Happy Birthday to wOw

It’s our one-year anniversary!

March 8 is a big deal around these offices. First off, it’s International Women’s Day. And second, it’s when we mark our one-year birthday online.

We just finished our biggest month ever, with one million reader visits in February alone. From zero to a million in 12 months?

We couldn’t have done it without you.

A year ago, we were thrilled to see ourselves on our computer screens, but the most exciting part was to hear from a community we never met before. Please continue to send us your comments, your ideas, your submissions and your enthusiasm. We are hoping to make this coming year one in which we can join together to help each other through these tough economic times — with the independent, positive, wOw spirit we all share. Stay tuned.

I remember how different it was when I first came, only a couple of months past the beginning.  My hope is continued success but with change to what it was in the beginning.

Hey WOW, I just looked back and I see that my first entry was toward the end of FEBRUARY, 2008!!!  Was this the "try-out" stage before" in the beginning on March 8???  Could that early group of us be considered "Founding Members" then???

when i came to wow in april after charley rose discussed it with some founders, i thought it was great. now i think it is an insult to the accomplishments of many women who actually do celebrate international women’s day to call today the anniversary of wow. there are so many real feminists who have made consequential changes that it hurts me to realize this bowdlerized wow is what its own founders think is a worthwhile website. editorial discretion alone should get the "nobama" out of liz peek’s headline. now is the time for all of us to pull together to get us out of the financial and legal swamp that dubya bush dragged us into.

YES!  I so agree with you.  I used to really enjoy being here, now, it is almost a struggle to come back.

When the editors, writers, and so on, get embroiled in their own opinions and are dissin’ President Obama it becomes very offensive!  As a ‘poster’ and not an editor, it seems appropriate for me to make those kinds of comments - isn’t this the reason this site was founded?  For women to have a voice in the world?  I suppose we must accept that since the Bush-whacker was being so criticized there will be those to criticize a real President, as well.

Your sentiment (and others) about the use of ’Nobama’ was relayed to the Editorial team.

Happy International Women’s Day!  I’ve been here from Day One, although I don’t post that often.  And it has changed — I’m not so sure for the better.

I just looked at my very first comment.  The question was "What Wakes You Up at Four in the Morning?" on 03/13/2008 at 2:43 pm.  At that point in time I was lucky to get to sleep before 4AM.  Little did I know I’d get hooked here and make so many friends.

Congratulations wOwOwOw!

I joined 3/27/08 , can it be that long ago?

Surely not.

Daughter told me it was a site for me to check out and I have been checking every morning BEFORE my coffee ever since.

My joy is learning from the bright minds who answer here. So many of them have truly helped me through a very tumulteous year.

Most of all  I have to thank " haa haa" . This person listed the site for more information on Vets pensions.  I had talked to social workers at the VA till I was blue in the face, no help.

This " haa haa" I owe so very much to. On Jan 1 2009 we received the first pension (my husband was entitled for 16 years) check, I could leave my job and finally be home.

It mushroomed to being able to send him FIVE days a week to day care. This gave me 6 hours a day of freedom. Freedom that I had lost for the last 11 years.

The VA is paying for the day care too.
An informed WOWer who is anonymous to me has changed my life.

SO WOW ladies thank you for starting this.

Finally did more research on the "haa haa" writer and there is only one entry

under that name. Must have been an angel.

That story must be the very best thing I’ve read on wOw, Jeannot. I’m so glad you got the help you and your husband needed. Angels on wOw. Whodah thought!

Thank you Rocky, real stories like mine we need to hear these days.

I repaid in kind, I know of at least 8 people who now have applied for their pension.

We are not begging. Lincoln started it all

"……to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan…."

Problem is that we have to find it on our own.

I am not a drama queen but my world is absolutely turned around for the better.

Anyone in here who wants info on Veterans go to this site :

Jeannot

Thanks for the link.  I hope my son will never need it, but one of his buddies may need it now.  I am going to find out if it covers current veterans.  Thanks so much.

Frannie, covers any vet who was in service during a war, did not have to be actually fighting.

He/she could have been here in the USA.

Depending on your needs and income, of course.

After we got in, we had a worker come to the house and was actually very pleasant and happy to give the money. They do ask what you are going to spend it on etc…etc….My understanding is that the medical expenses we will have this year will be re-embursed as well.

The program I think is  very needed but not advertised. Even the social worker at our VA never mentioned it to me.

Payment will go back to the day you file.  Took me 9 months before I had the check in hand.

Also: the Va does not accept the Power of ATtorney I have, they have to have their own.

Please do pass the word around, not just for WW2 vets, heavens we know how many more wars  came after that.

Jeannot, thank you, I will.  This is very important.  I know the army bureaucracy grinds slowly, but sometimes it gets where it is supposed to go.  I remember many WW2 Vets that used to say they were taken care of in times of need.  This is great, thanks again.

God Bless you and your husband, Jeannot.  This IS the best post, by far, to date, that I’ve read on WOW.
