Liz Smith: Peggy Siegal's Business Tips

And more from Our Gossip Girl: Kathleen Turner takes Molly Ivins to the stage … And Michigan is moving on up.

"IT IS a curious fact that major new steps in evolution weren’t usually taken by the most advanced members of a class of animals, but by one of the more primitive and simple members of the class. The explanation for this seeming paradox is clear at once if the word ‘primitive’ is taken to mean unspecialized, not committed to narrow behavior patterns," to quote Susumu Ohno.

I KNOW, I KNOW that frequently I am busy here mentioning our fascinating friend, the uber-press agent, Peggy Siegal. Years ago when I first met Peggy she seemed intent on finding a guy. She was forever talking to me about how I should introduce her to "Mr. Right," as if I had a large collection of these ready to hand out.

Now, as you know if you’ve been paying attention here, Ms. Peggy has become well known as she has successfully concentrated on her brilliant career, arranging social parties and pushing movie openings, influencing the Oscars, covering the Cannes Film Festival and so forth. She now knows more famous people than anyone I know and that includes me.

***

IF YOU look at Avenue magazine for March, Peggy has penned a delightful article on the filming of "Wall Street 2," telling how she turned many would-be socialites into movie extras for director Oliver Stone.

But here is the best part. Peggy just takes off for exotic climes whenever she feels like it and she is often busy jetting around the world with her niece Mattie Siegal. So now she has sent a set of the most beautiful and delightful photographs, which she had taken (or which she starred in) on the Mathews Range of Northern Kenya last Christmas.

To make these more fun, Peggy has written the identifications of these photos, calling it "Six Business Tips I Learned in Africa."

Click here to see Peggy’s pictures and to read the business tips she learned in Africa.

So study them and take note. And be brave like Peggy. Remake your own life. Travel. Seek adventure. Make it happen. Be your own Mr. Right!

LET’S SEE, who is the modern Texas woman who made quite an impact on history and politics? No, for a change, I’m not talking about the late Ann Richards, but about one of Ann’s most admired friends, the late gadfly journalist Molly Ivins.

And the great Tony-winning actress Kathleen Turner will be playing Molly in a one-person show that is about to go into rehearsal February 23 in New York. The director is David Esbjornson.

Journalists Margaret and Allison Engel have written the play titled "Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass Wit of Molly Ivins." It opens in Philly on March 19 to April 18 at the Philadelphia Theater Company. With good reviews, it will doubtless come to Broadway and then go all over the country.

I always loved Molly Ivins, especially after she lost her job at The New York Times because she used the expression "chicken pluckers." I had the privilege about a year or so ago of recording Molly’s very last book, the one titled Bill of Wrongs. This was published and made ready for listening after Molly died of breast cancer back in January 2007.

Molly Ivins, I have followed her writing for years, Shrub was hilarious. Texas Monthly has some excellent articles and interviews with Molly.  Liz, you have made my day, somehow I have to see the play.  With all her wit, intelligence and humor, I wonder how she would see Texas politics today? Kaye Bailey stepping down from congress to run against Perry in the Republican Primary for Governor! woo hoo! I have my eye on Cornyn. When Clayton Williams ran for Governor she had me laughing out loud, by myself, with tears in my eyes. She lived in politically correct South Austin and officed on 7th and Nueces…my old stomping ground.  I haven’t read/heard Bill of Wrongs but I can ‘remedy that real quick’ with an order to Amazon. I have this weird thing about Texas, being a native, that I or another native can make fun of Texas all day long but if an ‘outsider’ does then I can get fightn mad!  Loyalty? Larry McMurtry has that same side splitting effect on me.  Texasville and The Last Picture Show are two one favorites of his.  One of my dear friends grew up in Archer City, the setting of The Last Picture Showand that is one of his claims to fame!  My sister-in-law is Larry’s cousin, not to be name dropping for crying out loud!

I could never get enough of Molly Ivan’s wonderfully funny assessment of the seriously flawed political players of the day. I miss her humor and her insight into the making and unmaking of the political fiber of Texas, our Texas.

Thanks for the Michigan shout out Liz!! Our new film industry is a bright spot on our rather bleak employment situation.  And George—anytime you are in Michigan feel free to stop by for a nice home-cooked meal!!

I so miss Molly Ivans. I looked forward to her columns, as she had such a way with words and was always right on in whatever she wrote about. I would love to see Kathleen Turner doing her one woman show on her. It should be priceless and funny too, as she was always funny when she was writing about serious things.

I too miss Molly Ivins great wit.  Kathleen Turner is a great choice - I hopoe the show is a success.

Side note: if only Ann Richards had not let Shrub dictate their race for the governorship we would have been spared his presidency.

Molly Ivins rocked! I loved her comments on Dubya back in the day! Her voice is seriously missed in these times and could only imagine what she would have said about everyone’s favorite political media whore, Sarah Palin!

I hope the show comes to the left coast sometime soon too!

Liz,

There are so many more jobs than auto jobs lost here.  We aren’t in a recession - we’re in a Depression!  We’re hoping that the movie industry will help but we need so much more than that in jobs.  Half the state has Cobra health insurance that is going to run out!

I was in Michigan recently, Mackinac Island area, and the whole area is beautiful. I know mobsters made their home there. The homes survive. I don’t know who owns the homes now, but they are absolutely picturesque. Beautiful movies could be made there. It’s not just about cars.

The article about Wall Street is really interesting but it has a spoiler. It doesn’t give away the end or anything but if you are looking forward to seeing the movie don’t read it. Too bad. It was a fun piece.
