No Longer Shocking, Hillary Clinton Must Act Fast on Israel, Pakistan

© Getty Images
MARY: A lot of people were shocked by Mrs. Clinton at first.

JUDITH: A lot of people voted for her.

JULIA: In what way were people shocked by Hillary? On what level?

MARY:  She was opinionated. She felt that she had rights. She felt that she would do better; that she would control things better and she would make better decisions; that she would do better than the men around her.

JULIA: Well, now we’re going down a different road. I really do think that the initial reactions to Hillary, the negative reaction to Hillary in 1993, beginning with Clinton’s Inauguration, was “man or a woman, we didn’t elect her.” It seemed apparent that there was some weird marital bargain made and all of the sudden – Presto! — this woman who had sort of a semi-decent job at a semi-decent law firm in Little Rock was driving health-care policy and doing it behind closed doors in a really controlling way, a badly controlling way, like you’re accusing men of doing.  She could have been a little bit more adept, but "where did she come from and why do we care about what she thinks about healthcare?" was the initial question. And I think it was a valid one.

MARY: I agree with you. When we got into where she came from it wasn’t so great.

JULIA: The problem was not that she was a woman. It was because she was a pushy, unqualified woman that came out of nowhere. It was like "Why is the First Lady suddenly in charge of my life?" And now she’s respected. She’s done her hard work and I don’t think she shocks people anymore.

JUDITH: May I say something to the last part just for a minute? There was a very nasty reaction against her at the beginning of the Clinton administration. It was worse than a bad appointment would get. And that was always the complaint: “Well, who elected her?” Cabinet ministers aren’t elected either. They’re appointed. They’re the people that the president trusts. There was a special thing, as there often is for First Ladies — not, at least so far, for Mrs. Obama — of feeling that somehow she’s not a legitimate member of that group. The president can appoint a brother, an old pal, and that’s all right, but if the wife is doing something, then that’s wrong.

MARY: You know, Julia, I used the wrong word when I said people seem shocked. That’s not what I meant. What I meant is that, in that whole period, there always were a lot of men. She was the only important woman. It’s not that people were shocked, because everybody knew her very well. It’s just that she was like the men. She was very expectant and she was very powerful and she had very strong ideas. She was just like the men.

JULIA: Right. But back to what Judith said — I agree that the reaction was really strong and that, yes, the president might appoint his brother and they appoint Cabinet members and we don’t elect them. But, usually, when you appoint a Cabinet member they’ve got long, long years of service in their department. Hillary was much more abrasive when she first got to the White House. She’s definitely changed her whole act. Whether we’re talking about the First Lady or a First Man, I want to know why I should be paying attention to them first. I think it’s great that Michelle Obama seems to be a true partner to the president and they seem to have a very strong marriage. And I’m sure, like many First Ladies before her, she’ll give him support and advice and all that kind of stuff. But she’s playing it smarter than Hillary did. And I think that’s a good thing. If it were a man in the position, I’d feel the same way. I’d want to know why I should listen to his opinions.

Pakistan is a total disaster in the making—Israel has turned out to be, thanks to us and our idiotic stance in kowtowing to them, a disaster in the region in that no peace will ever be achieved as long as we keep supplying them with guns and ammo and nukes. As for Hamas and Hizbollah they are essentially Israeli creations thanks to the 1947-49 forcible dislocation of hundreds of thousands of Arabs into refugee camps. As for Iran and Syria they are doing nothing but keeping the pressure on Hamas and Hizbollah and supplying them with arms—the whole area is insane and I frankly think it’s too late to do anything about it. As for Afghanistan—let them fight it out with the Taliban—we should not be involved. There was a time when we could have done something and effectively destroyed the Taliban but not any more thanks to BushCo’s illegitimate and unnecessary war in Iraq. If the Taliban get Pakistan’s nukes the mid-east is going to go up in total conflagration which I’m sure the evangelical loonies here in the US will see as further proof of end times and their pastors will rake in even more money. All in all a fraking mess of epic proportions that we helped create.

I still feel Hillary can hand this job. She will find her strength and help us out of this mess.

I wish I had your hope Debra—I’ve seen 50 yrs of terror going on in that area and no longer have any hope left for them.

Regarding the headline of this blog, and continuing the conversation we were having about Helen Thomas on another blog here at WOWOW, it is obvious from this headline question, why Helen Thomas was asking the question she asked. She wanted to know how Hilary was moving forward in Pakistan, etc……and the President kind of side stepped the issue, in a way, and didn’t mention Hilary. The President was being sensitive and subtle, and so was Helen Thomas. Now other people in the media weren’t getting it. YOU GOT IT HERE. The same question Helen Thomas was asking at the President News Conference.

Suzanne, she also wanted the Israeli nukes brought out into the open—it’s something no one in either our or their gov’t talks about openly and yet everyone knows they have them. It’s about time we talk about them.

Right! She gave him the opportunity, but it appears that he is not ready to go there yet. But we must remember he hasn’t even been in office for a month, so the man deserves a little time to get everything together. I think most people what everything done now. And it’s not going to happen that way. Thanks for your response.

I think it is such a hot button issue the President doesn’t want to just talk about it as a response to a question at a press conference. Anything he says regarding the Middle East can have ramifications and I’m sure it’s best that he make statements that are thought out and worded correctly.

Yes! I would appreciate a thoughtful statement too, instead of a “off the cuff” statement to please the press. I hope we are done with that.

Good conversation. I get where Julia’s coming from. and agree with Mary on what Secretary Clinton should do in terms of gathering people around her and getting some new ideas. old ways and old ideas are the death knell of people who’ve been doing ANY job a long time.

Frank, as usual, has it right … in my opinion. This Israel situation may have passed the point of no return, and with the new winners in the election. Netanyahu and Livni, the hard liners are back in charge. However, Israel is still dependent on money from America, and yes, we should support the only democracy in the area, but what would happen if we told them we would suspend any aid until they dismantle the settlements in the West Bank, thus making way for a Palestinian State ? I think Hillary, and George Mitchell, are the last best hope to find some solution but it may be too late. As far as Hillary’s qualifications … I’ve always thought that she & Bill were a box set , total equals intellectually but aware that HE was the one who would be elected ( back in the old days .. the 90s ), in fact, I think he thinks SHE is the smarter one, and they worked together on every decision. It is the public that did not trust her because she was a woman. I also think we have the same thing going on now in the White House .. Barack & Michelle are a team and she has a lot f say in his decision making.

Yes EKA the West Bank and the Golan Heights need to be dispossessed by Israel and they need to stop kissing butt with the radical right wing settlers and forcibly evict them—say to Mars. Until a true Palestinian state is achieved there will be no peace in the area whatsoever.

Yup, unfortunately, I heard Bob Simon say “That ain’t gonna happen” We are all being held hostage by religious fervor, history and victimhood. And until THIS is settled the whole middle east is in jeopardy, with nuclear weapons.

The only “true Palestinian State” that would suffice for the Palestinian radicals would be the land currently called Israel. How is peace then possible?
