'ER' Actress Maura Tierney to Have Breast Tumor Removed; Molly Ringwald Has Twins

If you’re an NBC "ER" fan, you may know her better as Dr. Abby Lockhart. Maura Tierney has played Lockhart for ten years and won an Emmy nomination for her performance, but now she’s involved in a battle much bigger than that for a golden statue — the battle for her health.

Forty-four-year-old Tierney has revealed that she has found a tumor in her breast. "In an effort to guard my privacy, it seems that the wording of NBC’s press release has unfortunately caused some confusion and undue alarm about my health. I have discovered a tumor in my breast, which requires surgery," Tierney told Usmagazine.com in a statement. "I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed. My doctors have all assured me this is a very treatable condition," says Tierney.

The news comes after some weekend reports that the illness had pushed back the premiere of her new NBC fall drama, "Parenthood." Tierney’s sister told The Boston Herald that she’s expected to fully recover from the operation. "She’ll be fine," said Deirdre Puglini.

Tierney has appeared in films like "Liar Liar," playing Jim Carrey’s wife, and in last year’s Tina Fey comedy, "Baby Mama."

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About one in eight women run the risk of developing invasive breast cancer at some point in their lives. The American Cancer Society expects roughly 192,370 new cases of invasive breast cancer to be diagnosed among women in the United States this year alone.

In other celebrity news, 1980s teen star Molly Ringwald has given birth to twins, USMagazine confirms. Ringwald, who currently stars in "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," named the twin boy and girl Roman Stylianos and Adele Georgiana. Ringwald also has a five-year-old daughter with her husband, Panio Gianopoulos.

Congratulations to Ringwald and best of luck to Tierney as she undergoes her surgery!

More twins.  What’s up with that?  Something in the Hollywood water?   Maybe California could solve its money problems by bottling and marketing that water.

I can tell you having twins is a blessed event! The five that came before them were blessed events as well! But I have to admit, nothing was more of a surprize at the point at which they came. Things got a little complicated at the end, but the end result is something I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Maggie, I agree.  Twins are everywhere these days.  As for California, I wish it would be as simple as sprinkling some water, maybe Holy Water, on someone to do something.  One can only hope.  As for bottling the stuff, it will have to be in some new container as they are trying to ban selling the bottles because of the environment.  Reusable aluminum or metal bottles are being touted but I still dont see many of them around.

Hey, Wowowow, I know of 43 women having breast tumors examined, removed, biopsied right now … why feature 1?

C jay,

This case was "featured" because she was clarifying information that was leaked out. Sounds reasonable to me. Your other known 43 cases….what’s your point?

It isn’t "her" fault, it’s Wowowow’s disregard for the focusing on a star, someone visible in society, instead of the many that we healthcare advocates are helping 24/7 day in and night out.

That is my point!

There are more twins now because there is more invitro being done, which usually resuts in multiples.

Older moms have a higher chance of having multiples (with or without artificial help raising the chances as well).

Nothing can happen to celebrities that someone in the press isn’t there trying to dig up the dirt.  There are even employees at hospitals in the Hollywood area who get paid for revealing very personal information about "stars".  For the stars it is very agonizing to have everyone know their personal and painful business - i.e. Patrick Swayzee and Farrah Fawcett.  Maura Tierney didn’t want her physical condition released to the public, quite frankly, it isn’t any of the PUBLIC’S business.  But there is this incessant NEED TO KNOW anything and everything about the stars.  If someone probed into our personal medical information or court records and published it, we’d be beyond indignant but apparently it’s okay to have it happen to the human beings who happen to be actors and/or entertainers.  I don’t believe wowowow needed to jump on the bandstand in this case - there are enough gossip columnists out there already.
