Liz Smith: Stars Bloom in June! Debbie Harry, Debbie Reynolds and Carroll Baker

Hot women, hot drag queens and once-hot British prime ministers liven up the month of June

At L.A.’s famous Book Soup, a party was underway celebrating Anna David’s hot novel of prostitution, Bought. Suddenly the reality star of “Cathouse,” Brooke Taylor (a real-life hooker), announced that any of her “clients” will get double the amount of time with her at the notorious Bunny Ranch in Nevada – if they come in with a copy of the book!

The author was thrilled at the endorsement. After all, Brooke is no ordinary lady of the night. She is considered “the world’s most famous and popular prostitute,” profiled in respectable magazines such as Marie Claire. Brooke said Bought has “brilliantly captured a side of the industry many people have trouble grasping.” And that wasn’t a double entendre. Brooke is a straightforward kinda gal.

Listen, it’s a new world folks, and if you’re gonna be a bear, be a grizzly.

I always liked Carroll Baker…Harlow was my most favorite.  And of course Debbie Reynolds will live on in my heart as the infamous Tammy and the Bachelor….but I only saw that and her other movies in reruns.

Off to buy Vanity Fair with the divine Johnny Depp.  He gets better with age as his love and zest for life are reflected in his beautiful eyes.  When he was younger he was almost too pretty but he has certainly improved with time like a very fine wine.

He really does get better with age, doesn’t he?  Must find Vanity Fair.

I loved thumb sucking, cradle curled Carroll Baker and the rest of the cast of Baby Doll. That was the movie that got me starting counting how often Cocal Cola turns up in Tennessee Williams’ work.  Dipsy Aunt Rose Comfort.  Rip Torn saying, "It’s tahpin."  Archie Lee and the promised five rooms of "fuhnatchur."

….and Carroll Baker shimmying off a French chandelier in The Carpetbaggers.

She’s left some great imagery on film.

Thanks for reminding me how old I am…I also hate the cover of Esquire…I like to be able to quick peruse what’s inside and frustrated by the “artsy” statement.
