Liz Smith on Hillary: 'A Lot of Obama's Supporters Would Just Die if He Chose Her'

© AP

Editor’s Note: Sen. Clinton announced this week that she is going to give her support to Sen. Obama and give up the race. What happens to the vice presidency now? Who do you think Obama will choose? Do you think he, in order to unite the party, will choose Hillary as his running mate? These are the questions we posed to Liz, Mary, Judith and Jane.

LIZ: I just had lunch with one of Hillary’s backers, a person who is an aide to Hillary. And she says that she always encouraged her to try and get the vice-presidential slot if she couldn’t win the presidency. But now she feels that Obama probably won’t offer it, because they really don’t want her. They just want her to campaign for him, but they don’t want her to be vice president. Imagine the baggage she would have as the vice president – she and Bill. The vice president doesn’t have very much to do – just serves at the will of the president; presides over the Senate. And, while it’s the second most important job, it’s kind of a nothing job. It’s a strange thing.

MARY: But the current vice president has been very powerful.

JUDITH: You haven’t pointed out that it’s second in line to the presidency.

LIZ: That’s right. That’s the advantage.

JUDITH: I think she should go for a good job. She’s got a bargaining position, and the Supreme Court would be ideal for her. But when Sen. Obama gave his victory speech, it sounded suspiciously like he might offer her something terrible, like being head of H.H.S.[Dept. of Health and Human Services].

LIZ: This person, the one who’s her aide, doesn’t believe she would want to be in the cabinet.

JUDITH: I would think not, especially H.H.S., which is such a difficult position.

LIZ: Well, I think she’d make a dandy secretary of state. I can see her traveling around the world to restore the reputation of this country, at the will of her president. Or, she can remain the senator of New York and bide her time and see what happens. My friend believes that whatever her faults were in this campaign should be blamed on Mark Penn who refused to set up any kind of grassroots thing for her and didn’t use the Internet properly. So Obama took all of that away from them. Most of Hillary’s people now really blame this guy. And for all of her faults in the campaign, she remains a very dedicated and capable and driven kind of person. And we’ve got to remember — 18 million Americans wanted her for president.

Look at Hillary’s enormous support among these older, uneducated women in America, and how marginalized they are by everybody else – like they don’t count. And she really made them count. And I don’t think there’s any way they can vanquish her. I think she’ll come back in one way or another. And Obama’s not ignoring that. He’ll do something, I think. He’ll offer her something – maybe something she really wants.

JUDITH: The things on her list of what she wants were on the domestic side — not on the foreign affairs side. What would be more powerful than the Supreme Court?

LIZ: I don’t know, though. I feel, Judith, it’s too sort of sedentary for her.

JUDITH: Really?

MARY: Don’t you have to have some legal background?

JUDITH: You don’t have to have been a judge, no. You have to be a lawyer, which she is.

LIZ: She’s a good lawyer.

JUDITH: Yes, she’s a lawyer. And if she wants to advance those issues, which were all domestic issues, I would think that that would be the place. And it’s a much better job than being president, much less vice president.

LIZ: Well what do you think, Mary?

Maurine- I read the link….although I didn’t need to read it now, and I didn;t need to read it in 2002 when I began working full time trying to prevent the phony war that HRC voted for while also admitting she didn’t even read the military assessment before voting. I knew the horror that would follow. Anyone who votes for people who voted for this debacle has blood on their hands. You don’t say you oppose something, or complain about it, and then vote for the people who created it while dissing Obama whose comments in 2002 were prophetic….because only an idiot couldn’t see the writing on the wall of what was to come. “FROM ONE MOTHER TO ANOTHER, I’M BEGGING YOU” people who vote for war mongers are divorced from their own humanity, and are as despicable as the war mongers. Congress has 18% ‘approval” rating as a result and many of these so called elected officials will be voted out. Just as HRC did not win the nomination because of her 2002 war vote. The Myopic Mugsy’s can fall all over themselves “ROTFLOL” and all the other childish nonesense while millions lose limbs, homes, business, lives, while 2.3M are turned into refugees, they can pretend it doesn’t matter to vote for war mongers because they want a woman president….but moral courage is a very clear thing. You vote for what is right and not for what is self-serving. Obama will win because the youth vote…they are anti-war, they aren’t compromised, they are activists, and the Millenneals and Gen Xers outnumber the yuppies and they aren’t voting for John “war for 100 years” McSame nor did they vote for HRC. So diss Renata all you want Mugsy Cabal….she is on the side of moral right….and that’s the side that’s going to prevail. Not more of the corporate lackeys that the Bush-Clinton-Bush-wanna-be Clinton dynasty’s represent.

See, Suzanne, the problem here that I suspect everyone else can see is that you have no real argument against the statements I’ve posted in the past few days, so the only thing you can do is call me names and attempt to belittle me and try to dismiss my postings. But I believe the women on the site can make up their own minds, and decide for themselves what they think, and whether they want to post something. And many people agree with Renata, with me, and with Taylor. Obviously not always the same ones. I have my opinions and will express them, and I will continue to do so. So go suck eggs.

One Historic Night, Two Americas - Frank Rich Remarkably, neither Mrs. Clinton nor Mr. McCain had the grace to offer a salute to Mr. Obama’s epochal political breakthrough, which reverberated so powerfully across the country and throughout the world. By being so small and ungenerous, they made him look taller. Their inability to pivot even briefly from partisan self-interest could not be a more telling symptom of the dysfunctional Washington culture Mr. Obama aspires to mend. —————————————————————————————————- Ditto, this website…perhaps, the ONLY media distribution channel in the world to NOT address this historic moment — AT ALL — Sunday, June 8, 2008!

Renata, the real historic moment will come when the Democratic Party’s presumptive nominee is sworn in as the 44th president, and Barak and Michelle bring Camelot back to Washington D.C. after 35 years. Why don’t you stop incessantly spewing your negative message and promoting your puzzling agenda, and spend more time trying to unite Americans, and the wonderful women who devote so much of their time and energy attempting to create common ground and bring enlightenment to this website? I admire the achievements of Senator Obama and his movement every bit as much as you, I believe, but frankly I would quickly become disenchanted if I thought even a fraction of his supporters were as selfishly partisan and intolerant as your posts make you appear to be.

Michael—Why don’t you remember that this is a woman’s site and that there is Free Speech….and not be a toady to the Mugsy Cabal that try to control Free Speech. Renata is free to posts what she wishes….we have to put up with all the denigration of Obama, and will refute it as we see fit. If you don’t like something….scroll past. And I didn’t see a post where Renata claimed that the Clintons made 1 billion in the last 7 years —-where was that? I know they made $109K….”the wonderful women who devote so much of their time and energy attempting to create common ground and bring enlightenment to this website?” I wouldn’t characterized the Mugsy Cabal as wonderful or enlightened….by extension you are saying that Renata isn’t…and she is much more enlightened, informed, honest, and intelligent alone than the Mugsy’s Cabal is combined. So how about not being a coward and jumping on the gang that is trying to shut up Renata?? None of your business so butt out.

I love this Mugsy Cabal thing. I have never been a Cabal before. But doesn’t a Cartel make money—can we be a Cartel instead?

Star, the cartel is above the masthead, in the middle. But maybe we should be a cartel, I think it has more “sing” to it. I don’t know. We could have the Mugsy Peabody Cabal and Dowdy Pantsuit Cartel, maybe?

See now you are saying someone should shut up because they are saying someone else should shut up, though really I think he or she was just disagreeing. [I say he or she because I had a female roommate once whose name was Michael and I learned not to jump to conclusions.] I remain puzzled that people who support Obama are doing something profoundly un-Obama, that is spewing hatred at the person who just promised to work her heart out to get him elected. Politics is a team sport, you know. And I do not understand the Mugsy Cabal thing at all. Is this some sort of poetic license? A cabal is supposed to be secret and I see nothing particularly secret about the disagreements here. I think the disagreements are refreshing. If we all had the same life experiences, we might have the same opinions, but since we do not have the same life experiences, it is hardly to be expected that we could all agree. Now Musgy does have a church, but it is open to everyone. Something about cookie dough.

Yes, and Mugsy Inc jumps down the throat of ANY man who doesn’t say what they like, ie “This is a site for women over 40 what part of that do you not understand? leave.” etc…. and he is quite acceptable when he toes their line. I repeat Michael, the Mugsy Cabal are doing a fine job bashing Renata without your throwing your weight in, quite cowardly and thus far I haven’t had the impression that you were that type. Renata has a right to Free Speech on a public board and I will continue to defend her until this cabal doesn’t just ignore what they don’t like, which is as they preached for Mark Klein.

But Renata is not the ONLY person with free speech on this website, such as it is. Free speech, i.e., the First Amendment, does not actually apply to words typed onto a website in the sense that the owners of the website can delete the words, even though government may not. As long as we refrain from hate speech and ad hominem remarks, we may actually learn something from each other. Unfortunately, we are not doing so well.

Why don’t you ask your friend what she wrote? I’m not going to waste my time doing your bidding when your friend declines to correct her slander. You’re not the first woman to object to my comments on this site, dear, but certainly the rudest and one of the most obtuse. There are lots of women here, not many ladies I’m afraid. I say this because my Mom was one of the greatest, and she’d have quit reading this thread about 950 posts ago. I’ll post this at the end of the thread and cite the page where this can be found.
