The wOw Women Weigh in on Sarah Palin, Republican Strategy and Slow Democratic Response

JONI: The election. There are so many angles here, I’m going to let you all decide which one you want to discuss. But here we are. I mean, at the end of the day the choice is really John McCain vs. Barack Obama. But, you wouldn’t think that today. You would think, well, all we’re doing is talking about Gov. Palin. And I guess every day talking about her is a bad thing for Obama, because we’re not talking about him. And another angle on all of this is about how the press has been so dismissive of her. And then yesterday you had Maureen Dowd completely turning around and saying she’ll probably be president in four years. So, the whole wrangle of vilification. Cynthia, since you’ve been to the Republican Convention, perhaps you’d like to start. Where are we on this election today?

CYNTHIA: There is no question Sarah Palin changed the conversation. And I think that’s exactly what John McCain hoped would happen. You know, we can debate her merits but, I mean, John McCain has achieved what he wanted politically, at least so far. Coming out of Denver and Obama’s Invesco speech, you know, the general feeling was "nothing can top that," and on Friday McCain did — by announcing Sarah Palin. And he and Palin have dominated the news cycle since. There’s still an awful lot we don’t know. And I’m not so sure that all of it, all of the vetting, has been terribly attractive. I think her daughter’s pregnancy – I’m not saying it’s off limits – but I don’t think it really matters very much and I don’t think the American people think it matters very much. And the sort of glee with which the mainstream media jumped on that seemed to me to be rather unattractive. Whether or not Sarah Palin is competent to be Commander in Chief has little to do with whether or not she is or she isn’t a good mother, which seemed to be what the debate was focusing on last week.

JOAN C: May I interject that I think it was focused as much on hypocrisy, Cynthia, as it was on anything else that she has – for purity balls and abstinence and all of that good stuff, and would not have sex education in schools and that’s why it was gleeful, I think, more than —

CYNTHIA: But you know, Joan, we like to gossip about it all. I just think that, you know, boy do we have more important things to worry about than whether or not her daughter’s pregnant.

JOAN C: But she uses her family politically a great deal in Alaska. There’s a very good piece – I think it’s in The Washington Post. They’ve done a lot of digging and her family is — her husband sits in on almost all the meetings in the governor’s office, and as her chief advisor; and sits in meetings with oil companies, even though he works for one, and advises her. And the children are everywhere. She takes them everywhere. And they’re very much part of the package. And so she’s in … that has invited some of this. But I’m telling you, it’s got to be news when someone brand new comes along to be one of the four major figures in the election and announces their teenage daughter is pregnant.

LESLEY: And not married.

JOAN C: And it was circulating on the Internet that her latest baby was really her daughter’s baby.

LESLEY: Can I step back for one second, step back about a mile, and just look at what’s happened from a distance because, Cynthia, I didn’t go to the convention so I was watching it, you know, at home. And what strikes me today is how brilliantly skillful the Republicans have been through all of this. They had no idea when they … when John McCain chose Sarah Palin at the very last second because he realized, or they forced on him that he couldn’t have his first pick, Joe Lieberman. When he picked Sarah Palin, and all these stories came up because she hadn’t been vetted very much, that they’ve handled all of this with just remarkable shrewdness and political genius because this really could have blown up in their faces.

McCain = Bush …. that is the only message that really needs to get out there. The economy is tanking, we’re in a quagmire in Iraq with our military suffering, vets have not been well taken care of, record numbers of home foreclosures since the Great Depression, unemployment the highest since 2005, the dollar has shrunk, middle class has less money and record lows in confidence in this country…. all this is a result of 8 years of Bush and not only has McCain voted 90% with Bush, he offers nothing different on any of the above issues. Yet McCain is trying to say he is going to reform Washington? He has been an integral part of the Bush years! Forget Palin, she is smoke and mirrors. McCain = Bush, McSame, McBush, THAT is the focus.

She burst onto the scene in a hail of glory! Her dress suit blowing in the whirl as her dancing feet scurry across the floor. Husband tall dark and handsome holding hands with five children in tow, a touching scene. They were more than they are in that scene. Something they wanted us to think until….The Lord slapped them back into reality. It always happens, we can’t say anything it seems anymore, if we stand for something we are made out to be liars. They tried to pull a Svengali on us. Shmoose us into a false sense of like. They Tried to make us think that this is how we should live. No! no, no, no, I want more rights, not less! I want birth control taught in the schools! We forgot about all the young girls pregnant last year? People need to see what she wants to push on us. We need choice, not domination. She is showing us that we should have no brain, just have the kids, and keep having kids no matter what, don’t prevent it, no thats a sin, have it, and just keep having kids? Okay, don’t push that on me and my granddaughters. I want them to have a life before they have a twenty year responsibility. Which can become someone elseses responsibility when you have kids young. So She said she would help her daughter, so does that mean she will be taking care of six children? So, she was humbled, and really it is not a big deal unless She is against birth control? Then that puts the wrong message out. If she loves her people like Jesus did, then she would want to prevent disease, and that also has to do with Stem Cells? Which she is against. No one is talking about how perfect they look too. Like movie stars! by shoving her up out in front of us like that they hope to sway us. ’ And who are these white women that will just sway their vote over hoopla! Not even knowing that she is against women’s rights. If I had five kids I would want to stay home, be stress free, and secure. I cannot even imagine being a person like her. I do not identify.

These women fell in love with the idea of “Sarah Palin”, and then went back to watching “America’s Got Talent.” They are not reading this, or question what they have been told. They will believe what they want to believe. It’s over.

Atta girl, Don’t forget that she: 1 - Never wanted the bridge to nowhere 2 - Never said that Hillary was whining about sexism in the media and their coverage of her, and that it hurt women 3 - Never ran Ted Stevens 527, which is now the subject of a corruption investigation/trial 4 – Never charged the state per diem for her and her family, to sleep in their own home 5 – Never lied about selling the state jet for a profit and on EBay 6 – She is not backed by Big Oil (Because they know she wants to “reform” them) 7 – She does not believe that Intelligent Design should be taught in schools along side evolution so kids can decide for themselves which idea is cooler 8 – Does recognize that Polar Bears are our greatest threat and has plans on dealing with those pests 9 – There is no ethics investigation about her abuse of power 10 – She DID NOT praise her daughter for her “decision” to keep her unborn baby, while at the same time wanting to deprive other women of the same set of options And this is all you need to know Sibelle

I see what you are all saying, but we haven’t factored in the problems that McCain is still dealing with, and it is definitely more than just the Democrats! He’s having to smooth over problems with many factors in his own party. Sarah Palin did not solve all the problems with the religious right by any means either. Are the Democrats simply watching to see if the Republicans will destroy themselves over this and other issues - kind of “wait and see” attitude?

I think we’ve all spent way too much energy on her already. She is doing exactly what the neocons wanted - take the focus off McCain. Forget her. I’ve posted my last post about Palin. She’s not worth my time, or my vote.

Hi Lorraine — I respect your decision not to post anything further about Palin. I agree that we are spending far too much time and energy on her, and need to get back on track. The problem is the Media, which Needs “Controversy,” and fresh issues/topics, etcetera, to generate readers/viewers, whatever. Take this website …day after day after day, we get a lot of topics about Sarah P … why? Well, she is news, but that is partially because the news industry/media keeps putting her “out there” in the public eye, and soon it’s All Sarah, All the Time! WOW needs viewers to log on and give them a certain number of hits, and so there’s a constant need to come up with “copy,” and right now, Palin fits the bill. And most of it is non-substantive, and I have been taking the bait too, because I seek a forum where I can discuss whether Palin is competent to be Commander in Chief. But that question can be answered in one word — NO! So in place of substance we get these fluff pieces, such as whether she is being treated fairly, and the evolution of her fashion sense, and blah, blah, blah. Well, no one is forcing me to log on, and I have been enjoying it, but the truth is that I would also enjoy a good discussion on the real issues!!! The bottom line is that at least 80% of the stuff out there exists only because of this voracious need of the web/media market for content, content, content.

WoW! I feel for Hillary, what a tough place to be in. However, as the woman I think she wants us to know her to be; she will set the record straight, she will make sure that people know that these two women are polar opposites. Hillary Clinton cares far to deeply that the White House is out of the hands of The Republicans. You see when “push comes to shove”, you will fight for what you are passionate about. And frankly, who better…I would think she is as applaud of the mere idea of Palin in office . Equality means in the Political ring, even women better be able to stand up and fight, Something I believe Hillary has mentioned once or twice… Smiles Hugs and Blessings, LOve Jen… “We Don’t Have To Think Alike, To Love Alike” ~Socrates

Jennifer…. And how’d that philosophy work for Socrates? “Love with discretion or you may feel like drinking the hemlock, too.” -Suzanne de Cornelia 9/908 9:47P PST

Suzanne, The Quote from Socrates does not refer to the Who we love. Rather that we can have individual differences and still be able to respect and care for another, whom we do not always see eye to eye with. The Suicide of Socrates… On a day in 399 BC the philosopher Socrates stood before a jury of 500 of his fellow Athenians accused of “refusing to recognize the gods recognized by the state” and “of corrupting the youth.” If found guilty; his penalty could be death. The trial took place in the heart of the city, the jurors seated on wooden benches surrounded by a crowd of spectators. Socrates’ accusers (three Athenian citizens) were allotted three hours to present their case, after which, the philosopher would have three hours to defend himself. After hearing the arguments of both Socrates and his accusers, the jury was asked to vote on his guilt. Under Athenian law the jurors did not deliberate the point. Instead, each juror registered his judgment by placing a small disk into an urn marked either “guilty” or “not guilty.” Socrates was found guilty by a vote of 280 to 220. The jurors were next asked to determine Socrates’ penalty. His accusers argued for the death penalty. Socrates was given the opportunity to suggest his own punishment and could probably have avoided death by recommending exile. Instead, the philosopher initially offered the sarcastic recommendation that he be rewarded for his actions. When pressed for a realistic punishment, he proposed that he be fined a modest sum of money. Faced with the two choices, the jury selected death for Socrates. The philosopher was taken to the near-by jail where his sentence would be carried out. Athenian law prescribed death by drinking a cup of poison hemlock. Socrates would be his own executioner. He was seventy years old…Seem that he too had a real problem with lack of… Separation of Church and State.

Jennifer, I was kind of half kidding….but thanks for this because I also half remembered the story. How could the Athenians be so dumb…sad…we haven’t grown much.

Hello Suzanne, I found the need to bone up on the Athenians and how their Democracy has played a role in why the Forefathers choose to be a Republic…Along with , Why they choose to stress the need for separation of Church and State. Your posts really help me grow, to expand my concepts.Thank You and Please keep posting. I know it is hard not to get Dizzy about the current election, but your input really helps.
