Candice Bergen: An Alternative Punishment for Roman Polanski

Candice Bergen
The Roman thing is complicated as we all know. It brings out the dark, avenging side of America, yet it is a crime. It was absolutely a criminal, indecent, amoral act and should be acknowledged and in some way paid for. But he is a brilliant, gifted artist. He is a father. And he is 75. How much time should he serve? And why is he not allowed to be home in Switzerland under house arrest? With his kids? Why in prison? What should not happen is his being made an example of with a harsh sentence. There should be a resolution that factors in his contributions and his age. Prolonged house arrest?

Stating as you and others have that he is a pedophile is libel.  Ask an attorney.  The attorney will ask if you have something in writing from a psychiatrist who evaluated Roman Polanski and determined that he was a pedophile. Which you don’t. He however has the determination by the psychiatrists at Chino who determined he was NOT a pedophile. And "opinion" is not a defense when you have stated it as "fact" as you and others have not only here but everywhere else on the internet.

Baby Snooks, ok, since none of us have his records to evaluate, I will retract the word pedophile if you object to the clinic use of the word—but leave in that perhaps a long jail sentence will dampen his Lolita lust. The common understanding among lay people is  that adult men who have sex with children are pedophiles.  So, where do you get your inside information that he is NOT a pedophile?

This attitude just echos a defense for anyone who has committed a detestable crime…"Just let me be free and go away; in exchange, I will make artistic (whatever) contributions to society, donate some of my vast monetary earnings to charity, be a do-gooder in my career field from this point forwarder now that I’ve been "caught"! Please just don’t ever punish me or take away my freedom for what I did, based of my future potential of doing well!"  Come on, Candice. Be real. He needs to pay the time regardless of how old he is!  Sometimes age should NOT have it’s priviledges! This is one of those times.

Baby Snooks - If he fled, and they can arrest him for it - then he did NOT complete whatever the terms of his plea agreement are.  And - technically - if the judge didn’t ACTUALLY break the plea agreement, in writing/in court, before Roman fled (was only saying he was going to), ROMAN is the one who broke the plea deal.    Therefore, all bets are off. Any "time off for good behavior", etc., Roman got are gone.

What is wrong with these Hollywood elitists that feel Polanski should be left alone??? He is a scumbag and should have to pay dearly for what he has done. It was rape of a 13 year old and this low life needs to be punished in the full extent of the law. Actually, the electric chair would be too good for him. Hope he goes to prison and the inmates take care of him.

Normally, I’d say lock his artistic behind up.  However, in this regard, has not the victim , herself, requested that the entire incident be dropped?  I seem to have read that she was quoted as saying that everytime a district attorney wants a promotion, they drag out this case and open her wounds all over again and disrupt her new life.  If that is the case, and for this reason and no other, then I say forget it and let Polanski face his maker and deal with it at that time.

In my life, I’ve been in contact with more than my fair share of crooks, thugs and pervs. I cannot tell you how tired I got of the way the more ‘middle-class’ thugs were treated as opposed to the average, street level dope dealer. From the warden on down, on both sides of the bars, the class system on the inside was ridiculous. A White middle-class looking sex offender got better treatment than some poor schlub who knocked over a couple of convenience stores in order to get money to sustain a drug habit.

In closing, I am not , AM NOT, implying that the actions of the convenience store robbing junkie were any less worthy of punishment than those of the perv.  Just that, they are BOTH deserving of punishment.

What is wrong with you Hollywood people?  Do you all think that if you make good movies you should be above the law?  Rape is RAPE!  It doesn’t matter who does it.  If there is ample evidence and it fits the definition it is RAPE and is punishable according to the law of the land it occurs in. The only people who think that Roman Polanski should get off on his RAPE charges are his movie industry friends, the liberal and his fellow child rapist and molesters.  This countries laws are based on precedent and justice for all, no matter who you are, who you know and how much money you make. What kind of precedent would it set that if you have enough famous friends telling the world how talented you are you can RAPE anyone you want including children. I can’t even believe WOW has the nerve to call itself a feminist web site.  What a joke.

Too bad this man wasn’t sought a bit more enthusiastically in the first place. Too bad for him. He could have adequately paid for his crimes, hopefully with regret and contrition, and left alone to use his talent until he died. He could have represented the importance of accepting responsibilty for one’s behavior.

Was it the wink and nod expected by celebrity? Was it sympathy for his tragic circumstances at the hands of the Manson family? Was he idolized and protected because of his talent?

He almost did it. He almost let time erase memories and feign forgiveness. It was pure narcissism to believe he would no longer be wanted for a crime that has no statute of limitations.

I understand the victim’s lack of desire to pursue this. After all, she is the only person who has paid for this horrific act. She may never stop paying, but it is time to share the pain. It is time for Polanski to atone.

I have read about 90% of the posts. What disgusts me the most of what I have read are the people that claim to be advocates for women and children. These advocates support the pedophile Polanski. They have said that as long as the victim forgives him, he should go free.

How is that advocating for victims? If you are an advocate and you believe that Polanski should not be punished, you should get a new job.

Roger another subject we agree on!  Im sorry but if that man did that to my daughter at 13 - I dont care if he fled to France - we knew where he was - yes France wouldnt give him back to us - guess what - that would be one body no one would ever find as the wildlife in somewhere would be feasting on him.

I think its awful just plain awful there are some people who feel this man should not carry out the sentence he was given and pay the victim what is due to her and then some - they are sick and when some start to boycot their movies maybe just maybe they will get the hint.

Dear Daughter,

How lucky of you to be raped and violated by such a talented and influential man as Roman Polanski. Oh and dear daughter he’s suffered so many greater losses in his life than that which you suffered by his hands and well other body parts. You want him punished like other rapists? Well daughter, it wasn’t like you were raped by any common rapist. This was Roman Polanski. Can’t you just let it go?

Love,

Mom

Candice Bergen, I’m extremely disappointed with you! There is nothing complicated about the Polanski matter. He drugged, rapped and sodomized a 13 year old girl. He should have gone to prison, but once again was cowardly and ran. For some insane reason he has been allowed to remain free for 30 plus years. He has not served time for the crime. That 30 years have passed does not change a damn thing. That he may be a brilliant and gifted artist is completely irrelevent! That he is a father is irrelevent! He is a child rapist and should be in jail the same as if he was an average joe who raped a child. Shame on you for supporting special treatment!

Kathy Lee
Thank goodness for Kirsty Alley and Chris Rock for not defending RP raping a 13 year old little girl.  There still are a few Hollywood Elites that understand the law and support children.  Good for them for speaking out.  Winger is a washed up actress who is trying to make a come back, I see she chose one hell of a way to do it.  Candice and Whoopi…I am so ashamed of you both, your names are on this website and you have turned your back against women and children.  I think Wow should change their name to Wicked old Women who do not support Women on the Web.

Kathy Lee,

You have a right to your opinion. Being ashamed of Candice and Whoopi, who you think have turned their backs on women and children, is also your right. However, they have not turned their backs on women and children, just because they’ve expressed themselves, just as you have expressed yourself. Debra Winger took herself out of the Hollywood scene by the way; she didn’t "wash up". I am ashamed of the fact that you think this site should be renamed to what you called it. WowOwow.com was not set up just so the panelists could have opinions about women’s issues only. They can have opinions about all the news. That’s what they’ve done, although Whoopi did not state her opinion on wowOwow, but on The View. The View is also not there to support only what’s good or bad for women. They express themselves on many, many matters as the show was developed to do. Just because you don’t agree with these women’s opinions does not make you right and does not make them "wicked."

Murphy Mac, I found it interesting that there were quite a few contradictions in your post.  But the one that really stood out is the fact that you say it is okay for some to have the views and opinions that they do and then you turn around and insult Kathy Lee for having her opinion on this subject matter and continue to tell her it does not make her right.  I believe she was just stating her opinion as you have and many others have.  I also do not agree with Whoopi and the other hollywood elites that support this child molester and that does not make me wrong or right, I am simply stating my personal opinion and I do believe that it is okay to do that still, then again, maybe not.  We are entitled to our opinion without being insulted for it, rather you like it or not!
