Whoopi: Why Isn't Anyone Screaming About Taxes?

© Shutterstock

WHOOPI: I am outraged. I’m outraged. I looked at my cable bill. I looked at my phone bill. And there are taxes on there … it goes anywhere from $10 to $15 a month that I’m paying for stuff I don’t know. There are letters — the LMNOPQ fund of the jacka-jacka … and no one says, “The what!?” And when you think about it, it’s every month that you’re paying it. So it’s ten bucks here or fifteen bucks here or twenty-five dollars there.

Then you’re writing out — they take the 50 percent of your income and it goes to God knows where. When I first started working I said, “OK. I don’t mind paying out because I know it’s going to go for some stuff I hate, and some stuff that I like.” But I’m looking and I see my friends who haven’t done as well as I have financially. You know, they’ve got kids, they’ve got house payments, they’ve got mortgages. They’ve got gas to put in their cars. Friends who are putting, you know, in a 500 gallon or 2500 gallon tank — they’re only taking 50 gallons of oil because they can’t afford it! They can’t afford it. I don’t understand why —

LIZ: Well, it’s pretty discouraging when Congress keeps doing these earmarks where they consign millions of dollars to stupid things like, you know, “We’ll study the button,” or “We’ll study ladybugs,” or something. Or they build these bridges to nowhere in Alaska. And then you do resent paying your taxes when that’s happening.

WHOOPI: I don’t mind paying them. I resent this idea that everything I do now is taxed. And I get no bang for my buck. I feel like I want to just dump tea in the river, because there’s no representation. And if I’m bitching about this, I can’t imagine what somebody who’s just living, literally, paycheck to paycheck is going through. Because there’s no government agency that says, “You know what? We’re going to pay this much to the oil company so that everybody can get the oil.”

LIZ: Well, I don’t believe we’re ever going to get rid of big taxes as long as America is in the industrial munitions manufacture business. And that’s the business the government is in — is constantly making these war machines and then they go obsolete and they junk billions of dollars worth of ‘em. And they just go on and on. And I don’t know. I know we have to protect ourselves, but —

WHOOPI: Here’s what started it, just so you guys know.

JOAN: Yes, let’s hear.

WHOOPI: I had a radio program, which did not work out. Very smartly, I was in a pay-or-play deal. So everybody said, “You know what? This isn’t working. But, yes, we know we still have to pay you.” They were supposed to give me my lump sum. Well it turns out that you can no longer be given a lump sum without 10 or 15 percent being taken out — as a penalty …

JOAN: As a penalty.

WHOOPI: … for getting paid a lump sum.

LIZ: Well, that makes no sense.

WHOOPI: It makes no sense. And what you have to do is you have to then defer the other half of your money. So you can take some now and then you can’t take it for another year.

LIZ: And then the company disappears and you never get it.

WHOOPI: Well, yeah. Or they go under. I said to the guy, “Who made this law? Did anybody put it on the books to discuss it?” No. This went into law about a year ago. If you’re getting ready to get paid a lump sum, you have a 20 percent tax on it — tax on top of the 50 percent they already took.

LESLEY: What always surprises me is when you see these people on Wall Street just cleaning up. Did you see the story the other day where these hedge fund owners — in this crisis and this recession that we’re in — in this Wall Street debacle, are making 3.5 billion dollars? And they’re the ones fighting taxes. They don’t —

JOAN: And they’re the ones that don’t pay the taxes!

Honestly this is a topic I feel so passionately about it’s difficult to discuss. I have four kids between the ages of 19 and 25. The oldest one bought a house at 19 years old with no money down and no job history! it was way more than she could handle and ended up getting foreclosed on. WHO loans a 19 year old kid with no job history, no credit and no down payment money to buy a house???!!! And you all know what a 19 year old is like… just TRY convincing them to NOT do something. All of my kids have been inundated with credit cards. all but one of them has got in over their heads with them. No amount of talking to them, begging them, pleading can beat out the lure of that credit card. And dammitt!! like it or not they are to young to know better! We don’t even let them drink legally until they are 21 and we’re inundating them with credit cards?? It’s indentured servitude! All of them but the oldest has figured out credit cards are evil. but it took them each the first couple years to figure it out and now they are digging out. I could stand at the top of a building and scream about this. I’ll be paying attention this year to the legislatures on this issue for sure!

Regarding the article on taxes. I think that people are screaming all across the country. Every day that they go to their mail box and find a bill from either the credit card co. the cable co. or any other company that is being allowed to add all kinds of charges, not only taxes, but FEE’S. When there not allowed to tax you they add FEE’S. It will take more than a democrat to fix the mess we’re in. It will only change when people stop electing the same people year after year. The problem is with the Insurance Co., the Oil Co., and the lobbists that represent them. We are no longer a country of the people by the people and for the people. The people are getting screwed. What needs to change is the way we vote. Stop electing people to 4 and 5 terms. We all keep screaming, but we also keep electing them. We need more reform than any one term Democrat can do. This we take yearsbut only if we stop electing the same good old boys to represent us.

The credit card companies know that the parents will pay the bills. It will also keep the credit card company rich!

Just finished reading this and thought I would say that I pay my taxes and I expect everyone to pay equally.. I own a small business, take what credits I am entitled to and write the checks at tax time. I have made some sacrifices for the current war type situation..but they are NOTHING compared to what was done during WWII..I often feel selfish and that I don’t do enough!! As for the credit crisis.. I think it shameful that we expect others to bail us out. Teach our youngsters that they must work for all they get and that cash in the bank is the ONLY way to live. Live simply Love fully .. V.

Advocacy group Consumers Union told the agencies that the proposals are a “strong beginning,” and supported steps such as restricting rate increases on existing balances for consumers who haven’t been more than 30 days late. “Penalty interest rates are unfair when applied retroactively,” according to Consumers Union. “The restriction on penalty rates as applied to existing balances is the heart of the proposed rule. This protection will do more than any other to return some balance and fairness to the credit-card marketplace.” The group added that agencies should go further than the current proposals, with moves such as: * Ending all retroactive interest-rate increases, including for consumers who have had a 30-day late payment * Limiting how high credit-card issuers can set “penalty” interest rates, and how long issuers can keep consumers at these rates * Prohibiting fees to pay a credit card by phone or Internet Card issuers balk Credit-card firms say restricting their ability to raise interest rates on existing balances would prevent them from adjusting the rate to reflect the higher risk of a consumer defaulting. According to public notes of a May meeting with Fed officials and representatives from the ABA, Capital One, Bank of America and Citibank, the industry believes allowing issuers to raise rates only on new transactions is insufficient because the “greatest risk is on funds already extended.” Further, industry groups said the proposal would lead issuers to raise rates and reduce the availability of credit for all consumers, rather than only for those who present the greatest default risk. “Rather than prohibiting rate increases on existing balances, the final rule should permit such increases if consumers also have the ability to opt out of the increase by closing the account,” according to the public notes. “If a rate increase accurately reflects the available market rates for that consumer, it is rational for a consumer to accept the increase and not opt out because, if they close that account, the consumer may not be able to get a lower rate with another card issuer.” There are also proposals on credit cards in Congress, including a Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights from Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., that has been approved in committee. That legislation aims to protect consumers against arbitrary interest-rate increases. Echoing concerns about the agencies’ proposals, industry participants have said Maloney’s bill could be overly restrictive and force rate increases across the board by limiting the ability of lenders to adjust interest for customers who become riskier. Please write your representatives to vote on these proposals.

Joan hit the nail on the head! ” it’s a complete lack of social conscience ” It is greed, pure and simple unadulterated greed that will be the downfall of this great nation. People don’t care about their neighbors the way they used to. Companies don’t care about their employees the way they used to. Politicians don’t care about Mr and Mrs John Q Public unless its an election year. It’s all about how much $ can I make and how fast can I make it. Who cares if thousands of people lose their jobs, my profit margin will go through the roof if I move production to Mexico (or Taiwan, India etc..) We the people don’t know how to get by with what we have because it is our inalienable right to have what our neighbors have whether we can afford it or not. Yes these are bad times and they are more than likely to get worse before they get better. I can only hope that we all can learn a lesson from all of our many mistakes and pull ourselves out of this economic funk before too many have lost too much.

Giving kids ,actually mine got those card requirement before they graduated High School is just another symptom of what the Government wants…We call it Government Cheese! In debt working just to pay minimum payments. So that you have to work for wages that just keep you a float to pay the bills. Look at all the adds to lend money. I remember when a loan was a rare thing, not the everyday norm. But people need to think…Why would it be so easy to obtain, why “GIFTS” and lures to borrow…Their is money to be made off of credit! BIG MONEY…We do need to get some basic values back…Do not be a borrower, live within your means, want more than save, work for it , strive to do better. Nothing is free but Unconditional Love. I have never had a credit card and I instilled that in my children. Yo! Who likes bills, the less bills, the less stress. Our schools should teach basic Living skills, such as what interest rates really mean. But frankly no more laws…People need to start thinking , not being Cheese that depend on adds on how to live…
