Lesley Stahl Asks: Has Public Outrage on Excess Reached 'Tipping Point'?

CYNTHIA: Did you hear the joke the other night from one of the late-night talk shows: “Well, you know, now we know why Democrats don’t mind tax increases. They don’t pay the taxes.”

LIZ: Well, some of us do. And I know so many people that really pay lots of attention to their taxes. And when I think about what I’ve been through with the Internal Revenue Service, I don’t think I’ve ever particularly gotten a break, and I’ve had a lot of intense examinations. So I can’t get over these people. The minute the shadow of the White House falls on you, you better remember whether you paid your taxes or not. This is a really dismaying beginning for Democrats. I know it’s not the end of the world, and Obama will overcome and all of that, but, boy, it’s really depressing for those of us who’ve been paying attention. I’ve been filing taxes since I was 16. And you all know how old I am.

LESLEY: The question is really whether they deliberately set out to cheat the government. And I have to say, I don’t believe that they did. I have a feeling that they hire accountants whose job is to try to save you as much money as possible. And maybe they’re the ones that are getting a little cute here. If, like me, you want to give these people the benefit of the doubt, you say, “You know, they really didn’t know. They honestly, truly didn’t know that having a car and driver was a taxable item.” I find the tax code to be incomprehensible. Completely impenetrable, and I am willing to believe that they’re not venal.

CYNTHIA: But in Mr. Geithner’s case, by way of example, he knew perfectly well.

LESLEY: That’s an egregious case. I was really thinking of Daschle. And I know the bill was enormous, but I looked at it and I thought, “I can see how people wouldn’t know you’re supposed to pay taxes on X, Y and Z.”

LIZ: You’re saying they didn’t really realize that they owe taxes or whatever — their ignorance being no excuse, but nevertheless that was the excuse. But they’re the ones who have to blow the whistle on themselves eventually. This wasn’t discovered by outside forces, that they hadn’t paid taxes. Didn’t they all just fess up at the last minute?

LESLEY: Some of the cases were discovered during the vetting process. But Daschle put it out there.

CYNTHIA: I think Geithner and Daschle are in rather different situations.

LESLEY: Yeah, you’re right.

CYNTHIA: Geithner, the one who didn’t get disqualified, and Daschle, the one who did – it seems to me Geithner’s offense is worse.

LESLEY: No, that’s right – in the sense that they had identified that he hadn’t paid his taxes for …

CYNTHIA: In ’03 and ’04, he paid ‘em. And guess what? He had the same job and had evaded the same taxes in ’01 and ’02.

LESLEY: And he knew that and didn’t pay them.

CYNTHIA: They decided to go ahead and approve Geithner, and Daschle stepped down. Why?

LESLEY: Let’s face it, Daschle would have been approved, I think, if Nancy Killefer hadn’t withdrawn her own name. And what were her taxes? Nine hundred dollars?

LIZ: Don’t some say she was sort of a sacrificial lamb?

LESLEY: I think that she withdrew because she just didn’t want to be the second one. But if it had only been Geithner, I think they would have gone and tried for Daschle, because there wouldn’t have been such an uproar. It was public opinion that forced him out.

I am always sickened when a child is hurt.  Whether it is a kidnapping or being born to a psychotic mother.  I am sure that the police are going to be very careful with this predator, we have to let them do their job.  I would agree, time IS running out.  I cannot imagine what it would be like to lose a child.  God help the little girl Kaleigh.

Are you saying this under the right topic? I’m sure you have a point, but the topic is people who didn’t pay their taxes and have had to give up the jobs they were about to take in the Obama Administration because of their tax woes.

Not paying taxes is probably one of the perks of being a politician or multimillionaire. The only time it gets exposed is in a time like this, of appointments in a new administration. They aren’t going to give away the game by saying “we all do it”.

Of course the public is outraged. Some of the problems we as a nation are facing now came from no real oversight over the past thirty years. Every time someone spoke of deregulation people jumped on the bandwagon saying we needed less government interference. Those regulations were in place for a reason, to protect the public. A lot of people that could see what was happening stayed quiet to protect their jobs. Whistleblowers were routinely fired not supported. Few of the issues they brought up were seriously investigated. This went not just for government and financial institutions but corporations as well. Look at the peanut company scandal with tainted foods – that is our latest but certainly not the only one in existence. We can blame anything and anyone but we also have to realize that we voted some of these incompetents in office allowing this to happen. Our change has to start at the local level as well as the national elections. .

Lesley: “They honestly, truly didn’t know that having a car and driver was a taxable item.” Lesley, Daschle has a reputation for being a “good guy” , but he also failed to pay more than $100,000 in back taxes. If someone sends a car for you, you most certainly don’t have to pay a tax for the consideration, but when someone provides you with a car EVERY week, over several years, it is a HUGE gift and most certainly is taxable. Additionally, it was provided by his close friend, Leo Hindery, who is the founder of the private equity firm Intermedia Advisors and the former president of the YES cable TV network that carries Yankees baseball and Devils hockey. In 2005, Daschle became a consultant and chairman of the executive advisory board at InterMedia Advisors. The car and driver was not officially part of his compensation from Intermedia. Here is the clincher — as Senate majority leader he is given the use of a car and driver at taxpayer expense. Why he didn’t use the Senate’s car and driver instead is something I don’t understand. It makes me wonder whether the car and driver he did use was a part of a scheme to avoid income taxes. Even if it wasn’t, it certainly raises suspicions. Consider, game show contestants — there are always taxes on all those prizes. I wonder whether actors pay taxes on all those expensive Hollywood swag bags — they certainly aren’t filled with life savers.

My god, do you all not understand what is happening in our world at this time? Are you all so narrow in your thinking and concepts that you are incapable of see how this crisis is affecting the Worldwide Economy? Which is more important to you? Seeing the Obama Administration fail or starting procedures and actions to stablize both our economical systems and the world economy? I have never see so much negativism in my life. No one wants to go through this. Certainly I do not. But, when bills are made, they have to be paid…eventually the chickens come home to roost. With the attitudes I have seen reflected on this site, determined to display as much rancor, negative energy and abject fear of the unknown, it makes me wonder and worry about the world my grandchildren will inherit. And, you, Lori, are right about one thing…the power is in our hands; let us pray and hope it is the 70% that can get us through this. Perhaps if people read the issues at hand and the possible solutions written by experts instead of listening to the various fear-laden pundits, we can see some can-do attitude instead of this constant kicking of the dead horse that developed because of 8 years of irresponsibility. http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/Files/rc/reports/2009/02_american_compe… The stimulus plan is not perfect. And, it will only be the beginning of a long and difficult road ahead. But, positive, inventive attitudes are spawned out of the worst crises. We can and we will! We must believe in ourselves and we must start caring beyond ourselves. This is the world, people; it extends past our backyards…

Diana, This thread seems to have been hijacked yet again from the Obama bashers. They’ve turned a thread which was meant to spur a discussion about the excesses of Wall Street, CEOs and greed, into another forum to spew ignorance, right wing spin and hatred toward our president. These people are really dragging the entire wowowow site down to the level of a FOX rant.
