Question of the Day | 04/30/2009 11:00 pm

In memory of 'Golden Girl' Bea Arthur, with what three women would you get a kick out of being roommates, à la 'Golden Girls'?

Marlo Thomas and Liz Smith name the three dames they would share a residence with …

Liz Smith, Ann Richards, Elaine Stritch and Sheila Nevins – The Next 'Golden Girls'?

I would have to pick three super dynamite eccentric hilariously interesting women in the persons of the late Ann Richards, governor of Texas … the stage’s great star Elaine Stritch … television’s funniest private person, HBO creative maven Sheila Nevins. Of course, wherever we would be living as roommates would probably blow up!

Marlo Thomas and Elaine May Were Felix and Oscar

Ages ago I was roommates with Elaine May, and though we were Felix and Oscar (I was Felix) I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Good times, lotsa laughs, day and night. My sister, Terre, would be our third roommate, mainly because it would be swell to share space with her again. We haven’t bunked together since we were kids (and performing little shows jumping out of our closet)! She is also hilarious. The three of us would be plenty.

Mae West is the only woman who comes to mind … and then it is because she would be only be home long enough to regale me with her famous advances in the male bedroom scene in her forays as a broad before her time.  Living with women?  Un-huh!!  A group of women in my house full time and I do believe I would be getting therapy for going with the idea even.  "She’s losing her marbles" they would say.  For as Mae West says:  it truly isn’t the years in your life, but the life in your men.

Men, absolutely.  Hand picked at the height of the season - yum!

Well Liz,

There are so many ways to go with this question. In the fantasy of choosing well known "celebrity" women (or men for those who don’t mind the toilet seat up), I would choose "golden girls" that could laugh at themselves and at life. Therefore, Ellen Degeneres would be right up there in the top running. From there, I think Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner would be lots of fun. In the honor of the "Golden Girls", these women have the ability to laugh amidst the world of troubles. And get their hands dirty when they believe in a cause. All of that would make great kitchen talks and times. Oh, and I would be Sophia…not in age but demeanor.

This is easy.  I have seven sisters, and two could be Dorothy, one IS Blanche, and one IS Rose.  As for Sophia, now that my mother is older, she speaks her mind rather… blatantly, similar to Sophia’s character.

It would be difficult for me to identify living celebrities who I’d actually enjoy being a roommate with.  And, I certainly would not want to inadvertently insult anyone in this forum.  Instead, I’d choose Bette Davis for Dorothy, Bette Davis for Rose, Bette Davis for Blanche, and Bette Davis for Sophia.  After all, is there any other actress who could play all roles EXCEPT, Bette Davis.  Oh wait!!!  I’d choose Marylin Monroe for Rose rather than Bette Davis.

Maizie…lol. OK, we can have ghosts. PERFECT. I’ll choose Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Saint Joan of Arc. We’ll just stay ourselves….as don’t want to be other characters. Saint Joan…stay away from the fire, dear.

Live with three other women!?!? I live with one woman, my mother, and I can hardly live in peace with her. CA

GREAT ANSWER!!  Just when I was tempted to ‘spill’ my real opinion - especially naming that lady from Alaska in the role as Rose Nylund.  Opps!  Did I say that?  Gosh darn, you betcha!!

When I was young, I felt like I was being raised by Archie and Edith, that was crazy enough, this scenario would be insane! lol Three other women, I think I will stick with my cats and dogs.

I grew up with 4 brothers and went nuts living in a female dorm my first year in college.  I couldn’t live with women - I can’t put up with the catty moody tempermental ways of females.  I feel very foreign whenever I have to relate to girls who fall into that mold.  They are just too much effort and work to try and figure out and "handle" properly.

the only roommates i could ever get along with are my children and grandchild. that’s enough for me. they know they have to take care of me til i die, just as i took care of my parents and their children will take care of them. so that is enough. i don’t get along with anybody else enough to live with them. they either want to get up early or be loud when i’m sleeping. i got my family trained and they got me trained that is good enough for me!

Lol, Nancy.  I, too, am not willing to live with others.  My parents have both expressed their wishes to not live with any of their 3 children, including me, the oldest.  As I have no children, it will be the nursing home for me as well.  Just as well.  I’m a cranky one.

my kids know better than put me in a nursing home. one time my son (now 30) in his teens asked me if i would be in the same room of the nursing home with my bff of 29yrs. at first i said "hell, no! we love each other but couldn’t live together!" then i turned around and said "nursing home? i know you didn’t say nursing home!" i told him and his sister that i diapers, fed them babyfood and wiped their drool, so when i regress to that stage they get to do the same for me!

i now suffer from many ailments and conditions. they take care of me now. my son is disabled mentally i take care of him. my daughter has problems i take care of her. it works just fine all around. btw, here is always assisted living instead of nursing homes. they also know if i get that bad to PULL THE PLUG!!!

I tried to talk my best friend into promising to pick me up for a day pass, drive into her garage, leave the motor running, go into the house and "forget" about me, claiming dimensia.  She won’t do it.  I was kidding, of course, but my biggest fear is losing my dignity.
