Julia Reed: A Wedding to Remember (Photos)
wOw's Julia Reed remembers her wedding day ... and the people that made it special.

All these photos were taken six years ago at John’s and my wedding. I canceled a wedding when I was 29 at which I was to have seven bridesmaids wearing pale green. I am so lucky to still have the same close friends (most of us have been friends since childhood), but since I was 42 when I finally did tie the knot (and since I was wearing pale green myself), I couldn’t quite bear the thought of a procession that would have looked a lot like a Mrs. America pageant. So I made the rule that no bridesmaid could be over 12 years old or five feet tall. I was half joking but I loved the idea of having all the young girls I love the most as members of the wedding party – and I knew they’d look a hell of a lot better in matching dresses!
The first picture was at our rehearsal dinner and those two precious people are my godchild Maisie McInerney, on the left, and my first cousin’s daughter, Zara Corzine, on the right. Zara was exactly like me at that age and didn’t want to miss a thing so she shadowed me all night – my favorite picture, which I can’t put my hands on, features her standing directly behind John and me, watching our reactions as we sat and listened to all the toasts.

There Zara is again lifting up my skirt to get a better view of my petticoat and my Manolos, while my beloved friend from England (and one of the most talented writers I know), Vicki Woods, looks on.

Finally, there are all the girls with John and me on my parents’ front lawn in Mississippi right after the ceremony. They are, from left, my niece Evans Reed, Maisie, and Zara, and then, standing next to John, is my niece Brooks, Evans’s big sister and my maid of honor. Now they are all grown up and even more beautiful and poised. Brooks, the oldest of the bunch, has grown way beyond five feet (she was then too, actually). Now she’s almost six feet and a total show-stopper. She just graduated from high school in the cold north (Minnesota) and can’t wait to begin freshman year at the University of Mississippi.
By the way, Carolina Herrera designed my gorgeous green dress after a summit meeting attended by my good friend Andre Leon Talley and the very talented Herve Pierre who works with Carolina. I was just a spectator, believe me, but when Carolina started sketching the girls’ dresses complete with “fichus” (who knew?) at the neckline and that beautiful green Brunschwig and Fils fabric, I was more excited than I was about my own dress. The sweet and generous John Barrett (of the eponymous salon on top of Bergdorf’s) did their loose hair and they could not have been more beautiful. I am blessed to have all four in my life.
