m a great admirer of Cokie Roberts but with all due respect I’m not particularly interested in one more story about Hillary negotiating a withdrawal from the race. This is not some sport or video game. Far more vital to the national interest is a withdrawal from Iraq to staunch the bleeding of our young men and women in battle. It’s Bush who should throw in the towel—before his term is out. Latest outrage: suggesting Obama is an “appeaser” in his speech before the Knesset in Israel, a nation borne out of the ashes of Auschwitz. Hillary will survive her disappointment. Meanwhile, each day brings more news of yet more deaths in that immoral and unconscionable war. While I am sad for her, I weep for all those young lives lost in Iraq.
