Itty Bitty Kitty Ditties: A Quirky Celebration of Cats

From the website that celebrates America’s oldest dogs and wOw women’s pets, wowOwow.com now brings you adorable feline friends.

Photo Essay

This slide show includes charming drawings and witty poems from the book Itty Bitty Kitty Ditties. Illustrator Alex Boies, writer Tim Hodapp and designer Jo Davison teamed up to create a cartoon book dedicated to felines of all shapes and demeanor. Itty Bitty Kitty Ditties, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., leaves readers with the undeniable conclusion: Just because most cats have paws, pointy ears and whiskers, doesn’t mean they are all the same …

Do you have an unforgettable cat? E-mail photos with stories to submit@wowowow.com, and we will consider them for a future slide show.

I am ruled by four feline overlords: Lilo (a true DIVA who looks like the ginormous cat on the IBKD title slide…she wants the world to know that she finds the use of HER name as an acronym for Lindsay Lohan  REPREHENSIBLE!!!!), Little Bit (my daughter’s rescue kitten who has become anything but LITTLE, and who’s catitude is second only to Lilo’s), Stitch (a beautiful, sweet, long-haired, black tom who is becoming a ‘distinguished older man’ as the tips of his chest hairs are turning silver…We never thought he could be any prettier, but he IS!), and Kiki (a solid white kitty with one blue eye and one green, she is shy but affectionate—the ‘head-butt’ being her favorite greeting). They bid me to extend my thanks to wOw for acknowledging feline uniqueness and superiority. My Jack Russell TERRORDaisy, wants me to remind everyone that, as the opposition, it is her DUTY to oppose the cats!

we have two tiger striped tabby cats named athena and amber. athena is a DSH born in 2000. she was a neighborhood stray who came to be adopted by us around my birthday. her unusual story is that she was adopted by the dog we had at the time.

sarah was 1/4 pitt and 3/4 lab (but looked like a pitt and thought she was a cat) and very loving of all animals. i big sweetie. anyway, we already had a couple cats in the house. but one day we heard this mewling from this kitten our big happy dog had tree’d in our front yard. i brought her in (little thing with this enourmous head and ears) and proceeded to feed her. i then check with everybody on our street and come to find out she had been adopted by a family down the block who eventually stopped feeding her. so she was open and looking for a new family. she seemed scared and worried about sarah UNTIL she realized she was in and settled, then she ruled the roost and sarah to boot.

she is very wise and very strong and soon became alpha to sarah and the other cats. so my son named her "Athena, the warrior kitten". her and sarah would play chasing games with each other in the backyard and then curl up together at night in my bedroom on the rug at the foot of my bed. you see, athena never had been scared of sarah at all. it was just a ploy to get me to adopt her.

this is how it went down:

athena wandered into our yard seeing the food on the porch for princee our fixed DSH tuxedo kitty and sarah of course bounded over to make friends. they made an instant friendship right there and then. sarah knew that athena needed a new home and said "hey, we are ALL cats here, so just come on in. they will love you!" athena wasn’t so sure so her and sarah put on that show and won an academy award for their performance. she has been with us ever since. sadly, we had to give sarah away in 2003 because we had to move into an apartment and we couldn’t keep her. but she went to a good home and is very happy, her nickname was the cat that barks, because she was sure she was a cat.

amber is a DLH tiger tabby cat, who could pass for a maine coon easily. we got her in 2004. she thinks she is a dog. her story is that she comes from a long line of DSH tiger tabbys. her mother, father, grandmother and ALL her many siblings from many litters are ALL DSH tiger tabbys. we guess she is a throwback. she loved a smaller dog we were allowed to have in another apartment that was a corgie beagle named "gimli" (after the dwarf in the lord of the rings books/movies). she thought he was her man. i swear she would cuddle up to him, pester him and cry when he wasn’t near her. i said they were the first interspecies marriage.

one day he was snoozing by the coffee table and she came up and woke him up to cuddle. he got all huffy about it and turned his back on her. she started playing with his tail. he growled and woofed at her a bit. but she never stopped and ended up getting him to play with her. i laughed til i cried. (gimli had to be given away also because when my grandson came along he didn’t get along with him because of other toddler abuse in his past, he was a rescue dog. now he is happy with an elderly couple no kids).

anyway, those are my two cats and their stories. thanx, w-o-w for adding cats to the repetoire!

Hi HaBibi,  Thought you might enjoy this.  :o)

The Story of Adam & Eve’s Pets

Adam and Eve said, ‘Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.

And God said, I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves.

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.

And it was a good animal and God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail

And Adam said, ‘Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.’

And God said, ‘I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.’ And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them. And they were comforted

And God was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well.’

And God said, I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration.

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.

And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat’s eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.

And they were greatly improved.

And God was pleased… .

And Dog was happy… . .

And Cat didn’t give a shit one way or the other…

Hi Heidi,

I have that and yes, I ABSOLUTELY love it!!!  Thanks for that. Cats are so cool aren’t they. I also have a great description that reveals the cats superior independance they have, it goes as follows…….You can call a dog and he will come running, BUT, call a cat and he will take a message……. and get back to you! :)

That is great! I can’t figure out why I have the sudden urge to needle-point this story, though. Perhaps it is the will of my overlords!!!

Some time after we buried our 2 dear old Siamese ladies who enriched our lives for 18 and 21 yrs we adopted 2 rescue cats from Petsmart. Sascha is the sweetest male cat on the planet,a Maine Coon cat, who if he could talk I know he’d be profound. I’m sure he knows the meaning of life. His maybe sister is a fluffy Siamese sort with dark gray points and the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen. She has the most unusual language & talks all the time going between meows, chirps and even stranger sounds which I find very amusing, as she is so intense in her speech. Cats rule!!!!!

We have two cats.  A gray dilute tortoiseshell named Macaroni (our daughter was 5 when we got her.  No other name would do.)  When my mother passed away, we inherited her black and white tuxedo cat, Elvis.  He is quite vocal and, thus, aptly named.  We also have a collie, Peeve (our "pet peeve").  The dog adores the cats and they, well, tolerate him.  I’m sure they would all agree that this little homage to cats is quite appropriate.

Lizzie-

I had a beautiful torti Maine coon named Timmy. I neighbor put him out after having a baby, with that old wives tale. If he smells milk on the baby breath it will sit on it and suffocate it. He was the greatest, proud and gorgeous a real talker and like a little puppy would greet me at the door.  He got tested for feline leukemia, but unfortunately there was no test at that time for feline aids which he succumbed too.

We had 2 cats at the time my son Brian was born, Oreo Cookie ( you guessed it) and Nucy (hungarian for bunny rabbit) she was all grey. Neither one of them sat on his face. They sniffed his toes and the stroller, even jumped into and out of the crib but never harmed a hair on his head.

Now we have six, Oreo is 16 yrs old and attached at the hip to Brian along with Slugger, peanut butter boy, Mocha and Bandit. Peanut was the first I ever had to bottle feed, you never think that to look at him. All our cats are either strays rescued, as it should be..

In 2001 my cat Orie was diagnosed with diabetes. Because I had a hard time finding the right person to administer insulin shots and didn’t want to impose on neighbors, I stopped traveling and decided that since I was home I would help others who had the same problem. That was the start of a new business which has introduced me to dozens of adorable, loving kitties. You can see pictures of some of my furry friends in these places:

What a wonderful little treat this was! I laughed aloud, and recognized some traits of cats in my life - cats past and present. So on behalf of La-La, Toastarella, Miss Poodelle (all beaming at me from the great cat beyond) and from Little Rain, who even now is stretched out full length on the back of my chair, thanks for these wonderful drawings and poems! And thanks to all the cat-women who have posted such great things in response.

Being the proud owner of 2 kitties, I adore little books and pics and stories about cats. We have two male cats whom we both just love to bits.  Last November, my baby girl kitty passed on after 13 years.  She was sweetness in a fluff ball and I miss her a great deal still.  But, we got our new kitty because of our loss, and he’s turned out to be the absolute sweetest cat we’ve owned.  He’s got two moods: Happy and Playful.  He’s darling. I’ll be a cat fan forever!
