'60 Minutes' Creator Don Hewitt Should Expect Full Recovery From Pancreatic Cancer Surgery

Don Hewitt/Flickr.com

Flash! wOw made news recently revealing that Don Hewitt, the creator of CBS’s "60Minutes," had pancreatic cancer. I am so happy to report that Don had a successful operation on March 31 and they removed the tumor on his pancreas. It was contained and the Mighty Man of Television, a guy who is in a class by himself, now has a very good chance for a full recovery. We wish him and his devoted wife, Marilyn Berger Hewitt, all the luck in the world. Hey, Donnie boy, the Candy Kitchen in Bridgehampton is awaiting your return.

A lawyer friend recovered from pancreatic cancer…..a very good thing for him to do would be to drink lots of Dr Oz’s Green Drink or fresh Wheat Grass everyday:

Dr. Oz Green Drink Recipe
  • 2 apples, cored
  • 2 big handfuls of spinach
  • 1/2 cup of chopped parsley
  • 1 celery stick, chopped
  • 1 thumbnail length of ginger root, peeled
  • 1 lemon - juice only (use peel slice for zest)
  • 1 medium cucumber

Place ingredients in a blender, add 4 oz. spring water or a handful of ice cubes, then puree quickly for one minute. Makes two glasses of Dr. Oz’s green drink.

The green drink has a strong taste and if you are used to drinking soda or sweet tea, the taste will take some getting used to. Dr. Oz suggests adding other items at first to sweeten the green drink to your taste.

Green drink - Optional ingredients:

  • 2nd cucumber
  • raw carrot
  • unsweetened fruit juice
  • banana

What a relief. So often it’s the death nell. I’ve had 2 friends taken by pancreatic cancer.  Good wishes for him and his family!

Why is the beginning of 60 Minutes like an Irish mother?

They both go, "tch, tch, tch, tch!"

Yay! My mother died of pancreatic cancer just 20 years ago, a month after being diagnosed. Progress is being made!

I so hope that progress is being made. You and your mother walked a lonely road. Let’s make that road less lonely and more hopeful and support PanCan. My best to you!

Thank you. I’ve volunteered to take part in the Johns Hopkins study of families with pancreatic cancer in them. Oddly, my mother had none of the usual risk factors.

No one gets out of here alive, I guess the message of my mother’s story would be.

Thanks for your note.

I agree with you, Patricia. Those two deserve a medal for survival. Lets keep Both Mr Hewitt and Justice Ginsburg in our thoughts and prayers that this is will pass and they will live on never to have "it" come back.

Beth, What can we do to distroy this cancer? Or any cancer? "It" has got to be defeated What are you thoughts?

I believe we need more scientific medical research to combat this. More money to do it with also.

The internet site for Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer is helpful. One thing I try to stress to anyone who will listen to me is that, although type 2 Diabetes is rampant, if you are diagnosed and have no conditions which cause this, get a pancreatic scan!!! My husband lead a healthy lifestyle, not overweight, good diet and no family history, but he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes one year before the PC diagnosis. His GP felt so horrible in missing this clue, but as she said, insurance companies won’t pay for the scans, etc. Just being able to get the proper testing might save some victims. Let’s work together!!!!
