HBO Revives 'Grey Gardens' Starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore (Photos)

Photo Essay

In anticipation of the HBO revival of “Grey Gardens,” which premieres on HBO on April 18, wowOwow has special photographs of the cast and crew.

The adaptation, told over the span of four decades, focuses on the glamorous and well-heeled lives of Jackie O’s eclectic relatives —“Big Edie Beale” (Jessica Lange) and her daughter “Little Edie” (Drew Barrymore) — long before the making of the Maysleys’ documentary. As you remember from the 1970s film, which showed a mother and daughter who lived together amid the decay and disorder of their ramshackle East Hampton mansion, this film will shed light on their riches-to-rags story. Click through this slideshow for more on the upcoming film.

Visit wowOwow.com soon for our exclusive interview with the executive producer, Rachael Horovitz.

That movie poster and pix #5 looks just like the Beales. What a fantastic project. I read about the 5 hrs of makeup each day and all the accent/voice coaching. Just from the scenes looks like it follows the play and earlier film. Looking forward to the interview and the HBO movie. Have always been fascinated with them. On one hand scarily squandered lives, on the other authentic, unique and dramatic. Certainly they were not dull-witted like so many of their relatives. The betraying John H. Davis etc.

Suzanne: I take it you must have seen the actual documentary, "Grey Gardens"? Fascinating stuff––so eccentric! Will be looking forward to seeing this HBO performance. As you know, the broadway production was pretty successful.

I recently saw the original documentary.  Depressing, wasted lives—how is this interesting except as an object lesson?  I found myself wondering how they died and what happened to the house.  The raccoons were actually breaking down the interior walls.  The house must have been demolished.

No, the house was purchased and renovated by sally Quinn. There was a short article about that recently in WWD. I think I found the link to the story at huffington post

Should be interesting, although a review I heard on NPR was not glowing, panned Drew Barrymore. But I’ll definitely watch and make my own decision.

Don’t we love to watch eccentrics ? "There but for the grace of God ……."

As I wrote yesterday, I couldn’t finish the original documentary: I felt trapped in their sickness and had to take a walk to clear my head and remind myself I’m sane… ew…….

You can watch the original documentary on youtube in segments. Just type Grey Gardens in the search. I watched the whole thing the other day after not having seen it since the nineties. It is fascinating, sad, and really funny with some marvelous one liners from the Edies.
