Sister Schubert’s rolls are the best I’ve ever had, both store-bought or homemade.  I discovered them a few years ago when I was told at the last minute to bring the rolls to a thanksgiving gathering.  My usual frozen rolls were sold out, so I bought several pans of SS’s.  Everyone at the gathering was raving about the rolls.

First of all, just let me say how much I’ve enjoyed all the interviews in this series. This one in particular struck a nerve with me. Because of my personal situation, I’m not able to work at what I actually studied and, let’s just say, things can get precarious. In the beginning, this bothered me, but more and more, I’ve come to see it as an opportunity to pursue interests and hopefully turn hobbies into (very enjoyable) work. I’ve cooked since I was a little girl simply because I like to, but when I separated, I sort of took refuge in the kitchen making nurturing meals for my son and me. And, yes, I bake the bread we eat. In fact, one of my favorite go-to light suppers is what I call the “peasant meal.” I haul out the homemade bread, the olive oil, the cheese, pour myself a glass of Priorat wine (the region is right next to where I live and it produces really bold, earthy wines), and finish off with fresh fruit. If all goes as planned (please go as planned!), the Spanish cookbook I’ve written will be published this fall and I’m currently finishing up a Catalan one that I hope to publish too. I’ve spent 2 years working on it, going back and forth between the kitchen, my computer, the library, and making “field trips.” Yesterday, I roamed the old quarter of the city where I live, camera in hand (and son too), taking pictures and then we stopped off for lunch in a restaurant we found there. There is something so basic in good food that’s been lovingly prepared. I’m convinced it nurtures not just the body, but the soul as well. And how fabulous to be able to make a living sharing that with other people.
