I’ve been to traffic school twice, so am now very careful.

I smoke. And occasionally read books when stuck in traffic - not when the car is moving - gets me some angry drivers when I’m late putting the book down and moving another meter forward :P

I sometimes talk on my cell phone, briefly, but other than that..eyes on the road and no tickets since I began to drive 41 years ago ( knock on wood)

My commute is long each day so I used to make appointments, call the hubby about dinner and at times soothe a disgruntled or tired child.  I hurt my arm from constantly twisting reach my son in the back seat.

Now, I just listen to the radio or an audio book and enjoy the 45 minutes of my time with miminal multi-tasking.

I listen to PBS on the radio or listen to books on CD for long trips. If I get a phone call I consider an emergency I pull over to take it or wait and call back when I can find a place to park. I’ve been hit three times by people on cell phones. One was indignant that I didn’t see her because she was on an important call. It was she who rearended my car.

The most distracting thing I do while drving is to change the radio station. I don’t eat or drink while on the road, don’t apply makeup and definitely don’t text or talk on my cellphone!

Yes, I multi-task while driving……listen to books on CD and use my bluetooth to talk on my BB (sometime email or text, but not often).

I think women are better at multi-tasking than men.   I’ve never understood how talking on a cell phone while driving is any more dangerous than eating or drinking hot coffee while you drive…..or simply talking to another passenger, people have a tendency to LOOK at the person they are talking to.

What seems to me to be really dangerous is people who drive with small dogs in their laps, with the dog looking out the window— while I appreciate the fact the dogs like to get out, that seems dangerous for everyone and for the poor dog.

I agree MK P . We gals are a lot better at multi tasking. OMG I see people driving with dogs in the back of the truck. I think its awfully dangerous to do that.

Driving with a dog in the back of the truck IS dangerous — I don’t think the owners think about what would happen should there be an accident…………..

If u text or email while driving, I hope to hell u stay outta my neighborhood!! U say u don’t do it "often"…just how "often" do u think it can be done w/o having an accident?? It only takes once!! If u feel u absolutly have to email/text someone, get off the road!! It’s ppl like u that cause accidents! No phone call,text/email is that important!!! EVER!!!!  Sheesh! FYI… I feel the same way of ppl who eat/drink while driving. I happened to glance in my rearview mirror 1 day while driving home from work, & some idiot (u?) was coming up behind me awfully fast & swearving all over the road, while talking on his cell! At first I thot he was drunk, then I saw the cell phone. He came within a inch of my bumper b4 he decided he’d better slow down. (I had to speed up)>

Messy ONE

Say it isn’t so! As a fellow female, I hate to say that the only times in the last decade that I have been in active danger while driving is because people think that being in the car is like being on a couch at home. Doubt it? A few examples of what I’ve seen, first on either the 635 (eight lanes in each direction) or 114 in Texas, both of which average 70 mph:

1. Reading a book on the steering wheel.

2. Painting their nails.

3. Using a curling iron.

4. Putting on mascara using the rearview mirror, holding their eyelid in one hand and the mascara wand in the other. No hands on the wheel.

5. Letting go of the wheel, turning around and yelling at the kids in the back seat.

6. Dropping their purse on the floor and letting go of the wheel while putting their head below the dash to retrieve it.

7. I’m not even going to count the cell phone yappers who talk with their hands, or slow down, or weave around through the lanes as if they’re BEGGING to get someone else killed…..

The following have happened in the last couple of months on city streets in Chicago:

1. Talking on the phone, which I must explain is illegal here and it’s a hefty fine. No problem, right? Do you think they realize that they’re going 20 mph in a 40 zone and weaving around like a bunch of drunks? I have seen two accidents caused by this in the last month alone. One of them was caused by a man veering away from the "cell phone drunk" and hitting a parked car. She drove away oblivious, even though the accident was her fault.

2. Brushing a dog.

3. Braiding the passenger’s hair.

4. Eating a hamburger and smoking a cigarette at the same time, steering with the knees. (To be fair, that was a man….in a 3/4 ton pickup that was pulling a trailer full of bricks.

5.  Wearing I-Pod earbuds. Yup. They’re going to hear that siren all right. A lot of people do this, including bus drivers. I cringe.

As you might guess, I’m pretty much a stickler when it comes to safe driving. I had to be, first when my mother (a rally driver and 1/4 mile racer) taught me to drive, then when I took up racing myself. If you want to avoid becoming a small greasy smear under the wheels of a semi-trailer, you DRIVE when you’re driving and nothing else.

This is the speech I got when I got my license:

"This is not a car. It is a three thousand pound weapon. You do not have the right to drive it. You have earned the privilege. Never assume that it cannot be taken away."

When you "multi-task" behind the wheel, you are risking lives, even if you’ve done it a thousand times before. I’m 4(never mind) and I’ve seen several truly nasty accidents on both city streets and on the highways. One moment’s inattention can mean a life. Think about that the next time you text behind the wheel or make that "desperately important" phone call to find out what kind of yogurt you need to pick up.

I appreciate  your points, Messy One….they are good ones.     I seldom text or email while driving — but, when I do — they are short and I am on a stretch of hwy btwn Omaha and KC or Omaha and Lincoln — when no one else is around.

As for cell phone usage — I just don’t believe it is any more dangerous than having kids in the car while you are driving — they can be a huge distraction……..I see parents yapping at their kids, turning around to the back seat……all of that.   And, don’t even get me started about people who drive with their dog in their lap…………..
