It’s your BIG day, Lily
Happy Birthday to You!!!!!
I feel like it is my 5th birthday just knowing it is your birthday. It’s like I know you because of all the laughter and tears (Edith Ann made me laugh to tears, oh oh oh, don’t forget Ernestine) you gave me. Thanks for being you and loving the rest of us the way you do by making us laugh. Your great common sense always shines through and the fact that you love elephants and want to save them just ties the ribbon on the box.
I wish I could give you a good reason for being born in these times. God knows, you deserve better.
I see you hunkered over a battered table with Da Vinci breathing down your neck, as you gleefully pour out a pile of fresh coins delivered to your door by the ever-grateful Medicis. Or floating over Paris in a balloon gondola, dictating words of other-worldly wisdom as Madame Blavatsky laughs and scribbles furiously in her notebook. Or lounging, diaphanous, on a pale-blue triclinium, plotting with Cleopatra as grape-feeders clamor to press their precious morsels to your lips.
So, why now? You may wonder, even as as you sit stranded in filthy, hot traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard, with NPR bleating on about The Fall of Civilization. Then, of course, an old pink Pontiac overheats in front of you. Now, there’s nothing to do but wait. Your eye drifts down to a bumper sticker on the rear fender that says: “Delusions of grandeur make me feel a lot better about myself.”
Happy Birthday Lily - and congratulations on making these times your own. With you around, I’d rather be living in the here and now.
Dear Lily,
I hope your birthday was as wonderful as you are… One of my fondest Lily memories has to do with one of your appearances on the old Hollywood Squares. There was an older woman trying for the ‘win’, and she was nervous and a bit confused. You had been selected to answer a question on her behalf, and you very obviously made it quite plain what the correct answer was, trying to help her out, even saying that it shouldn’t be too hard. Kindness shone in your eyes, and I can remember thinking, what a sweet thing to do.
I love you, I love your character and integrity… oh and your sense of humour too!! :P
Thank you for *being*, Lily. xo
Sweet September
Happy birthday and the sweetest September,
A celebration we shall surely remember.
We know you waited another year,
To bring all of us, together and near.

Listen, Lily. I know this is a tad late, and I shouldn’t be butt in in on your birthday page, but I really, REALLY want you to introduce me to Jane. Please? Pretty please? Please, Pretty?
If you’ll remember back about 20 years, I requested this favor of you in a letter that I hand-delivered to the theatre where you were performing The Search for Intelligent Signs of Life in the Universe. First, I’d seen you at the restaurant. You walked in wearing a coat out of the late 1930s, with shoulders wide enough to knock over a passing wide-receiver. I recognized you immediately, but could say nothing. I was being interviewed for a job. The next morning, I saw your limo drive up onto a corner of the Boston Common — this tiny dog came bounding out, then you did. That scene alone inspired me to write to you.
I’m in Texas now. Been here since June 28th, 2004, at 8:30 p.m. There are loads of stories to tell. But now, now that Mizz Richards and Mizz Ivins have left us, life is all that much harder here. Alas, this lass must hitch up some oxen to the Prairie Schooner and head for the Free North, to a Blue State where they have laws on the books that protect the rights of workers and queers and flutter-byes.
Wishing you many more revolutions ‘round the Sun, Mizz Tomlin.
Happy, Joyous, and Free! It beats the alternative.
Best to Mizz Wagner.

p.s. And thanks for showing up at the services for Ted Kennedy. I couldn’t be there, so it gladdened my heart when I saw the photo of you in attendance.
