Candice Bergen's Favorite Shoes

Candice Bergen
Whoa. My daughter once made me a pair of birthday shoes when she was 10 or 11. I had them framed in a glass box and they hang on the wall in NYC. They are brilliant. Made of paper, lace and ribbon, and she taped Q-Tips inside them to massage my feet. And my husband is one of the all-time great gift givers. He really loves it and creates a sense of fun and surprise. He always hides his gifts in something else. The first big one was camouflaged inside a new pair of Tod’s loafers — which I loved. When I found what was inside them (a beautiful, understated piece of jewelry), I almost plotzed.

What a wonderful imagination your daughter has, Candice — but one might expect that quality given her parents.

I’ve been lucky enough to receive marvelous presents - my favorite was a trip to the UK and Italy from an old friend as a reward for having my first draft accepted for my doctorate!

when my daughter was about 11 or 12, money was tight all around.  So instead of buying me something she made me a scaprebook of pictures and poetry.  The beginning poem was by Maya Angelou, whose writings and poetry I love and admire.  My daughter had no idea, she just knew her mother.  I treasure this gift over anything purchased to this day.

Awww, my Mom saved everything I ever made for her when I was a child in an old cedar chest.  A few months ago we went through it and laughed for hours.  Memories are great, even if I didn’t remember half of them.  Even better if you frame them, great idea!  Maybe I will frame my picture of the cow with breasts I made when I was 5, lol  Guess I didn’t know what cow udders looked like.  :o)  Those shoes are something to treasure.

Candice, thank you so much for sharing that about your daughter.

Children and family are so precious. Even then she was thinking of your comfort.

I have hanging on the wall pictures my boys made when they were small, my little artists.

For Mother’s Day one year, my kids when small made a Build A Bear for Nana with I LOVE YOU NANA in it  that you can hear her play back from time to time with a smile on her face.  The boys picked it out for her, pink (it was a cancer awareness bear, but they didn’t pick it for that, but because it sparkled and Nana collected teddy bears).  So they kissed the hearts, placed it inside and stuffed it.  Now they are 12 and 14.

But for a moment locked in time, she will always hear their tiny young voices and have a keepsake and memory they gave her.

I think it is sweet of your husband as well to find ways to keep surprising you and you him.  In a way we all are our own romance novel being written. :winks:

Again thanks for sharing! It brought a smile to my face.

My I-Pod. I was able to take my extensive CD collection and put it all on one little gadget.

The fact that is was a red I-Pod which gave back to charity made it even better.

This was not the best gift my husband gave me but the funniest. He let me out at the grocery, said he had an errand to run. I came out of grocery and did not see the car any place, very unlike him, he always was right there as I came out. Suddenly this beautiful yellow Mercedes started blowing its horn right in front  of me. Of course it was him. It took me longer to shop for groceries than for him to buy a new car. He likes to prove his point beyond question.

Loved your story.  Homade gifts always mean more. My best gift is a wonderful husband, kids, & grandkids.  Any chance you can get re-runs of Murphy Brown back on the TV?  We love you!

The best gift I think I ever got was a giant dollhouse my father made for me when I was about 5. It was Christmas, my father dressed up as Santa and snuck out the back of our house with the dollhouse. His pants fell down while he was holding the giant, HEAVY gift and then he got stuck on the gate. FINALLY he made it to the front porch and my mother had forgetten he was out there as we had several guests for a Christmas party. Needless to say, he was on the porch for at least a half an hour with the dollhouse. Inside the attic of the house, as part of the gift,  was a teddy bear who I named Sally. When I was about 9 my mother washed her in the washing machine and her head came off. She has the old swivel head so you can’t just pop it back on. Several years later, Sally was brought to a doll repair shop. Weeks went by and we hadn’t heard from the owner. She went out of business and left town…. WITH MY BEAR! About a year later my mother received a call from the county sheriff and was asked to come to the station to identify Sally the Bear. I have her and she still doesn’t have her head attached. I am 41 now and those were the two best gifts ever because of the thought into them and the darn funny stories attached.

He is right here in my arms in this picture!  My silly, sweet Pug, Pygar!  This was taken after we got home from getting him!

All I have to do is see Candice Bergen or hear her name mentioned, & I’m "there".  Beauty, intelligence, talent & heart.  I love her.  Chloe’s gift is indeed a treasure.  My husband is the surprise planner extraordinaire, sometimes to point of inconvenience.  I might plan to attend an event only to find that he’s planned a surprise trip for us that encompasses that date.  He is a most thoughtful man & I think the best gift that he gives me almost daily is that he COOKS!  By the way, I watch the "Boston Legal" reruns to once again see Candice, Spader & Shatner.  Fabulous.
