Whoopi Goldberg Talks Exclusively to Liz Smith About Her New Children's Book

WHOOPI: It is hard because you have to sort of know a little bit about what will hold their attention. It depends on who you’re writing for.
LIZ: Yeah. You have to think about the age group that might be reading it. So this is for little girls, 7, 8, 10, 12?
WHOOPI: Yeah. To 12. And, you know, the last book was the Big Book of Manners, which was written for adults. I wrote it in a children’s form because I thought if adults read it to their kids, it might jar their memory of "please" and "thank you" and nobody wants to see you with your finger in your nose. You know, all those things that make me berserk.
LIZ: You know, we thought we already had an etiquette person on wOw in Judith Martin, but we have you as well.
| WHOOPI: It's funny because we wrote this before Barack was elected and we've got a child who's half and half. |
WHOOPI: But you see that it’s never in the book – that part of etiquette. That’s to say if you were driving down the street, you don’t want to look over and see something revolting, like people picking their nose. And you see it all the time.
LIZ: You don’t want to be offended by people you don’t even know.
WHOOPI: No. And can’t get to.
LIZ: Well, I love this book. It’s really cute. It’s just divine. It has a wonderful little message about how if you force yourself to do something you think you don’t want to do, then you suddenly find out you do want to do it.
WHOOPI: Yeah. And that you’re not half bad.
LIZ: I love the part in it that tells about how to twirl. Is that called finding the point?
WHOOPI: Yeah. Well it’s … you’re focusing – that you always come back to the focus point. It’s in the back of the book, where there are ballet terms.
LIZ: I should have looked it up.
WHOOPI: You know, the best thing about [the book] is that it doesn’t cost a lot. So girls can give it to their friends.
LIZ: And the illustrations …
WHOOPI: They’re wonderful.
LIZ: They’re great. They’re by Maryn Roos. Very good. Whoopi, the world loves you – little kids too.
