Candice Bergen, Elliott Gould, Harrison Ford ... and Man's First Step on the Moon
In response to: Today marks 40 years since man's first visit to the moon. Did you watch the event? What do you recall thinking and feeling?
I was in Oregon making a movie with Elliott Gould and Harrison Ford, who was then still working part time as a carpenter. We were in my room, a bunch of us, and I think we had just seen "2001: A Space Odyssey" at a drive-in with a full moon hanging over the screen. And of course we were stoned. I found it exciting. Moving. But also wondered about millions (when millions meant something) being spent on this when there were critical problems not being addressed on earth.

"Candid Candace" ;-) I love your postings and your honesty! Your observations give me insight to a time when I was just a wide-eyed child in the heart of the bible belt, taking it all in at face value.
Forty years ago, I was in first grade (our new school was being built and we had to double-up in summer school) and I remember all of us in a large classroom and watching the moon landing on little TVs situated around the room. I don’t remember much else about first grade, but I do remember that - our teachers were in awe and as a result, so were we.
As an adult, I’ve learned to be fascinated with the little things, but to question everything. I’m still amazed at man’s accomplishments, but your comment about why and where the money is spent is never far from my mind - and I vote with my head.
I spent yesterday on a Boston Legal rampage. Thank you very much Candice. You are such a superb lady and actress!
I was on a golf driving range with my dad and they broadcast it over the PA system. No one moved or spoke. It was an incredibly dramatic moment in time. But you know, I was reading this morning about the folks out there that believe with all their hearts that the moon landing was staged somewhere out in Arizona. They are adamant about it. Then there are still those that believe the holocaust of the Jews during WWII was also a hoax. I am not very gullible and friends even call me skeptical about way too many things. But I believe that humanity is capable of both the greatest of things (the moon landing) as well as the absolute atrocities (the holocaust). I think it comes down to the balances that occur in the cycles of life: the ying and the yang.
I don’t know why but it stunned me to think of Candice Bergen as stoned. Stunned or not I shared the same feeling about the money being spent that could have been spent elsewhere. Still do.
As I recall my parents responded to my horror with the explanation that sending a man to the moon would result in all sorts of things including finding a cure for cancer.
What if anything did it result in that has benefitted humanity?
Baby Snooks,
that computer you use is a benefit… as is ultrasound and just about every technological advancement we enjoy today. We live longer and healthier lives due to all the research that got us to the moon.
and Imagine how many lives of the poor in the US would have benefited if rich limousine liberals didn’t hide their money in tax shelters and instead gave 1/2 of their millions to those who have less.
just saying….
