Whoopi Goldberg on 'The View': 'Somebody's Got to Put the Fire Out'

Whoopi’s mega star is burning ever brighter these days. ‘The View’ has the highest ratings since its inception 12 years ago. Liz Smith sits down with Whoopi to talk about it …

Editor’s Note: This is part two of Liz Smith’s exclusive interview with Whoopi Goldberg, where she talks about Elisabeth, Barbara and her own role on "The View." Click here to read the first part of this interview.

LIZ: Variety said recently that politics have really paid off with "The View." Do you agree? I mean, "The View" is the No. 1 program in key female demos for daytime — for the first time in the show’s history. And the show is 12 years old. So do you think politics paid off?

WHOOPI: My mother taught me that you can have the dialogue, disagree and move on.

WHOOPI: I’ll tell you what, I’ve no idea what our ratings are because I don’t care.

LIZ: You don’t care. Well I’m just telling you what Variety said. Are you amazed? Are you pleased?

WHOOPI: I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it. You know, I think more than anything the show is our joy.

LIZ: Well, I know you say you don’t care, but maybe you do …

WHOOPI: I mean, I watched "The View" occasionally. I’ve been on it occasionally. So, I didn’t know they didn’t talk about important stuff. I always thought that they did. But what I like more than anything is that it was the right time for me to be talking on television, at this point in the world. So for me, going on "The View" was perfect.

LIZ: Well, you also got a big rave from one of the columnists in Time about how the realistic exposure of your points of view helped the audience to understand. They said the viewer learns who has what ideology and so forth and can better understand the argument. I mean, this was an argument for opinionated television. And I see that Elisabeth Hasselbeck has transcended her minority conservative status and she’s become more feisty and outspoken than ever. And is this good?

To Whoopi, I hope that you will watch this. I have watched it for over a year and even though I try I still cannot sing along with it, I can only pray. Maybe you can use it on your show to let everyone know that this has been a problem for a long, long time. Shalom, Tina http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7zRtLptyc4

I have watched the show faithfully for 12 years and I agree with the many columnists, the show has changed dramatically. However there is one aspect about the show that I don’t like and that is the less than honest take on the relationship between the ladies at the table. I didn’t agree with a lot of things Rosie use to say on the show, but her assessment of Elisabeth was dead on. She came/comes across as a young woman that simply regurgitates opinions expressed to her by her husband and parents. Every political example she would offer us was a football analogy (her husband is a pro football player). Other ideas seem to come straight from her parents with a glint in her eye as if to say “look at me daddy, I’m tearing into these left wingers” None of her opinions or insights seem genuinely from her own core beliefs. And when Palin entered the picture….it was as if she lost her mind! You could see a physical change in how she spoke, attacked, pressed her opinions. The tears still came from time to time, but now she caught herself more quickly. It is clear Joy is super annoyed by her and she does not hide it. I’m sorry but I refuse to believe the disdain that Joy feels for her is eliminated once the director shouts “and we’re out!” and suddenly Joy and Elisabeth hug and make nice. I’m not buying it. I see Whoopi grow annoyed by Elisabeth, the rolling of the eyes, long sighs and banging on the table. True the topic changes and with it the mood at the table. But do the producers really believe the viewing audience believes that Whoopi and Elisabeth end the show with a vow to catch a movie and drink? I doubt it. But it’s the off chance that we will see real conversations taking place that will lead to debates that spill over and beyond the show and into the kitchens, offices and internet blog sites to carry on the debates. I agree that some of the show does come across as scripted. However I think it’s more so to fractionalize topics or guests to make sure the show runs smoothly. What happened in those fractions is where the controversy is. If I have your ear Whoopi, I would ask that you use your power to “keep it real” at all times, even when it includes issues about yourself. My example, for years we had to watch as the View panel spoke about Star Jones weight loss as if nothing had happened, when clearly the woman was dropping so much weight one would think she had a tape worm the size of Manhattan! Rosie was clearly coming unglued on film, her thought process and emotions were all over the place and yet Barbara spoke softly and acquiesced to anything she wanted. Free this and that for the audience….Yeah! Shows that cater to the needs of her life, crafts, kids, theater shows, gay & lesbian cruises, animals….While Barbara would roll her eyes. Even with you and your initial attempt to lose weigh and stop smoking. Pull the past tapes of the shows Whoopi, it’s written all over their faces, no one is buying it. Everytime you comment on the size of your butt and then follow it up with “I never eat….I am picky eater, I don’t eat food” Everyone rolls their eyes, I’m surprised you never noticed. I think it would make for great TV if the ladies of the View would be more like Joy Behar and just have it….say what is really on your minds and deal with the aftermath. It would make for great TV. I love you all, but the truth is each one of you says something in the course of the show that is so far out there that if you would each ease up on the cross talk and listen to what someone just said that was so far out there….we are talking Emmy time.

I would love to have an audio with this interview. Please wowowow…give us an audio if you can. I have followed the View since the beginning. There were times I let it go for a couple of months, but I always came back. I don’t remember any of the seasons as exciting as this one. My impression was that the political atmosphere was at a “revolutionary” high. I say Bravo to “The View” for being willing to talk about the issues that effect all of us. I know it brought you ratings….that’s business. You did well. You all did a great job in bringing important/contradictory thought into daytime TV during our very emotional election.

I guess the ratings are up for “The View” and that’s too bad. It’s such a contrived piece of fluff. It would only give EH credibility when she actually has none. I used to have a lot of respect for Whoopi but the recent promotion of Barbara Walters book as a Xmas gift made me gag. They really need to pull the plug on this stinker.

I can’t stand EH. Why they don’t remind her how completely wrong she was about defending Bush for years, every time she opens her mouth—is beyond me. EH got about 5 minutes in the other day on the subject of how she wonders what it means that Obama has commercialized the idea of the president- elect by having signs made that say ‘pres-elect’ on the podium when he speaks etc. Oh shut up, ding-bat. I’m sure the fat bald man that runs their show tells them not to run over EH & her conservative “thoughts”. I always wonder when watching their show—-why does some man run it? Why didn’t Barbara insist on a woman? This guy shapes the show. Why? Barbara & the rest have far more pull than he does. They ALWAYS put us under some man’s thumb on tv. Surely, there are women with his experience.

Putting Whoopi on the show was the best thing and I have watched the View from its first show. I love when everone gets fired up or are talking over each other how gently whoopi pulls it all back into place—she is a fair person and this is the right job for her!

Whoopi has added so much stability to the view, because she can be controversial, as she said above, “disagree and move on…” I admire Whoopi’s ability to get her point across without creating havoc. Although, I personally would not be able to hold my tongue as well as Whoopi when it comes to the Elizabeth factor. The part which really has ticked me off, is that Elizabeth has been allowed to throw her tantrums and everyone else has had to seemingly, hold back their own feelings when she does that. How much control does she have really? Too much Elizabeth, not enough Whoopi!

Addendum: Barbara Walters, no matter what anyone thinks of her, has really been a powerful pioneer for all women. She does deserve her accolades (sp?). Barbara will leave the view when she needs to. For the love of all things good and just, leave her alone. While, I also see her as missing some of the old punch and newness she once had, she is still a strong viable woman who has made the way for women in the media, most especially. She has been a pioneer for the journalism community for sure. Let us give her her just dues. Applaud and appreciate her for what and who she is and has been. Now, I do hope she will consider resigning her ‘seat’ on The View, but not her input. And just as a favor to so many of us, if she leaves The View, I hope and pray she will take Elizabeth with her!! PLEASE

Whoopie, Personally I loved the way you put out Ann Coulter’s fire. I could not believe her statements about 7% of the children of single parents and the problems caused, how could any author negate the 93%, that turn out just fine and call that research worth printing? My guess would be shortly her book with be in the bargain bin at Borders.

Good day Whoopi,I want to respond to somethings I felt were totally unnecessary with the interview of Gov. Blagojevich on Barbara Walters behalf of not having enuf class being a seasoned interviewer attacking the Gov.’s character/family without knowing the truth or allowing him to fully explain the situation and her ability to recklessly pass judgement. Calling the kettle BLACK tring to discredit and talk about the mans family, hell, she has the gaul to throw stones after her jungle fever trump with a black man, which did NOT have to come out,and why did she bring it up,to destroy that mans character too? Maybe she’s hurt/scorn because that black guy didn’t marry her..Give the Gov. a chance and lets hear the whole story,Thanks for reading Whoopi,LOVED you in the color purple and ghost..

I am a loyal watcher of The View only in the last couple years since retiring.  I never watched it before 2006 (I was always working).  I want to comment on Barbara Walters.  With all due respect for Barbara spends most of the time on The View interrupting Whoopi and always stating the obvious.  Her over-justification is tiring to say the least.  She really adds nothing to the show.  Who wants to be corrected all the time.  I keep watching it daily, due to the simple fact, I love Whoopi.  Now she says something!
