Post-Election Postmortem: Did the Election Help or Hurt Women in Politics?

JOAN:  I think it will dismember it; she appeals to the majority of the base. The base is 28 percent of the American electorate. And that means all the intellectuals in the Republican party who have already turned on her will not support her. I think it would be cataclysmic for that party, but I don’t think it will happen. She may try, but my bet is she would not make it. And, of course, four years is a lifetime in politics. We have no idea what … who the country would see as a potential leader by then.

JANE: I don’t think she will last. I think she’ll fade. Or she’ll go back to Alaska. Maybe if she does something stunning there. But she does have charisma. And when I first saw her, I thought she was like Jean Arthur in topsy-turvy versions of her movies, didn’t you? I mean, she seemed to have charm. And her speech, I thought, was so well delivered that I thought she was a star.

MARLO: She is a star.

JANE: She is a star. Exactly.

MARLO: And she’s funny. And she’s brave and she’s bold.

JANE: She is brave. I know.

MARLO: She’s very brave and bold and she seems fearless.

JANE: We want that from a woman.

JOAN: She’s also ignorant and maybe stupid. I mean, many people who know her don’t think she’s terribly smart. She’s quick. She’s a quick study.

JOAN: She has no depth of interest in anything.

JANE: And I think her ambition is what made us turn on her. Her ambition to take this kind of job or to take this kind of position, knowing that she’s not prepared for it, or not right for it.

MARLO: What about Dan Quayle? I mean, he wasn’t qualified or right. I wonder if anybody has the guts to say, “No, I’m not qualified.” Dan Quayle didn’t think he was.

JOAN: He had two terms in the Senate. I don’t think he saw himself as unqualified. He knew the issues a whole lot better than Sarah Palin. He had no presence.

JANE: He couldn’t spell potato and he couldn’t think on his feet

MARLO: But I don’t think he was an overly intelligent fellow. I kind of see them as the same, in terms of the grasp of the issues and ability … well, actually she’s a better speaker.

JOAN: She has a lot more presence. He was never a star. She’s a real star.

JANE: Do you think she tarnishes, enhances or has any long-standing impact on the idea of a woman as a president or vice president? I don’t think she’s helped the cause.

MARLO: I think in the wake of Hillary, Palin’s a non-issue. I just think that Hillary is such a qualified human being, whether you want her for president or not, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, but she’s a very qualified human being, and held her own on that stage with all those guys, all those men, in all those debates. Sarah Palin could never do that.

JOAN: Yeah, but I think she has moved the needle, as Hillary did. I think it will be far more common, in the future, to have a woman on the ticket if the man is a candidate; that will not be as rare as it has been. And I think both Hillary and Sarah in particular, oddly enough, because she came out of nowhere, whereas we all knew Hillary. She wasn’t exactly the woman candidate. She was “Hillary Clinton.”

newsie, I don’t wear a hat, but if I did - my hat is off to you! You have shown immense determination to learn more about what you are doing, and enabled many of us to offer our little bit of help, or assistance where we can. Isn’t this REALLY what it means to be “community”? Isn’t this what we are all about here, on this site? Thanks for helping to show through a seemingly insignificant issue, when we work together, see what we can accomplish? I celebrate YOU! I celebrate US. Thanks.

That picture was taken about 10 years ago, and I no longer have the dog. She was a Whippet, Besenji mix. Strange as it sounds. She was as fast as the wind, and could spot, or smell most anything within several hundred yards. Her name was Sheba! She definitely was the queen, too. The little one walking toward us in the background was a Bejon. I name him Bejie. He looks like a cocker-poodle mix…

AMELIE, HI THERE YOU ARE A NEW ONE FOR ME. I DON’T DO THE HOROSCOPES AND I DON’T HAVE A PICTURE I USE A DESIGN THAT MY GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER MADE FOR ME. OUR WEATHER HERE IS CHILLING DOWN NOW ALL DAY IT HAS BEEN AN AWFUL AND GRAY DAY. IT IS RIGHT NOW 41 DEGREES. AND REALLY DAMP OUTDOORS. SO I GUESS I DON’T NEED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT RIGHT NOW. THANKS . WHY I DO NOT DO THE HOROSCOPES IS I HAD A SISTER YEARS BACK SHE HAS PASSED AWAY YEARS BACK AND SHE MISREAD A HOROSCOPE - SHE WAS AN EXCELLANT DRIVER . HER READINGS FOP RTHE DAY WERE DO NOT GO OUT TRAVELING YOU COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. SO SHE DID. SHE NEVER DROVE AGAIN . SHE NEEDED LEGS AND ARMS TO DRIVE. LATER ON SOMEONE TOOK THE PAPER TO HER THAT SHE HAD READ BECAUSE SHE CARRIED ON SOMUCH ABOUT IT. . SHE HAD READ A DIFFERENT ONE AND SURE ENOUGH WHEN WE PICKED UP THE PAPER AND WE READ IT AND SAW IT WE MADE HER THINK ON WHAT SHE HAD DONE. IN HER MIND SHE THOUGHT AN ACCIDENT COULD HAPPEN AND WOULD MOST LIKELY HAPPEN AND SHE CARRIED IT OUT. WELL, MOM GAVE US ALL A BIBLE AND HAD US ALL TO READ IT AND IT SAID DON’T READ THOSE THINGS. THAT IS BEING SOUPORSTITION. HOWEVER YOU SPELL THTA WORD. IT WAS NOT EVEN NECCESSARY FOR HER TO HAVE BEEN GOING THE WAY SHE DID WHERE THE MTS. WERE SO SHE WENT OUT OF HER WAY TO MAKE THE HOROSCOPE HAPPEN. BY SOEM MILES TOO. MOM SAID IT IS LIKE WHEN YOU THROW SALT OVER YOUR SHOULDER AND SEW ON SUNDAYS. ..HOW CAN THAT BE? ETC. WE WENT THRU THE PAPERS TO FIND EACH ONE OF OUR HOROSCOPES AND WE DID THAT FOR A WEEK. WE KEPT OLD NEWSPAPERS T START THE FIRE PLACE WITH WHEN WE WOULD BE IN THE FAMILY TIME. NOTHING LIKE WHAT THE THINGS WERE TELLING US WE WOULD BE DOING AND WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO US JUST SHOWED US HOW SILLY IT IS. PEOPLE STRETCH THEM OUT TO MENA SO MANY THIGNS THTA ARE NONSENSE.

I like your story Newzie. Thanks for that! Its a good lesson. You have run into me before. I posted the horoscope for the election day just for fun. You commented on it then. Some people believe it has some merit. Some think its heathen. Some don’t care. I like to read everything and then form my own opinion based on what I feel in my heart. It usually works! Its too bad your sister was so impacted by a simple horoscope. It is really really warm here in Vancouver. What a blessing because sometimes November is full of storms and more like in the 40’s too like where ever you are. I just thought you’d like to know that in that upper corner is where you go to change all the things you’d like to have on your WOW page. Hope the weather gets better for you! Best, Amelie

Both Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin helped women in politics, but in critically different ways. Clinton showed the American public what a woman of substance and formidable intelligence can accomplish. I think she’ll be one of our greatest political figures in the future. Palin was a bangle, hung on McCain’s wrist to give him and the campaign some glitz and glam. She was good at that - gutsy, showy, and totally lacking in content - brass, not sterling silver. Her brashness wasn’t enough to pull a flagging McCain campaign out of its ennui, but she gave it a go. Palin’s failure to realize her own ignorance and her own unpreparedness was embarrassing, and a little horrifying. Her contribution to women in politics is probably the message that any woman with good skin and decent features and a room temperature IQ can aspire to high office.

Mo, “Her contribution to women in politics is probably the message that any woman with good skin and decent features and a room temperature IQ can aspire to high office.” The Neiman Marxist also had $22K month makeup artist and $150K worth of clothes.

WW- you’re right. I should have said “with a little (expensive) help from her friends.” But you must admit, she has good bones.

Wow—this is harsh. I have to wonder if you would speak the same way about a candidate if she were one that were from your party. I don’t think Palin was perfect, but she is an accomplished young working woman. You may be right that she wasn’t ready, but Barack Obama was a few years older, with limited experience in federal government and few are “going on” about that.

Yea, Susan—many on this list eat their own gender. It gets pretty gross.

Star, It doesn’t matter how many times it gets said for you, does it? It has to do with similiar VALUES. Do you need the Goodyear Blimp to fly overhead with it flashing in neon lights to get it?? Palin is an idiot oaf. How much clearer does one need to be?? You are so sour, so bitter, that no fact about Obama matters. He won so get used to it.

Susan, She is a moron and I admire intelligence. She and Obama have NOTHING in common and if you think so, then you aren’t very bright. And I am not going to list the reasons, because as I said, I don’t like dumb people.
