'Amelia': The Movie: Hilary Swank Plays the Daring Aviator (Photos)

Photo Essay

The highly anticipated movie portraying Amelia Earhart’s life, “Amelia,” debuts today in theaters. Earhart, known for flirting with danger as she took to the skies and also followed a no-holds-barred rule with her personal life, will grace the big screen, courtesy of the transformational talents of two-time Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank. The movie is a must-see. Our grande dame of dish, Liz Smith, says Swank is ‘in a role it seems she was born to play.’ Earhart, who became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, proving to the world that women can take on daring and challenging roles once reserved for men, was honored on our Women Who Dared list. Also, back in March 2008, when we asked our audience “Which four women would you like to see on Mr. Rushmore?,” many of you voted for Earhart. Clearly, she is a woman many wOwers look up to, and with the movie now out — with a star-studded cast, to boot (Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, et al) — surely watching this film is on many people’s to-do lists …

Tell us: Have you seen “Amelia”? What did you think of Earhart’s life? Did you like the movie?

I’ve not yet seen the movie Amelia but I shall.  This is the movie I’ve been waiting for all summer.  From the previews it does appear that Hiliary Swank as the look of Ms. Earhart … her slim build is perfect.  I have some concern as to Richard Gere but then again I had some doubts about his role in Chicago which proved to be unnecessary.

I am anxious about the story-line in Amelia.  There have been so many documentaries made about the aviatrix and her life;  I wonder if a biopic could do justice.  I sure hope so.

I can’t wait to see this. From what I have heard, this movie could do it justice. Seems all of the actors involved did heavy research.

Run to see this movie because it’s just plain excellent!  What a relief to sit in a theatre and see a film, tastefully done, well acted, beautifully photographed, wonderful directing - Congratulations to all the wonderful people involved and thank you for your work.

This movie does look like a must see hope it gets to my area soon.  Amelia was a bold woman with much courage.  Her story has always intrigued me.

New York Times

"Exasperatingly dull production"

Wall Street Journal:

"The film struggles to stay aloft, and may soon vanish, like its namesake, without a trace"

Rolling Stone:

"There is not a real or spontaneous minute in it"

………etc,  Plain tedious, it is a deeply pedestrian film that looks paticularly lame whenever it tries to take us aloft…….

And when i see Richard Gere, i have to run away! lol Thanks but not for me!

I will probably wait until the DVD comes out, but it is definitely a film I will want to see. Earhart has always been one of my heroes, and I cannot get over how much Hilary Swank resembles her. And indeed, were there a Mt. Rushmore for women, Earhart should be on it! She was an amazing woman in many ways.

Just saw this movie today with my boyfriend and both of us loved it! We loved the outfits, the old planes, understood why she had to commercialize herself in order to fly and then the unusual love she had for her husband. She was a feminist who didn’t expect fidelity, but both seem to have truly loved one another.

Hillary once again can embody a character and make her real. Richard Gere is wonderful as the supportive husband. Ewan McGregor is also good as the supportive friend and lover who Richard Gere tolerates.

Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars. Ebert doesn’t give the movie a 4th star because the movie lacks drama, which means, Amelia didn’t have enough scandal in her life to make a more "dramatic" movie. A lot of movies invent something that didn’t happen for dramatic effect. This movie chose not to and it’s getting bad reviews for that.

But for us, as a bio film on a female with a love of adventure, it was great! For once, they stuck to the real story.
