Julia Reed's Clint Eastwood Face and Dolly Parton Thighs

Julia Reed
I love all the great lines from "Gone With the Wind." I went to see that movie with my grandmother at the Belle Meade Theater in Nashville when I was eight, and thereafter whenever I got a tad out of hand, she’d call me Scarlett — which, unbeknownst to her, I took as a great compliment. I also love all those great Humphrey Bogart lines from "Casablanca" and the Lauren Bacall lines from "To Have and Have Not," but I am far too self-conscious to actually utter them. I do, however, put on Clint Eastwood’s "Go ahead, make my day" face whenever someone is trying to take the empty seat next to me — or when they, having taken it anyway, attempt to engage me in conversation. There’s also the classic line from my brilliant friend Bobby Harling’s "Steel Magnolias," uttered by Truvy (Dolly Parton in the movie): "These thighs haven’t gone out of the house without Lycra on them since I was 14." I may not say it, but I (should) live it!

My favorite line from "Steel Magnolias" (uttered by Shirley MacLaine): "You are too twisted for color TV!"

I’m not even sure what that means, but it makes me laugh.
