What Is It About Adam Lambert? by Allegra Huston

The author of Love Child reflects on the panty-throwing days of yesteryear … and on the latest inspiration for the flinging of undergarments from ‘American Idol.’

Editor’s Note: Allegra Huston’s new book, Love Child: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found, hit bookstores in April and has received rave reviews from Melik Kaylan at Forbes, the Daily Telegraph and wOw’s own Liz Smith, among others. Allegra is the youngest daughter of film director John Huston and sister of Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston. She was born in London, raised in Ireland and Los Angeles, and now lives in Taos, NM. She was a publisher in London for nine years and has been a freelance writer and editor since 1994.

In the early ’80s, I moved to London and discovered that housewives were throwing their panties at Freddie Mercury. I found it baffling. Tom Jones I could understand, though I didn’t buy into it; but Freddie Mercury was so obviously gay. These 40-something women in polyester dresses and perma-set hair were making idiots of themselves on the BBC, as if they didn’t understand what gay was.

I haven’t had a crush on a famous person since my yearning, aged 14, for John Travolta to rescue me from the mountaintop house ...

Could they really not know? I was only 16, but I knew perfectly well – maybe it was because I came from Los Angeles. I’d gone to Frederick’s of Hollywood with my stepmother to buy pink ostrich-feather mules in a size 13 for her friend Philip, to assist in his transformation into Marcia Hardridge.

And now I’m in my 40s, and, if I were the panty-throwing type, I’d want to throw mine at Adam Lambert. What has happened to me?

I’ve never liked the front-combed hair-in-the-face look. I don’t know that I’d actually vote for the black nail polish. And I’m a bit worried that he’s got some ghastly secret piercings. To be honest, I’m not really sure I want to find out. But there’s something about him that keeps me — and half the women I know — replaying old "American Idol" episodes on DVR and gazing at photographs of his blue-penciled eyes. (Let’s not forget that Brando did eyeliner too.) Bravery, maybe — he hooked me with “Ring of Fire.” The damn-the-torpedoes flamboyance, the oh-my-god-what-did-I-just-do look when he finished. The intense self-discipline obvious behind the recklessness. And the sweetness. And the smile.

Frankly, I don’t mind whether he’s kissing a guy or a girl in that photo with the overcoat and scarf and purple hair held back by sunglasses; it’s a very sexy photograph. I wouldn’t want to print it out if he was kissing a girl. I’d be jealous of her. A guy, I can’t compete with.

I’m thinking it may be better to have a crush on a gay man. I haven’t had a crush on a famous person since my yearning, aged 14, for John Travolta to rescue me from the mountaintop house that, behind my grandmother’s back, we called Gloom Castle. I felt like an idiot then, and I’d feel like one now if I was mooning around over photos of Johnny Depp or Denzel Washington and wondering whether, if we were stuck in an elevator together, they just might be up for it. Of course, they’re more my age. I was at university listening to the original “Mad World” when Adam Lambert was born.

He’s utterly unattainable. So what am I thinking? This way, I can really laugh at myself. I’m not like those Freddie Mercury housewives; I know the score. This is not a sad obsession. I’m hoping it might be chic.

"What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?" Seduce Adam Lambert, Obviously

You know, I never made the connection before. I remember the excitement of the Beatles and part of it was because we had just experienced the assassination of JFK and had a psychic yearning for positive feelings, and there they were. Now 40 years later, after coming off the morose negativity of the Bush years we have TWO figures to lift us up - Obama with his intelligence and coolness and Adam lambert with his heat and sensuality … men for the time !

Sisters! I am glad that I am not the only one! I almost thought that I need to see a shrink for this Adam OCD.  I have to listen to his music for my work out and before I go to bed.  He is just so wonderful inside and outside.  I wish him all the luck and cannot wait for his solo CD!

I also am an obsessed 50-something who cannot get enough of Adam. I read everything I can find about him and his appeal seems to be predominantly with middle age women.  I also have been wondering why and I think I have some insight.  Even though Adam considers himself a rebel with a smile, he really doesn’t seem that rebellous to those of us who came through the 60’s.  The rebels of our youth seemed to do everything they could to be unattractive, grungy, dirty and disrespectful.  Along comes Adam who is gorgeous, talented, articulate, intelligent, respectful, emotionally generous, clean and funny who just wants to entertain and look good doing it.  I had enough of the grungy "stars" of my youth back then. (Paul McCartney and Davey Jones excepted).  I’m looking forward to all the Adam I can find for a long time.  By the way, I think we need a new acronym to label us.  How about "HETBERT" - Heterosexual females in love with Adam Lambert.  What ‘cha think?

Hi Allison

I’ve been on a few fansites and I dont think its just middle aged women - loasd of younger people and interestingly enough men (less vocal about it - but one really interesting article by a straight man a little flummoxed that he felt attracted to adam!),  But whats interesting is how many older people are attracted!

I think though that older people - many of them have deepened and have a real sensitivity to radiance and presence in human beings - so perhaps thats another reason why he’s bowling over older ones!

I will have to say I was HOOKED the first time I saw him. I am 55 years old and have, by my husbands words, an obsession with Adam Lambert.

How can you not listen his vocals and stage presence and not fall in LOVE with him.

His sexual identity is the furthest thing from my mind. I want all of him…his personality, his vocals, his theatrics, and his kindness. I like the fact that he really doesn’t care what people think about…ie….the CLAY slamming of Adam.

I am impatiently waiting for his first C.D. and am on the Internet everyday looking for info. on this great young man.

Thank goodness it’s not just me!  I am totally obsessed & addicted to Adam Lambert & just can’t get enough of him!  I watch his videos & interviews over & over again—-that’s my daily fix! I don’t know what it is about him.  I am in awe of his talent, his looks, his style…& after AI was over, I was drawn in more, watching how great his attitude & disposition was.  He is a kind, gracious & warm-hearted person who’s articulate, intelligent & well-spoken. I enjoy watching him all the time! I am in my 40’s, happily married & have an 18-year old son.

Oh, & as an addendum…I don’t care about his sexual preference or orientation.  I’m not interested in him that way.  I just enjoy his whole persona, the entire Adam Lambert package!  He is the best thing that happened to AI, the best thing has come along in a long time!

I, too, am a fan of Mr. Adam Lambert, and I, too am an older woman of 62 years old. I am very taken with Adam, and my kids worry I may be a bit unstable in my adoration of this young man. I think they may even be a bit jealous. I enjoy watching him perform, and I love listening to his music on his studio performances. I think he has a lot of soul, and he gives me something to be excited about. It’s like cause and effect, you want to feel better, look better, and feel alive. The attraction is magnetic, and I’ve been drawn in, and I apologize to no one for it.

I thank AI, and my daughter for introducing this young man to me. Rock on, Adam, see you on the tour when it comes to Boston.

I am with all the mature women who are entranced by Adam Lambert. I keep thinking I am acting like a child as I go to the internet and look for the latest news about him. For some reason, I feel like I know him. He is the boy with whom my daughter sang Broadway tunes or went to Hot Topic and bought the latest bondage pants. He makes me feel good about me, that I get it, that there are somethings that years do not change.

Oh my God, I am so glad to hear it’s not just me. I am 43 and not into black nail polish and glam rock, but Adam… Oh My God, he is incredibly sexy. For me, it’s the sweetness and the confidence and the eyes. He is soooo beautiful inside and out. And what a voice. Oh my, he is yummy!!! I wish him much happiness and success, always.

Oh, was I happy to read Allegra’s comments.

I was beginning to wonder about my sanity.

At 77 I was waiting for Tuesday’s to see what Adam was going to sing. I just could not have enough of that face, the singing, the sexuality, the whole package.

This is the most talented guy they ever had on that stage.

I can’t wait for his music to be sold to us.

No matter about who won, he is the only winner from day one in that show.

Let me see when was the last time I went gaga like this? Elvis did it, Mercury did it and now Adam. Guess I am not totally dead yet.
