Christie Brinkley, the model and ex-wife of Billy Joel, had warm words for the legendary musician — who announced Wednesday that he’s splitting from his third wife Katie Lee.

"My heart goes out to them," Brinkley told "Access Hollywood" at a gala in New York City on Wednesday evening. "It’s sad news, but Billy is a great dad and a great friend, so of course, I wish him the best."

While rocky relationship rumors between Joel and Lee have surfaced in past months — including the 27-year-old Lee caught with Israeli fashion designer Yigal Azrouel at a Miami hotel — a rep for the "Piano Man" says the split was amicable.

"After nearly five years of marriage, Billy and Katie have decided to separate," a rep for the artist said in a statement. "The decision is the result of much thought and consideration. Billy and Katie remain caring friends, with admiration and respect for each other."

Joel, 60, wed Lee in a lavish Long Island ceremony in 2004, when the brunette was just 23 years old.

Joel, who needs no introduction, is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend with more than two dozen top-ten hits in his long career. Lee has found fame, too. She hosted the first season of Bravo’s "Top Chef" reality cooking series. She has appeared on several other shows and has been featured in several publications as a chef, food critic and author.

I wondered when she was going to wake up one day and go "oh my gawwd… icky old man"… Now Joel can go back to cruising his daughters myspace or facebook page for his next date.

chrome toe…know where you got the name, probably put your foot in your mouth all the time. Interesting how you make Kathie Lee a total idiot. What she didn’t know she was sleeping with, marrying an older man? She didn’t notice his bank account? Your attack of Billy Joel is silly and specious. I suppose he twisted her arm to marry him? Tell me anybody every hear of the Kathy Lee before she married him? Most guys like Joel are pretty shy, not innocent, but shy and when you see a young er woman with an older guy, she’s made sure she was in his sight line, I can assure you. So save your snark until you grow up. I think I knew the wedding bells ceased chiming  that story in Town and County Magazine (I think it was T&C) on her closet and the money she had spent of the items in that closet.

Exactly Chrome Toe…and FUNNY!

I believe that the young men of today are too busy being "metro sexual" and "sensitive" to attract a mate that needs or wants some stablity. I think that these younger women see an older man as more secure and worldly, which is a real plus.

Then one day…that view from ‘behind’ just isn’t as tolerable as it once was… ;]

Tip for Billy Joel; ….back away from the bed…never turn your rear end to the audience….

Or like marrying your father…don’t think anybody forced HER to do anything…poor helpless stupid woman fooled by an older man…how does that happen?  You want lots of pairs of Jimmy Choos?

These famous old men who think these woman marry them because they are so in love are foolish.  For some reason they think that a young thing on their arm will keep them young and charming.  Guess what guys they use you as a stepping stone.  Now she is famous and they are saying "Billy Who".  I’m glad when evefrfy Birthday comes around because that means I have lived another year.

These famous older men don’t "think" they can marry younger women, they DO marry younger women. Now––if you were a famous older man and some young beauty agreed to tie the knot or just tie without the knot, wouldn’t you welcome that with open arms and heart? And if that woman truly loved you? That does occur, you know. It’s not all about sex. And "she" is not famous––I have even forgotten her name––and "Billy Who?"––unless you are REALLY young, unless you aren’t into music at all, you know who Billy Joel is.

I don’t know — it creeps me out to think of sleeping with someone my daughter’s age……..and actually in this case, with 43 years age difference, she could have been his granddaughter.   =)

You may be saying Billy Who? but I can assure you his bankers aren’t and in the end isn’t that what matters? Actually older men, younger women have a contract…he gets a young thing and she gets a lifestyle…but it was clear when I first saw her on that chef show…that she was a rather silly young woman and I figured this would be the outcome of that marriage. Billy has always been in love with Christy…and I expect he probably still is at some level.  He can afford to dump her.

I remember this lady from the first season of "Top Chef", and she was not the most "impressive" hostess.

I like Billy Joel.  I saw him in concert back in the stone age when I was in college, and he is the piano man—so much energy onstage.  My boyfriend is an excellent classical pianist, and he says he owes it all to his teacher, who was also Billy Joel’s piano teacher.  I hope for Billy Joel’s future happiness; he needs to find a woman who is not just arm candy and who loves him for who he is inside.

Interesting information about your boyfriend, kermie. Does he perform somewhere now? Joel trained as a classical pianist. I have always found his work to be outstanding––an extremely talented musician, songwriter, & composer. He’s also eclectic––can go from honky tonk to serious blues to Cole Porter to Ray Charles–––his albums are never boring and always inventive.

Phyllis—No, he goes to Steinway Hall (the staff know him) and plays the incredibly expensive pianos (people shopping always applaud), but his paycheck is writing computer programs, for which he gets paid very well.  His first love is playing the piano, but he is a pragmatist, especially in this economy.  Thank you for asking.
