Marlo Thomas: The Media Steals Our Chances of a Fair Election

© Shutterstock

JOAN: Does the deliberate dumbing down of the news have the same effect as censorship, by cutting the public off from information that we need to make our decisions?

MARY: I say this as an old advertising pro: The news is for sale. The news is just a factor, like entertainment. The ultimate person who is responsible for whether the news is good, bad or indifferent is the viewer, because if the news is not good, fewer and fewer people will watch it.

LILY: People didn’t used to try to make money on the news. We lived through an era when the networks prided themselves on their news department.

MARY: Yes. That may be true.

LILY: Not because it was a money maker.

MARY: The news around this election has been particularly obnoxious, idiotic. But you’re getting the news that is essentially what most of the people are willing to pay for, or what they want. I know that sounds vastly oversimplified. But it is a fact.

LILY: Look how many good people they have destroyed just by petty humiliations. There’s nothing worse in this culture than being discounted or laughed at. They destroyed Gore. They destroyed Kerry as any kind of viable candidate, just by making fun of him windsurfing.

MARLO: Look what they did to Hillary, from the very beginning. With her headband, and her not wanting to bake cookies. My God, you would have thought this woman had robbed a bank.

JOAN: There was this great op-ed piece by Elizabeth Edwards where she wrote that what we’re getting, “what is left, is the Cliffs Notes of the news, or what I call strobe-light journalism.” As intelligent women, when you turn on the American news, do you desperately watch to try and find something? Or do you go on the Internet instead?

MARLO: I always think that if I read enough stuff, possibly somewhere in the middle I’ll find the truth. But the Joe Klein article in Time was so interesting. And he said we get this low-level information and use it as news. You know — what Barack’s bowling score is. All this foolish stuff — what Hillary was wearing and what Bill Clinton said to a guy on the street. But nothing about the issues, nothing about what’s happening to this country, nothing about the war. The war is now on page 18. Iraq is, I think, now on the back of the paper. And we’re not interested in it. And today Bush is all excited about his $600 rebate. A $600 rebate is going to make up, he says, for the gas prices. How far will $600 take you?

JOAN: About 20 miles.

MARLO: And people buy it.

JOAN: Do you think there’s a will behind this deliberate stupidity of information that we’re being given?

MARY: That it’s manipulative?

JOAN: Not only treating the public with contempt but actually —

MARLO: Withholding. Yes, I think they’re withholding.

JOAN: As in, “If we tell them all about Barack’s score – bowling score – they won’t pay attention to anything else.”

MARY: Why don’t we do something about it? I mean, it is possible to do something about it, if we’re really that interested. Why don’t we band together and simply stop it? After the last election, which was certainly questionable, we just accepted — I mean, we are an accepting country.

MARLO: I asked Bill Clinton, at a dinner party, why he and the first George Bush didn’t go to Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, and ask them to come up with a foolproof way that our elections would be fair and honest.

JOAN: Brilliant.

Elizabeth….Thanks for both the links…the Onion piece is very well done and funny…even though true. And need thousands of more people like the two Sec of State. Am sure you know that Halliburton and Enron jets were used to ferry the paid GOP staffers to FL to stage ‘riots’ to disrupt the vote recount, and that Bush’s cousin, and on-air reporter on Fox called Fl for Bush before there was any projection/count and thus the MSM followed suit within minutes. And practice makes perfect. All that overthrowing of democratically elected leaders under earlier Reagan-Bush admins and replacing them with dictator puppets has really paid off. I must re-watch Tea with Mussolini. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv2ueIQMFdw

I don’t know if they have stolen our chances at a FAIR election…what kind of question is that…still a Democracy I hope. The question is almost as looney as the post that claimed Halliburton and Enron flew people to Florida to riot after the Gore/Bush debacle. ROFLMAO. Anyway, I think the media has influenced our election by not vetting Obama (out of blind worship) and letting people in many States vote for him before knowing the truth and what would come out later. Now the Democrats are stuck with an unelectable candidate.

bean, never doubt suzanne’s research. my cousin grew up in florida, and she was in my face about democrats being “mobs r us.” it would not surprise me in the least if cheney’s halliburton and ken lay’s enron flew paid republican staffers down to florida in 2000 to disrupt the vote count after the purging of the voter lists didn’t sufficiently sway the election.

And you think the right is looney? You have been taught by the looney left media that Halliburton and Enron are the enemy. My God, sometimes I am so ashamed to be female. BTW, Democrats are usually Mobs R us because a lot of them don’t work. Women, minorities and old male nerds (the Dem base) have the time. Try to get over the *stolen* election. Bush derangement syndrome is sooooo boring.

“Right Is Wrong: How the Lunatic Fringe Hijacked America, Shredded the Constitution, and Made Us All Less Safe” Arianna Huffington Category: Current Affairs Format: Hardcover, 400 pages On Sale: April 29, 2008 Price: $24.95 ISBN: 978-0-307-26966-9 (0-307-26966-3) With her trademark passion, intelligence, and devastating wit, Arianna Huffington tackles the issues that are crucial to this year’s presidential election and, even more so, to the fate of the country. Huffington makes the case that America has been hijacked from within by a radical element—the “lunatic fringe” of the Right that has taken over the Republican Party. Despite holding views at odds with the majority of Americans, these zealots have given us an endless war in Iraq, a sputtering economy, a health care system on life support, a war on science and reason, and an immoral embrace of torture. But they haven’t done it on their own: they have been enabled by a compliant media that act as if there is no such thing as truth and are more interested in cozying up to those in power than in holding them accountable, and by feckless Democrats who have allowed themselves to be intimidated into backing down again and again. Both a withering indictment and a hopeful call to arms, Right Is Wrong is an explosive, boldly incisive work that will help set the national agenda. Arianna Huffington is a nationally syndicated columnist, and the author of twelve books. She is also cohost of Left, Right & Center, public radio’s popular political roundtable program. In 2006, she was named to the Time 100, Time magazine’s list of the world’s one hundred most influential people. She graduated from Cambridge University with an M.A. in economics.

mary lou s— Never doubt Suzanne’s “research”? Oh, Pleeeeze, as you are all so fond of saying. She never admits when she is wrong, and puts information on here that is flat wrong or twisted in some way! Remember the “I am Dr. Klein” theory of hers? If not, look back in the archives at the Murdoch story and one of the gasoline stories. Right, she should have loads of credibility after that one, NOT! She doesn’t know what she is talking about and none of you ever check or question her information. Ya, you may go to whatever looney website she gets it from and say “ya, that confirms it!”. That’s not how you do research. I constantly find things she says that are ridiculous and getting it from the daily kos or media matters doesn’t give it any more credibility. She loves Wikipedia and You Tube. The hydrogen car that she reported on, well Wikipedia reports it as the hoax that is was. Guess she missed that “research”. It isn’t thermodynamically possible to do what that man said he did. And for those of you in Rio Linda, that’s physics, whose laws are undeniable. And the man died of an aneurism not foul play. Most of the time, I just scoll rapidly through her “posts”, but there are so many inaccuracies, there isn’t time to check them all. All of you want to believe what she puts out here because you are of the same mindset. But sorry, I don’t care how many “polls” say that people think GW is worse than OBL or Kim Jong Il or Satan, common sense and history just say this is not true and stupid people saying so doesn’t make it so. I am also so sick of this New Orleans/Katrina blaming Bush solely. The city and the state have been run by Dems for 50 years! They bear no blame!! Cut me a break. You didn’t see the same problems in Mississippi. The dow hit an all time high under GW. The economy started to head south when the Dems took over in 2006. Voter fraud? As I stated before, we didn’t hear ANYTHING about that after the 2006 elections. WHY-you think maybe because the Dems won that one? If the Dems win. it’s fair, if not then voter/election fraud. Who’s really stealing our elections? That fiasco in Fla was caused by ALGORE, the shananigans were caused by partisan Dems and a liberal FLA Supreme Court that thumbed it’s collective nose at the Constitution and the laws of Florida. All you people look at is what you want to see. Hope you are as good at ignoring the jihad when it reaches your doors.

And mary lou s, you have “boots on the ground” info from your cousin in Florida, proving what the Dems were up to down there. So, why are you so eager to believe Suzanne’s “Enron/Halliburton” conspiracy theory which you have absolutely no proof of? And did everyone forget that the networks called Florida for Gore at 8 Pm, basically giving the election to Al Gore. When they realized they called it too early, they had to retreact the result. It is just not accurate to say “Fox” called it for Bush at 2 am, without looking at the whole deal. So, giving half the information (ie. Suzanne) is as bad as giving false information. You know, like Rev. Wright’s remarks were “taken out of context”.

mary lou s— Just to clarify, I meant no disrespect to you. You have certainly been one of the nicer women on this site. But I just couldn’t let that remark about Suzanne’s research go unchallenged. And the “you” I spoke of, was directed to the Mugsy crowd, not you personally.

Mary Lous s—-Investigative BBC and London Guardian reporter Greg Palast wrote a book all about the Florida fiasco, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy” here’s an interview http://www.buzzflash.com/interviews/04/05/int04026.html Here’s a piece by a Pulitzer Prize winning writer in Salon about the stage riot by GOP staffers to disrupt the recount http://archive.salon.com/politics/feature/2000/11/28/miami/index.html Here’s from Reuters that Bush Inc used Enron and Halliburton jets. http://www.commondreams.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi?file=/headlines02/0803-01…. But, it doesn’t matter. Mute point….anyone who supports GWB and his so called policies is so far off the dime…they’d have voted for Hoover too given the chance.

Suzanne— For every source you cite, I can cite a source that attests to the opposite. One good example is Bill Sammons book, “At Any Cost-How Al Gore Tried to Steal the Election”. But one fact remains, Bush won EVERY recount. period. Even those that were conducted after the Supreme Court ruling. As to the Supreme Court ruling, the vote was 7-2 to overturn the Fla Supremes ruling—not even up for dabate. The Fla Supremes ignored Fla law and their ruling was deemed unconstitutional. The 5-4 decision was about the remedy. Like Scalia said, get over it.

Eleanor- You’re right- just because polls say it or the world “thinks” it, doesn’t mean that the U.S. is an going in the wrong direction or has the worst leader in the whole wide world, etc. “Majority Rules” does not mean that the majority is right. The economy and terrorism is what the US should be worring about- not about the sentiment of France, or any country, for that matter. In the time it took Obama to realize that his preacher is a nut-job, I think Bin Laden would be knocking at the white house door by the time Obama noticed… Anyway, great discussion by all..I wish I am able to keep up as much as the others…but I have a day job to get back to!

Igodessa— What moron in chief are you talking about? Clinton? When the USS Cole bombing, the twin towers the FIRST time, etc, etc, He is the reason 9/11 happened!!!!! If he had declared war instead of acting like it was a justice department problem—we wouldn’t be here today!!! So wake up and smell the coffee!! There haven’t been ANY attacks since 9/11. DO YOU THINK THAT IS A COINCIDENCE!!!! Blame Bush all you want, but I won’t submit to that type of idiotic thinking.

do you recall the so-called “wag the dog” syndrome, eleanor? as early as 1999 Clinton’s terrorism commission warned of the threats, but everyone (the media, republican controlled congress, scandal loving populace) was more concerned with monicagate - from the day your favorite president came into office the final commission’s report was available, and the urgency was clear - check this link for the facts about the bush administration’s lack of interest (as if the 9/11 Commission’s findings weren’t enough) http://archive.salon.com/politics/feature/2001/09/12/bush/ and by the way, it’s the congress, not the president, that declares war
