Lesley Stahl Asks: Has Public Outrage on Excess Reached 'Tipping Point'?

CYNTHIA: Did you hear the joke the other night from one of the late-night talk shows: “Well, you know, now we know why Democrats don’t mind tax increases. They don’t pay the taxes.”

LIZ: Well, some of us do. And I know so many people that really pay lots of attention to their taxes. And when I think about what I’ve been through with the Internal Revenue Service, I don’t think I’ve ever particularly gotten a break, and I’ve had a lot of intense examinations. So I can’t get over these people. The minute the shadow of the White House falls on you, you better remember whether you paid your taxes or not. This is a really dismaying beginning for Democrats. I know it’s not the end of the world, and Obama will overcome and all of that, but, boy, it’s really depressing for those of us who’ve been paying attention. I’ve been filing taxes since I was 16. And you all know how old I am.

LESLEY: The question is really whether they deliberately set out to cheat the government. And I have to say, I don’t believe that they did. I have a feeling that they hire accountants whose job is to try to save you as much money as possible. And maybe they’re the ones that are getting a little cute here. If, like me, you want to give these people the benefit of the doubt, you say, “You know, they really didn’t know. They honestly, truly didn’t know that having a car and driver was a taxable item.” I find the tax code to be incomprehensible. Completely impenetrable, and I am willing to believe that they’re not venal.

CYNTHIA: But in Mr. Geithner’s case, by way of example, he knew perfectly well.

LESLEY: That’s an egregious case. I was really thinking of Daschle. And I know the bill was enormous, but I looked at it and I thought, “I can see how people wouldn’t know you’re supposed to pay taxes on X, Y and Z.”

LIZ: You’re saying they didn’t really realize that they owe taxes or whatever — their ignorance being no excuse, but nevertheless that was the excuse. But they’re the ones who have to blow the whistle on themselves eventually. This wasn’t discovered by outside forces, that they hadn’t paid taxes. Didn’t they all just fess up at the last minute?

LESLEY: Some of the cases were discovered during the vetting process. But Daschle put it out there.

CYNTHIA: I think Geithner and Daschle are in rather different situations.

LESLEY: Yeah, you’re right.

CYNTHIA: Geithner, the one who didn’t get disqualified, and Daschle, the one who did – it seems to me Geithner’s offense is worse.

LESLEY: No, that’s right – in the sense that they had identified that he hadn’t paid his taxes for …

CYNTHIA: In ’03 and ’04, he paid ‘em. And guess what? He had the same job and had evaded the same taxes in ’01 and ’02.

LESLEY: And he knew that and didn’t pay them.

CYNTHIA: They decided to go ahead and approve Geithner, and Daschle stepped down. Why?

LESLEY: Let’s face it, Daschle would have been approved, I think, if Nancy Killefer hadn’t withdrawn her own name. And what were her taxes? Nine hundred dollars?

LIZ: Don’t some say she was sort of a sacrificial lamb?

LESLEY: I think that she withdrew because she just didn’t want to be the second one. But if it had only been Geithner, I think they would have gone and tried for Daschle, because there wouldn’t have been such an uproar. It was public opinion that forced him out.

Elaine, I did go there and read it and I do try to keep an open mind, but it seems to me, that the facts and what-if’s are so twisted together, there is no valid point made. For instance, “IF” Barack Sr. was still married, then his marriage to Barack Jr.’s mother was invalid and even here, if an illegal immigrant woman (which Ann Dunham was not) has a child inside the U. S. borders, that child is a legal U. S. citizen. Saying Barack has the same citizenship as his father doesn’t hold water. His father didn’t hang around, not unlike many fathers that impregnate and then leave the scene. Barack Obama Jr. is Hawaiian born and a U. S. Citizen of birth. Years ago, after leaving nursing, I worked in Medical records, which includes birth certificates. About the only time I ever saw or heard of birth certificates being changed was when the child was given up for adoption and it is a real serious legal issue to falsify a birth certificate which even a President is not allowed to do, nor above the law, if he did. If there had been such a fraud (and there wasn’t) Hawaii and the U. S. would be pressing charges. I have known of FBI agents to arrest hospital personnel for dabbling in birth ceritificate theft. I am convinced Barack Obama is who and what he says he is-complete transparacy and no hidden agenda.

JJ GB, I appreciate the fact that you say you went into this site, however, I find it difficult at best that if, after having read every piece of information regarding this topic, you would walk away throughly convinced that Obama, as you state, is who you think him to be. I could certainly understand a questionable summation, BUT a certainty, NO, not at all. You also state, simplisticaly, I might add that you are aware that ‘it is a real serious legal issue’ to falsify a birth certificate. With all due respect, I would certainly hope that you would not rest laurels that Documents have been forged on a consistent basis, wherefore in order to conseal information that is not wanted to be veiwed or known. Please revisit these links. http://www.obamabirthcertificatefacts.org/

This thread was an attempt to have a discussion about the excesses of Wall Street, CEOs and greed and whether or not the American public is over a line with outrage. However, the same group of people have come in here just to spew anti-Obama spin like they have been doing in every other thread, ruin any chance of intelligent dialogue pertaining to the subject of the thread. Rainbow is correct in her comments.

De B. Of course, you’re right, but I don’t get where the accusation of “not being qualified” comes from and wondered if he cared to explain his comment. We do (all, or many of us) tend to get off subject on a thread of discussion. Didn’t mean to wander off course.

I wasn’t referring to you JJ… it is the Obama bashers. They come into every thread and just keep repeating the same garbage, derailing any hope of any sort of dialogue related to the article. You can go from thread to thread and you’ll see the same people spreading the same spin and making the same outrageous comments.

My hat is off to you DeBurca, one of the reasons I read these comments is because of the links that allow me to clarify things so I am not led down the prim-rose path. It gets old with the same ole BS being spewed time after time! Keep up the good work keep the information coming & help keep things on track. Believing the best instead of the worst invites an open mind! With all the news that is one sided put in front of us daily, it’s hard to know who is mis-quoting, who is taking things out of context and who wants to keep the soup stirred on their behalf We gave Bush 8 years we can’t give Obama a month. PLEASE!!!

All these Senators and Congressmen lying and cheating there own people for millions of dollars and selling out this country though lobbyist! But you want to talk about Wall Street folks who at lease worked for there money! And on top of that, when these Wall Street types was making the big money they gave large sums of it to folks like Obama and the rest of the Democrats in Washington who had there hands out accepting this money from them! Now they want to play like they are better than these guys! Please spare me!

People people, what is wrong with you people? This is your country! These idiots Congressmen and Senators can’t do a single thing we don’t want them to. Now that they have approved and passed this Bill, we the American people have the power and the right to vote them out of office in the next two years! THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS!

Lori F, I couldn’t agree with you more. Problem is that most people will forget. And there are so many issues and scandals, it’s hard to keep the players and the games separate. Most of them will go into hiding for awhile and emerge a new problem. There aren’t enough people running at once to choose. We get one or two and that’s it. Most of the time we have to choose bad over evil. It’s a sad situation but it’s better than the alternative of any other country’s way of doing politics.

jules: We get one or two and that’s it. About a third of the H or R will be up for re-election in 2010. To make it easy, here is a roster of Democratic representatives who voted NO for the so-called stimulus bill: Bright and Griffith of Alabama, Minnich of Idaho, Peterson of Minnesota, Taylor of Mississippi, Shuler of N Carolina, and DeFazio of Oregon. Clyburn of S Carolina abstained. One other voted present, not sure who it was. All other Dems voted for the bill, why re-elect them if they follow a party line rather than listening to their constituents. If a Republican runs against them, vote Republican. A Republican can’t be any worst than a Dem who ignores you.

Marjorie…yes, you are right…I read the list too of the dems who voted against the “Sucker Package”…they will be outcasted by their party just as the 3 repubs will be by their party….fair game!! The sad thing is, people were calling in against the package and some of the phone lines were tied up for hours…they were elected by the people, then they turned their back on those same people…trust me, the people “will” remember when election time rolls around again…..they will be mud in their eyes….what goes around, comes around!

You keep calling it a “sucker package”… is that what Limbaugh is calling it now?

Nope…my words…why are you so obsessed with Rush anyway…you are constantly calling his name out? Just askin’!

It sounded like the sort of adolescent talking point that spews from Limbaugh. You know, hateful, 2-3 word slogans, easy for his fans to remember and repeat to anyone who’ll listen.
