Liz Smith on Hillary: 'A Lot of Obama's Supporters Would Just Die if He Chose Her'

© AP

Editor’s Note: Sen. Clinton announced this week that she is going to give her support to Sen. Obama and give up the race. What happens to the vice presidency now? Who do you think Obama will choose? Do you think he, in order to unite the party, will choose Hillary as his running mate? These are the questions we posed to Liz, Mary, Judith and Jane.

LIZ: I just had lunch with one of Hillary’s backers, a person who is an aide to Hillary. And she says that she always encouraged her to try and get the vice-presidential slot if she couldn’t win the presidency. But now she feels that Obama probably won’t offer it, because they really don’t want her. They just want her to campaign for him, but they don’t want her to be vice president. Imagine the baggage she would have as the vice president – she and Bill. The vice president doesn’t have very much to do – just serves at the will of the president; presides over the Senate. And, while it’s the second most important job, it’s kind of a nothing job. It’s a strange thing.

MARY: But the current vice president has been very powerful.

JUDITH: You haven’t pointed out that it’s second in line to the presidency.

LIZ: That’s right. That’s the advantage.

JUDITH: I think she should go for a good job. She’s got a bargaining position, and the Supreme Court would be ideal for her. But when Sen. Obama gave his victory speech, it sounded suspiciously like he might offer her something terrible, like being head of H.H.S.[Dept. of Health and Human Services].

LIZ: This person, the one who’s her aide, doesn’t believe she would want to be in the cabinet.

JUDITH: I would think not, especially H.H.S., which is such a difficult position.

LIZ: Well, I think she’d make a dandy secretary of state. I can see her traveling around the world to restore the reputation of this country, at the will of her president. Or, she can remain the senator of New York and bide her time and see what happens. My friend believes that whatever her faults were in this campaign should be blamed on Mark Penn who refused to set up any kind of grassroots thing for her and didn’t use the Internet properly. So Obama took all of that away from them. Most of Hillary’s people now really blame this guy. And for all of her faults in the campaign, she remains a very dedicated and capable and driven kind of person. And we’ve got to remember — 18 million Americans wanted her for president.

Look at Hillary’s enormous support among these older, uneducated women in America, and how marginalized they are by everybody else – like they don’t count. And she really made them count. And I don’t think there’s any way they can vanquish her. I think she’ll come back in one way or another. And Obama’s not ignoring that. He’ll do something, I think. He’ll offer her something – maybe something she really wants.

JUDITH: The things on her list of what she wants were on the domestic side — not on the foreign affairs side. What would be more powerful than the Supreme Court?

LIZ: I don’t know, though. I feel, Judith, it’s too sort of sedentary for her.

JUDITH: Really?

MARY: Don’t you have to have some legal background?

JUDITH: You don’t have to have been a judge, no. You have to be a lawyer, which she is.

LIZ: She’s a good lawyer.

JUDITH: Yes, she’s a lawyer. And if she wants to advance those issues, which were all domestic issues, I would think that that would be the place. And it’s a much better job than being president, much less vice president.

LIZ: Well what do you think, Mary?

Andrea Mitchell just laughed this morning when it was suggested to her that Hillary might want to be a Supreme Court Judge. Andrea almost choked by saying that it about the last thing Senator Clinton would like. HC is a legislator/ she likes to write policy/ she wants to be in the fray, not above it. And Andrea concluded that a Supreme spot just would not suit HC. This sounds all very logical to me. It was suggested by some at this website a few days ago that Senator Clinton probably could not get past a senatorial hearing for one of the Cabinet positions. MONEY is the issue. How and from where did she and the former President get all THAT money since he left office. I find it suspicious and I think the Senate might also…..I don’t think she could get passed the confirmation hearing. She will only be on the ticket as VP if Senator Obama is persuaded or has deduced that he cannot win in November without her presence or participation. Only then will she get offered the spot! Finally, the headline here is that a large number of Senator Obama’s supporters would “just die” if Senator Clinton was named to the ticket. And that is probably accurate. However, it is nothing compared to what the Republicans would do if somehow she was selected as Senator McCain’s running mate, as some have written among these threads. We would stage a rebellion that would be heard all around the United States in protest. Sorry, but thinking of Senator Clinton joining up with her favorite people, the “vast right conspiracy”, is just too absurd.

I agree. I doubt McCain would choose her, although they have worked together well. But it’s fascinating, isn’t it, how we all dare to seem to know (including Andrea Mitchell) what Hillary wants.

Andrea Mitchell can laugh as much as she wants. One of the most valuable things about Sandra Day O’Connor was that she was a legislator and liked to write up solutions to policy problems. It gave her a real pragmatic understanding of how to interpret legislation and made her a person who built alliances on the Court. Presently the Supreme Cout lacks that type of understanding. Hillary Clinton, if she chose to accept such a nomination, would be wonderful on the Supreme Court.

The Clintons left The White House in defacto bankruptcy due to PERSONAL LEGAL BILLS due to copious scandals. HRC and Bill’s billion dollar haul — over 7 years — will be seriously scrutinized, and Bill’s “activities” will make Clarence Thomas look like a picnic. The Clintons took the chance this scrutiny was worth it = for the Presidency (and their net worth) and Americans’ desire to be rid of the mediocre Republican Administration and Congress would help the us stomach the overflow. The Clintons won’t want to endure this for VP or Supreme Court or Cabinet. HRC needs to remain in the Senate — until she runs AGAIN — triangulating Barack into a loss by leveraging women to vote AGAINST our interests to show solidarity with her. Women may fall for this, but New Yorkers won’t. Big question — WHAT ARE HILLARY AND BILL GOING TO DO ABOUT NEW YORKERS who will not tolerate their conduct and (as this week) rein them in??? New Yorkers are their biggest challenge because we are diverse and information consumers on steroids. It isn’t easy to dangle race-gender-baiting candy in front of us and we jump at it, leaving our interests behind. HRC didn’t begin these games until AFTER Super Tuesday. She KNEW she couldn’t before — New York voted.

I voted for Obama in the Illinois primary with the attitude that, if Clinton got the nomination I would vote for her in November. But as far as the VP position goes, I can’t think of a real, practical, upside of her as VP. Sure, strategically for the election she MIGHT be a plus, bringing her supporters along. But most will vote Obama anyway when truly faced with a decision between him and McCain. But Obama with Clinton as his VP will be reminiscent of Bush/Cheney, if only in appearance, in that here again there will be those wondering who is actually in charge. Then there is Bill… good or bad he is still our ex-president which means he will still be in the spotlight, still often interviewed, speaking publically all around the world and living a very public life. For Obama to have to contend with President Clinton’s comments for 4-8 years could very well be an unnecessary distraction from business. And finally, there is the unseemly reason for Hillary to seek the VP position which was even mentioned in this discussion… she’s there if something happens to Obama. Since, with her other political choices there is no reason for her to want the job EXEPT for the chance of something happening to him. So in that case in taking the job would it would appear that she is just there to wait in the wings for her chance to take over. That is not a good image for a new administration, nor would it be good for Hillary.

The main reason for a VP, is like having a runner up at the Miss America pageant. If the winner is unable to complete their reign for some reason, the runner up is ready to step into the role. Hillary weathered the storm. Hillary got the popular vote. Hillary can do the job. That’s the reason why she should be chosen for VP. You want a strong second. It’s called keeping the nation secure.
