Joan Ganz Cooney's Real and Dream Theme Songs

I’ve half-kiddingly said that my epitaph ought to be "I Did It Their Way." What I’ve meant is that my generation of women was brought up to worry about what others might think of anything they did. If I had it to do again I’d try to live so that my theme song would be "Born Free."

Kathleen I really like your choice of song, it fits me as well, but I think I’d have to go with "Last Song" by Edward Bear

Susan Crawford

"Try to Remember" from the long-running classic play The Fantasticks. The song looks both backward and forward, urging listeners to "Try to remember / When deep in December / The fires of September / That made us mellow" - and that’s what I try to do. (And it brings back wonderful memories of the late, great Jerry Ohrbach, who sang it so beautifully.

Barring that, I also find myself hearing the refrain from "Sweet Sue" as sung by Chet Baker in some of my more introspective moments. The way this tormented genius sang it, "Sweet Sue" was more of a lament than a celebration, but once in a while, it sums up life’s little moments of difficulty just perfectly!

Susan Crawford - Never to be forgotten, wonderful Jerry Ohrbach. What a great performer and person. I would walk miles through deep snow to see him again as I first saw him in his Broadway debut musical . I can’t for the life of me remember the title but I think it was a circus type setting and I can’t even remember the music, which is very unusual for me.

I agree with your choice, “"Try to Remember”. He sang it beautifully. (But he sang everything beautifully, didn’t he? - always a truly, “Star” performer). I can understand why it gets you right here! LR.

i don’t have a theme song, so much as an anthem. stone ponies wth lynda ronstadt’s ‘beat of a different drum’.  i’m almost 60, still single, and can say it’s been a helluva ride.

Come Some rainy Day by Winona Judd

"We move on and put our dreams away

hoping that we’ll find them come some rainy day.

How could I know that everything would change Except the way I miss you

Come some rainy day

Lost my oldest sister to breast cancer and I can only cry when I hear these words. After 12 years, I still miss her.

"Optimistic" by Sounds of Blackness.  It was the song that kept me from falling.

"Don’t give up and don’t give in
Although it seems you never win
You will always pass the test
As long as you keep your head to the sky
You can win.  As long as you keep your head to the sky

Be optimistic."

Carlos Santana’s ‘Winning’ - ‘I’m winning and I don’t intend on losing again’. This song became my personal anthem the first time I heard it back in the early 80’s.

I am with you, Johnette. That is my survival song. I sang it every time I was in the hospital during my cancer period. I guess it worked. I am still here and surviving. :)

That’s wonderful, Beth, and I pray you keep right on singing "I Will Survive" and by all means, surviving and thriving! You are as strong as the faith we have and the songs we sing in our hearts!

"What’s Going On"

Father, father, everybody thinks we’re wrong
But who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today

What’s going on
