Question of the Day | 07/02/2009 11:00 pm

In celebration of Independence Day, when was the last time you really took advantage of your freedom?

Candice Bergen Was Arrested for an Anti-War Protest

I take advantage of our freedom every day. My daughter just spent ten months in Ethiopia and came home with a new appreciation of our rights and comforts (and toilet paper) and freedoms. But I guess 40 years ago when we were protesting the war and a bunch of us were arrested for blocking the hall in the Senate was the most theatrical.

Liz Smith Revels in Her Freedom to Gossip and More

I have been celebrating my independence since my bylined column began back in 1976 and I had my first real opportunity to write almost anything I damned please and the Devil take the consequences.

I had to be responsible for what I printed and I learned a lot about taking credit, taking blame, trying to be fair-minded and still entertaining.

Come to think of it, the 4th of July as I grew up in Texas was a much bigger holiday than even Christmas. We went crazy on the 4th and my parents let my brothers and me out the front door summer mornings and didn’t ask us where we were going, how would we get lunch and how they could reach us. We just knew we had to be home by five o’clock PM to bathe and dress for Daddy. It was a much more informal kind of growing up but it spelled FREEDOM. It taught a lot of self-reliance.

Joan Ganz Cooney on the Gift of Freedom

I take advantage of my freedom every day just by walking out of my apartment house and going to my office and saying what I want to say — negative or positive — about our government and anything else that comes up. Our personal freedom is the most precious thing this country gives to each of us.

I’d love to read anything you wrote! so when it’s out there let us know…. what book about clothing is it?

And yes… my name cracks me up to. my best friend and I got pedicures one time and I asked if they had anything "chrome" and got my toe nails painted in well… chrome. so my friend told me my indian name is "chrome toe". Which is hilarious and fits so well with the motorcycle thing. it’s a little disgusting as well but hey… what’s life without some irony.

I agree with everyone, I express my freedom everyday with the choices I am allowed to make.  Yes my choices are limited to what I can or can’t afford but at least I have choices…If I dont like childcare for my daughter, I can change it.  If I dont like where I work, I can change it.

Independence Day for me changed in the year 2003 when my now husband was servicing in Iraq and when he called me on 4th of July I asked "did you see any fireworks" and boy did I get an answer.  He saw some fireworks but they were Red, White, and Blue.  They were on a convoy mission and came under attack and they had to call for aerial back up so Blackhawk Helicopters showed up and in his words "lit up the sky", he said those were the best fireworks he has ever seen.

That was the day I think my whole world changed, to know how close our Military Men & Women come to death everyday fighting not only for our Freedom but Freedom for so many others, it just takes my breath away. Then on top of that we have men and women who put their lives on the line for us here in the US everyday, our Law Enforcement and Firefighters, Doctors, Nurses and sometimes just everyday people.

Thank you!!!!

Great post, C Hardy!  Too many to count have made the ultimate sacrifice so we can make choices without fear or imprisonment.  There is so very much to be grateful for.

Sweet freedom!  I feel so blessed to be able to express my opinion on any subject!  I too, must mention and honor the women and men of our military.  I do not agree with the war but I respect the dedication to duty and the sacrifice of the families of those who serve.  Each and every one of them is a tribute to our freedom.  Happy 4th and may there some day be peace for all.

I take advantage of my freedom every single day. I was just thinking about how not only am I outspoken in general but i have the freedom as a woman to be outspoken in my marriage and not worry that i’ll be stoned… or have accid thrown in my face. or at the very least cast out and not allowed any of our assets. It gives me the freedom to be me.

We have so many freedoms that we take so for granted. I can turn on my tap and have water come out. I can get on my motorcycle and ride wherever I want whenever I want and not face military stops or fear for my life from some random roadside bomb. I can wear a bikini walking around my front yard and not fear that the military will abduct me or try me and jail me or worse.

Oh yes…. i take advantage of my freedom on a daily basis. And what’s more… i recognize that fact and appreciate it.

Ladyhawke ..
I NEVER take my freedom for granted..I have lived, and traveled in lands that do not have such a treasure and it makes one acutely aware of it.  I vote regularly, men died to give me that gift, I try to participate in the dialog as much as I can, I served in our great military( USN), and I have raised my children to appreciate what they have.  I am proud to be an American who cries freely at the playing of our National Anthem, the Navy Hymn, ( and really all the Hymns), I weep when the flag is raised, I am transfixed at Arlington,  where I have several family member interred,  and the changing of the guard at the Unknowns takes my breath away.  I am an AMERICAN, and mighty  proud of it!

Ladyhawke, maybe some of us saying we take advantage of our freedom isnt meant in a bad way, they we aren’t appreciative of the freedoms we have.  I can say that I have always shed a tear at any playing of our National Anthem.

We have so many freedoms in our country.  If you think about it, we are able to express our thoughts on this website without any retribution.  If we were in Iran, this website would probably be shut down and they would find out who you are and throw you in prison.  Maybe even worse.

I think about how women and people of color have fought for the right to vote.   Not that long ago, some men didn’t think women had the mental capacity to vote.  Blacks were given outrageous literacy tests to keep them from voting or they were being killed for having the audacity to register to vote.

I could go on and on about so many freedoms that we have in this country.  We live in a great country!

Each and every day I take advantage of my freedom(s) as an American Citizen in so many ways, some ways taken for granted that they are not even noticed.

Each time we log onto this site, share our thoughts with each other on every subject imaginable, with so many various viewpoints, I am so very thankful.

Each time we drive through Camp Pendleton and see our courageous men and women training to protect us on various fronts, I am so very grateful.

I could go on and on but I know you all get the message.

Happy 4th of July to everyone.  Be safe, happy and grateful!

GOD BLESS THE UNITED SATES OF AMERICA

When you’re opinionated as I am, you find you’re thankful for your freedoms every single day.

I’m married to a military man (previously active duty - currently Reserves) and though I don’t always agree with decisions made by our government, I always have the greatest respect for those who choose to serve and their families.  Though it is often taken for granted, freedom is not free, by any sense of the word.

Related… Someone sent this video to me yesterday - it is the funeral procession in Georgia for Staff Sergeant First Class John C. Beale - and though it is long (about 11 or 12 minutes long), I sat through all of it and cried nearly all the way through.  If only all soldiers received this kind of respect.   Video: http://blip.tv/play/AYGJ5h6YgmE

What an odd question.  We are a comparitively free people in this country, and we don’t have to "take advantage" of our freedom.  We do it every day by having access to this site as well as countless others.  We are not restricted with what we read or how we think.  We can go out and read 100 newspapers and think tanks from all over the world.  We can be totally selfish and think of only ourselve, or even though there is not compulsory draft or public service for our young people, we can encourage them to make sacrifices to this country anyway.  We can study or be school drop-outs.  We can be free thinkers or bound to a church or synagogue to tell us what to think.

I think it would have been a better discussion if you had posed the question like this:  How often do you show Gratitude of Living In A Free Country by giving to others, and do you honor your Responsibilty to this government by Voting and Participating in it the way our Founding Fathers intended?

Good point Diana. Many people either take their freedom for granted and squander it, or like you said, just think of it in selfish terms.

I suppose other than voicing my opinion both in public and to my elected officials and writing letters to the newspapers, and of course always voting, I suppose the last time I really expressed my freedom was when I attended a peace rally/war protest in Washington DC in January of ‘07.

Well I celebrate my freedom every day.  Admittedly we lie in a world where conflicting forces duke it out, and not everyone is for the wellbeing of mankind.  We lived in Ukraine and Belarus and visited Moscow and Siberia for 3 years in the early 90s, were there doing the coup, food shortages, youname it. Freedom for me is for everyone in the world to be a trust of the whole, and i just simply try to do service; i can never assess how am i doing, as that would be ego, but i believe this world will eventually come together as prophecied by most of the world’s traditions.  Meanwhile, I always speak up.  I need never shirk or express my voice when there is injustice, and little by little, hopefully cultures change.
