Jesus Was a Communist! (and Other Insights From David Cay Johnston's Conversation With Whoopi Goldberg)

Editor’s note: When people say it isn’t rocket science, ever wonder what it is that makes rocket science so darn hard? In our Decoder series, Whoopi Goldberg seeks out experts across a wide spectrum of fields to find out how things work, from the encryption on your iPod to the fine print on your tax bill. So next time you see a rocket, don’t be surprised if it’s one Whoopi built herself.

David Cay Johnston is a former writer for The New York Times and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Free Lunch.

DAVID: We’ve got to get back to policies that focus on people, on the next generation, on stability, on providing for – as the Europeans have figured out, you want to provide for the shocks that hit people. I mean, you know, you’re walking down the street and the cops shoot it out with some bandit and a stray bullet hits you – well, tough luck, you know, you’re going to become poor. And what sense does that make? And we need policies that focus on people instead of dollars and capital.

WHOOPI: Does it take people recognizing that basically what’s happening [to the tax code] is fundamentally bad? Because you don’t want to say to people, “OK, taxes are bad.” They’re not bad.

DAVID: Right. Whoopi, what gave birth to democracy 2500 years ago?

WHOOPI: No taxation without representation.

DAVID: No, no, no. That’s not what gave birth to it. Ancient Athens had an absolute head tax. Everybody paid the same amount, rich or poor. And for 80 percent of Athenians it was a horrible burden. And it led to all sorts of misbehavior and stuff. But if you didn’t pay the tax they literally took you to the city gates and sent you away, which was a death sentence.

WHOOPI: Right.

DAVID: And then they devised this … this moral principal: the greater your economic gain because you live in Athens, since there’s no gain if you don’t live in Athens, the greater the burden of tax you should bear to maintain Athens. And when they invented that idea they invented democracy. And yet you’ll hear all sorts of politicians tell you, “Progressive income tax is a Communist idea. It was the second plank of the Communist Manifesto.” Adam Smith was in favor of this before Karl Marx was a gleam in his daddy’s eye. So we have to get back to people understanding that they’ve been sold a bill of goods here. And I’ll do a little commercial. I mean, the reason I wrote Perfectly Legal and Free Lunch was to get people to see how the system really works.

So that’s my little contribution to the world, is trying to show people, here’s what’s in the official government data. I mean, people who politically, totally dislike me do not challenge the facts in my books. The second thing is people have to start talking about political issues, whether it’s at the hair salon or on the steps at church or the synagogue, or hanging out with your friends having a beer on Friday afternoon … or Saturday afternoon. We’ve got to start talking about the role of government in our lives. Government is central to our lives.

WHOOPI: Right.

Frannie, we lived in souther Spain for two years when our children were quite young. We celebrated Three Kings Day, which was actually Epiphany, gaudish parades, with brightly colored costumes of orange, red, silver, green; regally crowned kings tossed a multivariety of candies onto the revelers, tiny plastic repsentative Jesuses drew wide-eyed believers to the center of the street to grab a provident masterpiece for the year ahead. The music of subdued carols seemed tame while surrounded by the blaring of the brass instruments that provided a perfect refrain for the excitement of words we did not know, but melodies we embraced in our hearts. And in Porugal, the archipelago, 350 miles from the port of Lisbon. Within the centurty old buildings stood elaborate statutes to revered saints of the village’ each year, these homages to the were paraded through the streets to remind the inhabitents of thrie place in the historty ot this glorious land.

Just a quick hi to everyone. I have a house full of family but have snuck up here to get my Wow fix. Reply to you Frank––I believe Jesus was a Pisces––the old fish symbol–pagan astrological symbolism is a fascinating subject. As far as desert islands I’ll go with the still and Maurine’s know how––we can write our own books. And finally I noticed some body by the name of Vicki Lee? posting on all the threads about a dating or porn service–––she uses the term “hotties” and “cuties”–– Does she not realize she is in the wrong house?

Phyllis, Isn’t it unbelievable when that type of phishing shows up? It is remarkable. They must not know how to read, and then just cut and paste their ad.

Ms. Whoopi, it will be a very very long while before i forget the image of you as Mary Poppins floating around the stage at the Tony’s. Was that brilliant, or what? Sharing wealth has always been termed “subversive” by whom? Oh, the people who have the money. Always it’s the Democrats are “tax and spend, tax and spend,” but of course as usual the Republicans are leaving office with the largest federal deficit in history. But it’s the Democrats that are the problem. The old shell game, oldest game in the world. Convince the hoi polloi that they are bad people if they want a fair share. And then nobody can sell them on working together to have the best life for the greatest number of people. Because anyone who tries to get a fair shake for the common people is obviously a “trouble-maker.” Which is why they killed Jesus in the first place. Cause he was making a fuss. But what the people who pull that stuff need to remember is that sooner or later, there comes a reckoning. Wine and blood run together on the cobblestoned streets of Paris. Sooner or later.

Anyone who wants to can “share their wealth”. You can share your wealth all you want and I am free to share mine, if I so chose. It is the government FORCING me or anyone else to “share their wealth” that is the problem. People should be free to chose to do what they wish with their hard earned income. I have “shared my wealth” with many, some I knew, some I didn’t and will continue to do so at my discretion. I object to the government taking a sizeable portion of my income and deciding who they want to give it to. We all know the government is inept, why would you want to entrust them with even more power over our lives.

America of The People has been sold to the predatory Corporations by their lackeys in Congress. Now we have a corrupt “Shock Doctrine/Disaster Capitalism” government, and America’s first Praetorian Guard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ka3Pb_StJn4&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqM4tKPDlR8 With so many making fortunes on an illegal war, protected by an unregulated Shadow Army [Blackwater, et al] not answerable to Congress or law……how does that get turned around? No one in this gravy-train of untouchable “Soliders of Fortune” and conjoined interests of oil companies/arms makers wants it to end. They’ll do anything to retain control of Congress, meaning reselect a GWB third term. I’m all for optimism and hope. But there are certain granite realities that make me wonder how will America become America again?

Blackwater works for our government, the state department, the armed forces. They have 100% success rate in protecting leaders and diplomats. I so wish Benazir Bhutto could have benefited from their expertise. When you want stability in a region you can’t allow the corrupt government sectors, or dissidents to assassinate the opposition like you see in Lebannon and Zimbabwe. There are now millions of refugees into South Africa because of the instability created by Mugabe who is assassinating his opposition and burning alive their wives and children. Blackwater only hires tier-one level former service people like green berets, navy seals, and has created an unparalleled security force that can handle the worst or the worst. The UN is completely impotent in this regard even though they claim to have a “security force.” When our friends were deployed with the security forces in Bosnia he said it was a joke. They were told NOT to intervene in conflict, so they would barbecue while a battle raged in the distance that they were not allowed to participate in. UN stance was: Let them kill each other.
