What Is It About Adam Lambert? by Allegra Huston

Editor’s Note: Allegra Huston’s new book, Love Child: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found, hit bookstores in April and has received rave reviews from Melik Kaylan at Forbes, the Daily Telegraph and wOw’s own Liz Smith, among others. Allegra is the youngest daughter of film director John Huston and sister of Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston. She was born in London, raised in Ireland and Los Angeles, and now lives in Taos, NM. She was a publisher in London for nine years and has been a freelance writer and editor since 1994.
In the early ’80s, I moved to London and discovered that housewives were throwing their panties at Freddie Mercury. I found it baffling. Tom Jones I could understand, though I didn’t buy into it; but Freddie Mercury was so obviously gay. These 40-something women in polyester dresses and perma-set hair were making idiots of themselves on the BBC, as if they didn’t understand what gay was.
| I haven’t had a crush on a famous person since my yearning, aged 14, for John Travolta to rescue me from the mountaintop house ... |
Could they really not know? I was only 16, but I knew perfectly well – maybe it was because I came from Los Angeles. I’d gone to Frederick’s of Hollywood with my stepmother to buy pink ostrich-feather mules in a size 13 for her friend Philip, to assist in his transformation into Marcia Hardridge.
And now I’m in my 40s, and, if I were the panty-throwing type, I’d want to throw mine at Adam Lambert. What has happened to me?
I’ve never liked the front-combed hair-in-the-face look. I don’t know that I’d actually vote for the black nail polish. And I’m a bit worried that he’s got some ghastly secret piercings. To be honest, I’m not really sure I want to find out. But there’s something about him that keeps me — and half the women I know — replaying old "American Idol" episodes on DVR and gazing at photographs of his blue-penciled eyes. (Let’s not forget that Brando did eyeliner too.) Bravery, maybe — he hooked me with “Ring of Fire.” The damn-the-torpedoes flamboyance, the oh-my-god-what-did-I-just-do look when he finished. The intense self-discipline obvious behind the recklessness. And the sweetness. And the smile.
Frankly, I don’t mind whether he’s kissing a guy or a girl in that photo with the overcoat and scarf and purple hair held back by sunglasses; it’s a very sexy photograph. I wouldn’t want to print it out if he was kissing a girl. I’d be jealous of her. A guy, I can’t compete with.
I’m thinking it may be better to have a crush on a gay man. I haven’t had a crush on a famous person since my yearning, aged 14, for John Travolta to rescue me from the mountaintop house that, behind my grandmother’s back, we called Gloom Castle. I felt like an idiot then, and I’d feel like one now if I was mooning around over photos of Johnny Depp or Denzel Washington and wondering whether, if we were stuck in an elevator together, they just might be up for it. Of course, they’re more my age. I was at university listening to the original “Mad World” when Adam Lambert was born.
He’s utterly unattainable. So what am I thinking? This way, I can really laugh at myself. I’m not like those Freddie Mercury housewives; I know the score. This is not a sad obsession. I’m hoping it might be chic.
More From Allegra Huston:
"What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?" Seduce Adam Lambert, Obviously

Xena,
I love your threat of bad grammar. And yes, I am a wee bit superstitious. And I attended Catholic school. But you know, my computer doesn’t play Adam’s music or videos, and I don’t have even one downloaded photo of him,so I’m pretty safe from your threats. Except please don’t get the Mt. Olympus folks to bar my access to wowowow-I shall weep and pine.
Speaking of nasty words that you must look up in the dictionary, I played Scrabble last night, and was laughing inwardly the whole time.
Of course I will love it-I love him, don’t I?
Love you too,
Isabel
Poor Isabel, do you live in a convent? Are you "off the grid"? No music, videos or photos in your computer - sounds very austere to me. Yes, the game of Scrabble will never be the same for me either, when I win, I will expect a massage - we should contact the Scrabble dictionary people and get them to add our Adam vocabulary to the list of "approved".
Since you are so deprived and your only access to cyber-pleasure is on this site, I will call off the Olympians and save my favours for another time. I think the reason Xena II didn’t fare well at Catholic school is her inability to feel guilty or remorseful, refusal to play games and like Adam - is unfiltered.
Love you,
Xena
Xena,
No, I am just cyber-backward. I still watch videos when I am on someone else’s computer, and I look at the photos-I just don’t download them. I don’t even know how, and then what would I do with them? And, as I told NS a while ago, there is a Broadband access problem where we live, and we could get a different service, but it would be a lot more expensive, and I spend enough time on the computer as it is. More just might tip me over the edge. I do need to feed the kids now and then.
So I could have these things, but choose not to. It is tempting, though.
Thanks for calling off the Mt. Olympus cops.
I fared OK at Catholic school, but I’m not Catholic, and really not into guilt. Religion wasn’t really stressed much there anyway.
Love,
Isabel

Awesome GB!!
Surely by now he must have some idea that HE IS HOT!!!!!!
I agree GB,
I just LOVE him. The interview where he says "I like the top" is one of my all time favourites. I love how he dead pans to the camera and then laughs so geniunely after Kris’s reaction.
:D
Hugs,
Cleo
My dear, dear Sistergood:
Thank you ever so much for your comforting words which I have relayed also to my friend and his son. Through our Muse, we have found each other and for that alone, I am so thankful for Adam. And to all my fellow sisters who have suffered a loss, my love to you all.
Attended the memorial service for the baby this afternoon - she was so beautiful, eyes as blue as Adam’s and hair coloring, based on her older brother’s (3-1/2) looked like it would have been strawberry blonde, again just like Adam’s. Come to think of it, the young Dad, who is one good looking guy, same age as Adam, could pass for Adam if he dyed his hair black.
Someone posted this poem on her memorial card (WARNING: need tissues). But after reading this several times, it somehow gave me comfort as I am sure it has the family.
Let’s all thank God for the gift of life and hug our loved ones just as I am hugging you all tonight.
I’m Alright
My time was short, Mom and Dad, but I want you both to know,
I’m with our heavenly Father now where I’ll laugh and play and grow.
I know how much you love me and I know you cry at night,
But I need you to remember that everything’s alright.
God never hurts his children, He just kept me from the pain,
Then He let you keep my memory so you’d know His love remains.
At night when you lie in darkness and the pain overwhelms your heart,
Please know I’m always with you, because our souls do not depart.
God keeps them safe in heaven where one day we’ll all unite,
But for now let God embrace you with His arms around you tight.
I love you Mom and Daddy, God is great and I’m alright,
When you see my star in heaven, it’s my wings reflecting light.
(((((((((((SweetSue)))))))))))))))))
Sweet, Sweetsue,
That is beautiful.
Love,
Isabel
Hi Sweet Sue:
What a lovely poem…definitely need tissues right now.
I read a book called "The Shack" by Paul Young that might be of some comfort to the parents. It’s available at Costco.
Luv, Priscilla.
For those of us who are going stir-crazy waiting for some NEW Adam music ( like, all of us ! ) here is something "almost" new. Go here:
http://adamlambertobsession.blogspot.com/search/label/AI%20Performance
I didn’t know there was a "rehearsal" version of every AI song, I guess it is what they used for the clips at the end of the show. You can see the live and rehearsal version of each song. Pretty interesting !
Forgive me if this is already posted. Im not quite back in the swing but wanted to share.
