Happy Birthday, Lily!

My dearest Lily … How well I remember meeting you at Patti Goldstein’s in Manhattan (we were an incestuous little group that included the genius Jane Wagner, and so me and my unknown crowd came into your amazing orbit). We sat before a fireplace gossiping, as I recall.

I had loved you from afar and, after that, I had the good luck to love you occasionally up close. You have been an amazing friend and you are always there like the Statue of Liberty for your friends.

Since we began the wowOwow group, I feel we are closer than ever. I say, frequently boring people to death, that yours and Jane’s great stage event, “The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe,” should have won a Pulitzer, a Tony and God knows what else. When I saw you on TV accepting the mighty Mark Twain award in Washington, I cried because it seemed, at last, there was some justice in show business.

I was struck again recently at your incredible talent and how unique you are as a performer when I saw again the video clip of you performing as the smarmy male lounge singer, crooning to Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson. Lily, you were heaven-sent to us poor mortals. Love and Happy Birthday from LIZ SMITH, your fan.

Dear Lily, do NOT have a birthday. Birthdays are bad for your health — mind-body connection stuff, neurologists have convinced me. Celebrate how fabulous you are, blessed, and what fun you have with all of us instead. I will drink to that tonight!!!!!!!! Mary

Lily—
You dared to be a funny brunette
And
You can morph into anyone and anything
I am struck with admiration and awe whenever I meet you
And when you’re not around I can
Worship all the wonderful women you are
Happy Birthday
And many happy returns to all of them!!

Jane’s Birthday Verse for Lily

I hate birthdays
I know you do, too
yet what else can we do
We’ll have to say “Happy Birthday”
’till we come up with something new
Yes, we hate clichés
like Happy Birthdays
I’m cringing now at the sound
yet somehow I feel something profound
I think of you, Lily, being born
on a September morn
like today
and it takes my breath away
It even makes me want to say
of all things… “Lily, Happy Birthday”

70 years ago the world became a brighter happier, and more loving place. The stars shone brighter and the sky was filled with hope. Lily, you still bring those cherished values to our lives.  Your grace, your intelligence, your deep caring about the important things in society, but most of all your laugh, your smile and dancing eyes are what I feel most blessed by your life. Thank you from all our family for those precious times we have shared over the year. Let’s have many, many more. You are loved! Oh, Happy Birthday. Aren’t you glad you can’t hear me!!

Dear Lily:  Do you think they just stamped and flattened out Joan’s poem at the office — cuz she had really written it so long -and nice — so I could scrunch it and push it until it fit under your door while you were sleeping .  . and  then you could get it first thing in the morning?  I hope so.  Signed: Edith Ann!!
