What Is It About Adam Lambert? by Allegra Huston

The author of Love Child reflects on the panty-throwing days of yesteryear … and on the latest inspiration for the flinging of undergarments from ‘American Idol.’

Editor’s Note: Allegra Huston’s new book, Love Child: A Memoir of Family Lost and Found, hit bookstores in April and has received rave reviews from Melik Kaylan at Forbes, the Daily Telegraph and wOw’s own Liz Smith, among others. Allegra is the youngest daughter of film director John Huston and sister of Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston. She was born in London, raised in Ireland and Los Angeles, and now lives in Taos, NM. She was a publisher in London for nine years and has been a freelance writer and editor since 1994.

In the early ’80s, I moved to London and discovered that housewives were throwing their panties at Freddie Mercury. I found it baffling. Tom Jones I could understand, though I didn’t buy into it; but Freddie Mercury was so obviously gay. These 40-something women in polyester dresses and perma-set hair were making idiots of themselves on the BBC, as if they didn’t understand what gay was.

I haven’t had a crush on a famous person since my yearning, aged 14, for John Travolta to rescue me from the mountaintop house ...

Could they really not know? I was only 16, but I knew perfectly well – maybe it was because I came from Los Angeles. I’d gone to Frederick’s of Hollywood with my stepmother to buy pink ostrich-feather mules in a size 13 for her friend Philip, to assist in his transformation into Marcia Hardridge.

And now I’m in my 40s, and, if I were the panty-throwing type, I’d want to throw mine at Adam Lambert. What has happened to me?

I’ve never liked the front-combed hair-in-the-face look. I don’t know that I’d actually vote for the black nail polish. And I’m a bit worried that he’s got some ghastly secret piercings. To be honest, I’m not really sure I want to find out. But there’s something about him that keeps me — and half the women I know — replaying old "American Idol" episodes on DVR and gazing at photographs of his blue-penciled eyes. (Let’s not forget that Brando did eyeliner too.) Bravery, maybe — he hooked me with “Ring of Fire.” The damn-the-torpedoes flamboyance, the oh-my-god-what-did-I-just-do look when he finished. The intense self-discipline obvious behind the recklessness. And the sweetness. And the smile.

Frankly, I don’t mind whether he’s kissing a guy or a girl in that photo with the overcoat and scarf and purple hair held back by sunglasses; it’s a very sexy photograph. I wouldn’t want to print it out if he was kissing a girl. I’d be jealous of her. A guy, I can’t compete with.

I’m thinking it may be better to have a crush on a gay man. I haven’t had a crush on a famous person since my yearning, aged 14, for John Travolta to rescue me from the mountaintop house that, behind my grandmother’s back, we called Gloom Castle. I felt like an idiot then, and I’d feel like one now if I was mooning around over photos of Johnny Depp or Denzel Washington and wondering whether, if we were stuck in an elevator together, they just might be up for it. Of course, they’re more my age. I was at university listening to the original “Mad World” when Adam Lambert was born.

He’s utterly unattainable. So what am I thinking? This way, I can really laugh at myself. I’m not like those Freddie Mercury housewives; I know the score. This is not a sad obsession. I’m hoping it might be chic.

"What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?" Seduce Adam Lambert, Obviously

I can’t believe I just rolled through 6 pages of talk from middle-aged women about some guy named Adam Lambert.  Myself, I am only 66, married 44 years, two sons, four grandchildren, and all I want to do is spoon with Adam Lambert.  This is so crazy.  I am so grateful my husband loves him too.  I have’nt really cared about music or sex since I was about 58.  And then came Adam ……  I want to throw my granny pink underpants on the stage at the idol concert.  I can’t wait.  Look out Tampa, here I come.

Adam's Girl

Wow…finally somebody has put my feelings into words. Adam has taken a place in my life and it was totally unexpected. I’m not necessarily jealous of the love interest in his life (although, I wouldn’t turn him down if he came calling), but I am jealous of his mom. How wonderful would it be to get to spoil this guy?

He’s like a drug and I’m an addict. My husband tried to get tour tickets for me, but it was too late. That’s okay, I’ll wait for his solo concert. I read tons of blogs and posts about him every day and I fight the urge to post anything, but when I saw this, and it hit so close to home for me, I couldn’t resist!

I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts about this yet so i’m just adding my comment here…

Adam is delicious….  I think his charm is in how polite he is and how humble he was on the show…  there are guys that just ooze sex appeal and he is one of them for sure.  the leather helps too!  His eyes can seep in your soul…  I could care less if he is gay either..doesn’t matter at all…

I think a lot of it is that he resembles Elvis… and Elvis was it!!!! Elvis had everything……..  I believe that Adams most resembled feature of Elvis would be his nose……. it looks like Elvis nose….

I also think its just fun to love him because he brings youth back to a lot of people and makes them feel young again and happy…..

I noticed something  … did anyone hear Lionel Richies new song… I believe his new cd is called Just Go… I think that is the hit song off of there too.. that song just makes me feel happy everytime i hear it……..

I believe we are all trying to seek to be happy again……. and Adam is sheer happiness!!!

I’m obsessed about Adam and proud of it! He has made me do things that I never thought in a million years I would be doing. First, I watched AI from beginning to end. I have never done that (usually get bored after the auditions are over). When I spotted him in the auditions I said to my husband, "He’s HOT!!!" And every week I searched the show to find him. And voted like a madwoman every week—something I never did before. Also joined several fan sites, download pictures and videos all the time (watch the vids over and over) and seem to think of him throughout most of the day! I am even going to the concert. It’s as if he has taken over my whole being! I’m 40, married with 2 kids, but he has become such a big part of my life now. My family is used to it. When Kris won, the phone didn’t stop ringing that night and the next day. Everyone was giving me their condolences…I felt as if I lost a dear friend. I was so sad for him. But Adam’s uplifting spirit, and the way he carries himself in interviews, just made everything all better. He is so sweet and gracious, and soooo charming!! And the part you wrote about the kissing photo (with purple hair)—it could have been word for word from me! When I first saw it I thought, "Wow! This is really hot, and I’m enjoying looking at it! Thank god it’s not a girl!" Thanks for making the rest of us feel really normal!!

Probably better that he didn’t win … did you see the grin on his face when he lost ? Now he can do the album he wants and not have to work with AI and Clive Davis ( nothing against him but he is about 105 ) or be forced to sing No Boundries at every appearance like Kris is. Things work out for the best !

"I think it’s kinda funny, I think it’s kinda sad" (in a good way) that a 50+ Christian mom of two teenagers can have a major "crush" on Adam Lambert.  I think I have "Adamlitis" or something like that of which I do not want to be cured.  His voice is beautiful, speaking or singing.  I listen to his music over and over again.  I think my last celebrity "crush" was David Cassidy …about 40 years ago. Adam is a rare once-in-a-lifetime combination of looks, talent, humility, confidence, mystery, sense-of-humor and style that is universally attractive.  I hope he will not cave in to the pressures of the media, stay focused on his career, and deliver the best music ever!

I am a 63 year old grandma, and have a huge Adam crush.  I remember feeling this way about John and Paul of the Beatles - couldn’t get enough of them.  I hope he stays around for a long time and becomes hugely famous and a icon.
